UK partner visa finances require the correct threshold and the correct evidence

This current explainer separates the usual GBP 29,000 income requirement, transitional cases and benefit exceptions from the documents needed to demonstrate eligible funds.

Establish the relevant financial rule before adding up household income

This current explainer examines the financial requirement for a United Kingdom partner or spouse family visa. It does not announce a new October income increase. The government's Financial requirements if applying as a partner or spouse page gives the usual threshold as GBP 29,000 a year. Different arrangements can apply where the partner receives specified disability or carer benefits, or where an applicant qualifies for transitional treatment linked to a successful application made before 11 April 2024.

For an extension with the same partner under the published transitional arrangements, the page identifies a GBP 18,600 starting requirement and additional amounts for qualifying children, subject to the stated overall cap. The children's nationality and status can affect whether extra income must be shown. Applicants should therefore establish their immigration history and dependants' circumstances before choosing a threshold. A figure used by a friend making a new overseas application may not be the correct figure for an existing partner's extension.

Not every household earning can be counted in the same way

The House of Commons Library's briefing explains that the partner family-visa requirement is distinct from the rules for migrants bringing a partner as a dependant. It also highlights an important restriction on employment earnings: the visa applicant's employment income can generally be counted only where the applicant is already working legally in the UK and is switching or extending. An overseas applicant should not simply add a foreign salary to the sponsor's earnings and assume the ordinary employment category is met.

The official Information and evidence you must provide resource identifies possible financial sources, including qualifying employment, self-employment, pensions, rental or dividend income and cash savings above GBP 16,000. Each source has conditions; the reference to that savings amount is not a statement that GBP 16,000 alone replaces the income requirement. The guidance directs applicants to the detailed financial rules when combining sources, using non-employment income or dealing with recent maternity or paternity leave. Choose the relevant evidence category before calculating the amount available.

Build a consistent employment and bank-document record

The evidence resource identifies bank statements, payslips covering the relevant period and an employer letter as typical employment evidence. The letter should confirm employment, job title, length and type of contract, gross earnings, how long the current salary has been paid and the authenticity of payslips. An illustrative sponsor should check whether the bank records show the salary payments represented by the payslips, rather than rely only on a contract stating what the job is expected to pay.

Appendix FM-SE supplies the specified-evidence rules behind that checklist. For salaried employment with the current employer for at least six months, it normally requires six months of payslips and corresponding personal bank statements, alongside the employer letter, subject to the category's detailed provisions. Cases with shorter employment or self-employment require their own assessment. Where the rules specify evidence ending at the application date, the latest relevant evidence must generally be dated within the preceding 28 days. Assemble records with the intended submission date in mind.

An exception to the threshold still requires a supported application

Specified disability or carer benefits can remove the usual minimum-income test, but the government's financial guidance still requires adequate support and accommodation without reliance on additional public funds. Applicants should use the detailed family caseworker guidance to identify the appropriate maintenance calculation and documents. Receiving a benefit not included in the relevant provisions should not be assumed to create an exemption. Equally, meeting the numerical income threshold does not replace the separate relationship, English-language and other applicable family-visa requirements.

Appendix FM-SE explains that evidence must establish permitted sources, permitted combinations and the applicable periods. It allows defined evidential flexibility, including requests for missing or corrected material in some circumstances, but does not promise that every incomplete file will receive a request before refusal. The practical next step is to identify the route and threshold, match each financial source to its evidence rules and resolve gaps before submission. This report makes no finding about a particular household's eligibility and announces no change to application fees or processing times.
