France student renewals require an early ANEF application and the correct interim certificate

This current explainer distinguishes the four-to-two-month renewal window, academic evidence and the different documents issued while a student residence application is processed.

Renewal is a separate task from arrival validation

International students already studying in France should plan the end of their current immigration permission as carefully as their next enrolment. This current explainer concerns residence renewal, rather than an announcement of a new October rule. The national Service Public student guidance, verified on 1 August 2026, states that the application must be made no earlier than four months and no later than two months before the existing visa, validated long-stay visa or residence document expires.

The online student renewal procedure concerns people pursuing higher education who do not already hold a personal or family residence permission covering their situation. It should not be assumed to govern every foreign national studying in France. An illustrative planning example is a document expiring at the end of February: the relevant renewal window begins four months before that expiry and closes two months before it. Waiting until the document's final week misses the stated filing window even if classes have already begun.

Prepare readable evidence of identity, address and studies

The Interior Ministry's student document checklist explains the categories of digital evidence to assemble. They include the existing residence document, passport information, recent address evidence and a photograph or e-photo reference. Depending on accommodation, address evidence can involve a lease, utility bill, hotel confirmation or documents from a person hosting the student. Files must be readable; a document that exists on a phone but cannot be read by the caseworker does not resolve an evidence request.

The same checklist asks for enrolment or pre-enrolment, the previous year's transcripts, the latest diploma and a certificate of success where applicable. Students on a European mobility programme need the institution's evidence of that programme. Financial evidence depends on the source of support, such as a scholarship certificate, salary documents, bank evidence or third-party support. Loiret prefecture confirms that the threshold rose to EUR 877.50 monthly on 1 August 2026. The older checklist still prints EUR 615, so use the current requirement rather than its outdated amount.

Academic progress and local follow-up still matter

Essonne prefecture's student information explains that the reality and seriousness of studies matter to renewal. Attendance, progress and explanations for an unsuccessful year or a change of course can therefore be relevant; an enrolment document is not the whole assessment. Students whose academic path has changed should organise the evidence that explains that path instead of assuming another tuition payment settles their residence position. The prefecture's information also distinguishes special situations, including people who arrived for an entrance examination or who become adults while in France.

Loiret prefecture's student instructions direct applicants to monitor their ANEF personal account for progress and requests for additional evidence. The page also describes notification when a document is ready and the importance of a usable telephone number. These local resources help with follow-up; they do not replace the nationally stated filing window. Applicants should use the instructions of their own prefecture for collection arrangements rather than travel to an office solely because another department describes that procedure.

A submission receipt is not an extension of residence

Service Public's explanation of residence application attestations distinguishes the immediate online filing receipt from documents that prove lawful residence. The attestation de depot confirms submission but is not a provisional residence document and does not itself authorise work. Saving it is useful evidence that an application was lodged, but presenting it as though it automatically extends every right attached to an expired card would be incorrect.

For a complete application filed within the required period, the attestation de prolongation d'instruction is the relevant provisional residence document while examination continues. It is valid for a maximum of three months and can be renewed while a decision is outstanding. A separate attestation de decision favorable records a positive decision. Students should inspect the actual heading and validity of the document in their account; the fact that several certificates are downloaded through the same portal does not give them identical legal effects.

Check travel and work effects against the actual certificate

The Interior Ministry's guide to provisional ANEF documents explains that a renewal prolongation certificate must be accompanied by the previous residence document, even when that document has expired. It preserves rights arising from that previous permission, including work where it was allowed, during the certificate's validity. The ministry says this renewal certificate permits crossing Schengen borders. These effects should not be transferred indiscriminately to a first-application certificate, which has different restrictions.

Before an employer check or proposed journey, use the ministry resource to identify whether the document concerns a first application, renewal or favourable decision, and which accompanying papers it requires. The filing confirmation alone does not support Schengen border crossing. The practical next steps are to calculate the renewal window, assemble the required evidence, submit through ANEF and monitor for the appropriate certificate or further request. An online filing does not promise immediate approval, a particular card duration or unrestricted travel while every type of application is pending.
