How to check your visa application status

Checking a visa application starts with identifying who received it. A government immigration account, an embassy case tracker and an application-centre receipt can all relate to the same journey, but they may show different information. This directory helps you choose the appropriate official route for your destination. Start with the country you intend to visit, then match the instructions to your visa category and the place where you submitted your documents. Keep the original confirmation email nearby: the correct reference and account are usually easier to identify there than in a bank payment description.

Choose the destination and the application route

Select the country that is considering your application, rather than the country that issued your passport. If you applied for a Spanish visa while living in another country, begin with Spain and then check the Spanish consulate or application centre responsible for your place of residence. A centre’s tracking service may be specific to that submission location. The country pages identify the scope of each linked service so you can distinguish an online visa application from a residence permit, travel authorisation or embassy submission.

Keep related permissions separate. A transit visa for a connecting airport is a different case from permission to enter your final destination. An overseas territory can also have its own entry arrangements. If your itinerary involves several permissions, follow each application independently and use its own reference. The inclusion of a destination in this directory does not mean every traveller needs a visa, or that every application can be tracked online.

Prepare the information from your receipt

Before opening an official tracker, find the application acknowledgement, submission receipt and any account-registration message. Depending on the service, you may need an application number, case identifier, passport number, date of birth, surname or registered email address. Some services require you to sign in; others provide a reference-based enquiry form. Use the exact information requested on the official screen. Do not substitute a payment reference, appointment booking number or courier number unless that service expressly asks for it.

If an adviser, employer, sponsor or family member submitted the application, ask them which service was used and request the relevant acknowledgement. Do not assume an application will appear in a newly created personal account. The authority may have a specific process for linking or sharing a case. Follow that process and use account recovery if you have lost access to your original login.

Understand what each status service can tell you

An application-progress service concerns the request being processed. An issued-visa verification service concerns a permission that already exists. Passport delivery tracking concerns movement or collection of a document. These are useful checks, but one does not replace another. A message that a passport has been dispatched should be read alongside the authority’s decision, rather than treated as confirmation that a visa was granted.

The differences are visible in official guidance. Australian Home Affairs directs online applicants to ImmiAccount for application updates. France-Visas explains tracking according to the submission provider. IRCC asks applicants to select their application type to find the appropriate status route. Use the destination guide to reach the service that fits your case.

Read requests as carefully as the headline status

After signing in, open the application details and read any messages, letters or outstanding tasks. A short status label may not explain what action is required. If the authority asks for further evidence, follow the instructions in that request, including the submission channel and deadline. Keep a copy of what you send and any acknowledgement. A document saved in a draft upload area may still require a separate submission action; check the service’s own instructions before assuming the response is complete.

What to do when no result appears

First check that you selected the correct service and application category. Compare the reference with the original acknowledgement, including letters, punctuation and any required year or location selection. Review the date format and name fields shown on the page. If the system still cannot find the case, use the authority’s published help channel or the office named on your receipt. A missing record, a technical error or an unchanged status does not establish whether the application has been approved or refused.

If the official service is temporarily unavailable, keep the reference and return later or follow its technical-support instructions. Avoid submitting another application solely because a tracker is unavailable. If an agent lodged the case, ask the agent to check their account and provide the relevant official correspondence.

When and how to make an enquiry

Check the responsible authority’s current processing guidance and enquiry rules before contacting it. Processing-time information describes a service or category; it is not a guaranteed decision date for an individual. Follow any instruction about when an enquiry can be made. Prepare a concise message with the application category, submission office, submission date and reference, then explain the issue and the action you need clarified. Supply sensitive documents only through the official channel when requested.

Check the decision and your next action

When a decision is available, read the actual decision notice and the instructions for collecting a passport, obtaining an electronic permission or supplying anything further. For an issued visa, check the personal details, validity dates and conditions against your intended journey. If something appears incorrect, ask the issuing authority how to correct it before relying on the document. If the application was refused, use the notice to identify any review or appeal route and its deadline; a tracking page alone may not explain those rights.

Use official services and protect your details

VisaWand provides directions and links; this tool does not retrieve your private immigration record. You do not need to enter passport details, passwords or application numbers here. Enter them only in the appropriate official service or the provider identified by the responsible authority. The country pages link their references so you can check the scope yourself. Where a specific online route remains unverified, we identify that limitation and provide available official reference guidance instead of presenting an unrelated checker.
