Moving & Living - Bahamas - Complete Guide
Move to The Bahamas step by step: choose an island, arrange residence and employment permission, prepare your household and set up banking, housing, healthcare and utilities.

A move to The Bahamas starts with the island: a Nassau work or school journey, a Freeport household, or a smaller settlement where supplies and appointments need a different transport plan. Choose the place around your daily needs, then connect housing and services to the permission that fits your purpose.
This fourteen-step guide takes you from preparation to a functioning local routine. It explains employer and residence paperwork, optional education and retirement planning, pet timing, National Insurance, banking, healthcare and island-specific electricity arrangements.

Follow your moving journey
Start at step 1, or jump to the task you are working on.
01Choose the island first, then test the neighbourhood
Choose the island serving your work, school or other reason for moving before comparing homes. Nassau is on New Providence; Paradise Island is connected to it by bridge. The official Nassau and Paradise Island information identifies these as distinct places, so clarify which side of the crossing a proposed address occupies.
| Base | Places to investigate | What to establish |
|---|---|---|
| New Providence | Homes near the actual Nassau work or school address; compare Cable Beach, downtown or another appropriate area | The complete commute, building services and total rent. |
| Grand Bahama | Freeport or the neighbourhood connected to the institution bringing you there | Daily transport, utility provider and healthcare arrangements. |
| A Family Island | The settlement near your employment or household base | Local supplies, medical contacts and necessary inter-island journeys. |
- Locate each household member's regular destination.
- Compare the proposed home with groceries, healthcare and school access.
- Request recent electricity and water bills and ask about internet at the exact property.
- Price transport and necessary inter-island travel separately.
- Inspect the accommodation and test the route before signing a longer lease.
The Tourism Ministry's island-hopping information explains air and ferry connections, including journeys that require Nassau as a connection point. Use it to locate operators, then confirm the actual schedule directly. A route useful for a holiday does not necessarily make an everyday school or work journey practical.
Ask how the household will function when a normal service is interrupted: water storage, backup power, building maintenance and access to necessary medication. Obtain the owner's actual arrangements rather than assuming that all properties on the same island offer equivalent facilities. Keep temporary accommodation flexible until immigration timing and the permanent home fit together.

02Choose residence permission that matches the reason for your move
Separate a visit from permission to live or work in The Bahamas. The Immigration Department’s Permit to Reside instructions describe this permission for non-Bahamians living for a purpose other than employment. An annual residence document is not a substitute for the permission needed to take paid work.
- Identify whether the move is for employment, study, family or another eligible residence category.
- Prepare the application matching that purpose and the supporting evidence for each applicant.
- Establish the submission and processing location before booking the household’s move.
- Arrange separate applications for accompanying people where required.
- Keep the decision and its conditions, not only the application receipt, with travel records.
The department says first-time status applicants should not be in the country while the application is processed. Its residence checklist requires a request letter, notarised Form I, medical and police certificates, photographs and identity evidence, plus the applicable financial, sponsor and civil records. Time the certificates around submission rather than obtaining them too early.
The page reviewed in October 2026 lists a non-refundable processing fee of BSD 200 and a BSD 10 postage stamp for the form. These are listed application charges, not a quotation for the entire permission. Accompanying dependants need their own Permit to Reside applications. Confirm each person’s category, especially where a spouse intends to work.
Build the accommodation and education plan around the permission actually being sought. A property purchase, an overseas salary or a school application does not by itself establish that the immigration process is complete. Obtain the category-specific instructions and organise the move around the department’s decision.
03Coordinate the employer's application before starting paid work
Use the Immigration Department's new work-permit procedure for a proposed job. It separates employment exceeding ninety days from the short-term permit required for work up to ninety days. Agree the intended role, employer and duration before selecting the application.
- Obtain a written offer describing duties, salary, workplace and contract period.
- Agree who prepares the employer's labour and business documents.
- Collect your identity records, references and the medical and police evidence required by the category.
- Confirm whether the profession requires approval from its Bahamian council or regulator.
- Track the application and align the start date with the permission actually issued.
The checklist includes a Labour Certificate with Notification of Vacancy and nationally circulated newspaper advertisements for three consecutive days, subject to the published fee-scale and role exceptions. It also requests employer business and National Insurance evidence. Certain professions need their council's authorisation; do not assume an overseas professional qualification completes local registration.
The page reviewed in October 2026 lists BSD 200 as the non-refundable processing charge and a BSD 10 stamp for the notarised form. Permit fees depend on the applicable occupation and scale, so obtain the category's payment instruction separately. Dependants require their own residence applications.
Discuss accommodation, health cover and transport with the employer before comparing the salary to household costs. Record whether each benefit is paid directly, reimbursed or left to you. For an intended business or overseas remote-work arrangement, establish the applicable business and immigration permissions before treating the income as a lawful settlement plan; an ordinary non-working residence document does not resolve every activity.
04Budget for the island household and identify the taxes that apply
Prepare the budget in Bahamian dollars, BSD, and identify the currency on every quotation. Keep arrival spending separate from ordinary household costs. Freight, the first accommodation payment and application charges can absorb funds before a salary or overseas transfer reaches the local account.
| Initial costs | Recurring costs | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Travel, shipping and temporary accommodation | Rent, electricity, water and internet | Carrier quotes, written lease and recent property bills. |
| Deposit, furniture and document preparation | Food, local transport and inter-island travel | Agreed rental terms and provider quotations. |
| Permission applications and medical records | Insurance, education and ongoing treatment | Official payment instructions and household-specific contracts. |
The Department of Inland Revenue's VAT explanation identifies a standard rate of 10%, alongside zero-rated and exempt treatment. Confirm whether the price you receive includes the applicable VAT. For a hypothetical taxable service priced at BSD 100 before standard-rate VAT, the total would be BSD 110; this is a calculation, not a quoted service price.
The department's 2024 tax-administration guidance states that The Bahamas has no domestic personal income-tax regime. That does not answer your former country's obligations, the treatment of an overseas business or every Bahamian business and property charge. Review those separately before assuming that changing your home removes an existing filing duty.
Ask payroll for the current National Insurance deductions and the benefits included in the employment package. Keep the employee deduction distinct from the employer's contribution and record the wage ceiling used in the calculation. For self-employment, identify the applicable registration and contribution category rather than using an employee payslip as the model.
After arrival, replace estimated electricity, transport and food costs with your own bills. Record one-off purchases separately, and retain a liquid reserve for travel or treatment that your ordinary monthly budget does not cover. Do not convert one advertised Nassau apartment into a national monthly living-cost figure.
05Arrange school placement and allow time for student immigration
For a school option on New Providence, St Andrew's International School provides admissions visits on Yamacraw Hill Road and offers virtual conversations for families unable to travel. Discuss the child's age, current curriculum, support needs and proposed arrival date before choosing a home around that school.
- Request the admissions process and records for the intended year level.
- Prepare reports, identity documents and relevant learning-support information.
- Arrange the requested meeting or assessment and obtain the placement decision.
- Request the complete fee schedule, including transport and additional services.
- Coordinate the child's immigration application with the actual school start date.
For university, use the University of The Bahamas' international admission requirements. Applicants must meet the degree's entry conditions; overseas academic records need the specified credential evaluation, and applicants whose first language is not English need proficiency evidence. Identify the campus and course before planning housing or travel.
The university's provisional offer is a stage in the process, not permission to register for classes. Its instructions require Form I and the provisional letter to reach Immigration at least six months before expected enrolment. Full acceptance requires the university medical form, applicable evaluations and evidence of immigration permission to study. Allow this sequence to shape the intended intake.
Keep the school or university correspondence together with the immigration file. Ask admissions to confirm the next available intake and current deadlines rather than assuming arrival during a term creates an immediate place. Budget tuition, books, transport, insurance and accommodation separately, and retain the institution's written conditions before paying for a long lease.
06Establish the residence basis and test the retirement household
Begin with the immigration category rather than a retirement-property advertisement. The department provides separate home-owner residence and permanent-residence services. Ask which category fits your circumstances, what evidence of funds and accommodation it requires, and whether the resulting permission restricts work. Do not treat pension income or property ownership alone as an issued residence document.
- Explain nationality, intended duration, pension income and accompanying household members to Immigration.
- Request the current checklist and charges for the applicable category.
- Review any proposed property transaction independently from the immigration application.
- Arrange pension-payment access and retain funds available for ordinary bills.
- Confirm healthcare cover and the route to ongoing treatment on the chosen island.
- Coordinate departure with the application's processing-location instructions and decision.
The home-owner category requires evidence of a primary home outside The Bahamas as well as a habitable Bahamian home. Its checklist includes the registered conveyance, current Real Property Tax payment and International Landholding Certificate, alongside identity and application records. This category should not be treated as permission based solely on renting a retirement home. The permanent-residence page reviewed in October 2026 states a minimum economic investment of BSD 1 million through real estate or Central Bank Zero Coupon Bonds, with the asset held for at least ten years. This is a separate application category, not a retirement-income threshold or a guarantee of approval.
Test the home as a place to live throughout the year: access to the entrance, water storage, power arrangements and the journey to appointments. Price necessary inter-island treatment or travel separately. A property that suits a short holiday may need different services for someone managing regular prescriptions and medical appointments.
Ask the pension administrator which address and tax-residence updates it requires and how overseas payments are delivered. Keep payment records and any continuing obligations in your former country alongside the Bahamian household file. Arrange each accompanying person's status separately and identify who will help with appointments or document collection when needed.
07Time the document file and arrange belongings and pets
Use the official Permit to Reside application set for the identity, address and household details needed by that category. It calls for separate applications for a spouse or dependant who will live in The Bahamas. Assemble records person by person, and keep originals and secure copies accessible separately from shipped possessions.
- Check the passport and civil records for each traveller.
- Match the application form to the purpose of residence or employment.
- Schedule medical and police documents within the applicable checklist's validity periods.
- Arrange the required English translations and certification.
- Prepare an inventory for the carrier and confirm the customs procedure for the actual shipment.
For dogs and cats, the Department of Agriculture's published import requirements specify a minimum age of six months and microchip identification. The rabies timing depends on the vaccine: at least one month and no more than ten months before import for a one-year vaccine, or no more than thirty-four months for a three-year vaccine. The document also specifies species-specific vaccination and parasite conditions.
Arrange the import permission before travel using the animal-import application. Coordinate the veterinarian's IMP1(B) signature within forty-eight hours before arrival and the examination by a licensed veterinarian within forty-eight hours after arrival. Keep the origin health certificate and issued permission with the person travelling with the animal. The permit's stated validity is one entry within one year unless its own conditions say otherwise.
Give the Veterinary Services Unit the actual species and itinerary if the animal is not a dog or cat; do not apply that checklist automatically to birds or other pets. Confirm airline carriage, transit conditions and the landlord's agreement separately. Reserve the veterinary appointment on the destination island before choosing a flight that would make the arrival deadline difficult.
08Reach the agreed home and record the entry conditions
Carry the travel document, relevant permission decision and accommodation details together. Use the Immigration Department's entry-requirements service to identify the rules for your nationality and journey before boarding; do not assume that a school or employer's letter replaces a required visa or permission. Keep each child's records accessible separately.
- Present the documents supporting the actual purpose of entry.
- Check the allowed stay and any instructions recorded at the border.
- Complete the customs declaration applying to your belongings.
- Reach the accommodation using the agreed pickup or transport arrangement.
- Confirm the host, employer or institution can reach you on a working number.
- Book outstanding appointments and enter expiry dates in the household calendar.
In New Providence, identify the journey from Lynden Pindling International Airport to the exact home, including luggage and a late arrival. For another island, confirm the onward flight or ferry with its operator and allow for collecting belongings and reaching the next departure point. Do not build the arrival day around an unconfirmed connection.
Keep the first few days focused on the records and services needed to function: access to money, essential medication, insurance contacts and the next immigration or employment task. Inspect the accommodation's water, electricity and locks, and document anything that needs the owner's attention before unpacking the shipment.
If a pet arrives with you, complete the veterinary timing described in step seven. Contact the destination veterinarian as soon as the arrival time is known rather than waiting until other household errands are finished. Retain the travel and import records with the animal's medical file.
09Establish National Insurance and the applicable tax records
For employment, coordinate National Insurance registration with payroll. The NIB registration form distinguishes non-Bahamian applicants and identifies the work permit and passport among the supporting documents. Use the form and the local office's instructions for your actual category; registration is not a substitute for permission to work.
- Confirm whether you already hold a National Insurance number and provide it to payroll.
- Prepare the registration form and the identity and status documents requested.
- Check the issued name, date of birth and contact details against your passport.
- Obtain the number and card-collection instructions and retain the application record.
- Ask payroll how contributions will be recorded and how you can inspect the record.
The National Insurance Board's current portal directory identifies Employer Self Service for employee registration, contribution statements and payments. Agree with the employer who completes those tasks; creating your own online login does not prove that an employer's contribution has been recorded.
If business, property or another tax obligation applies, use the Department of Inland Revenue's One Tax service. Its current information says taxpayers need a Bahamas Identification Number, BIN, to access tax services. Confirm the registration category and supporting evidence with the department before following an older VAT-only account guide. Keep tax-service credentials separate from banking and immigration identifiers.
Maintain a permission calendar for each household member. Record the actual expiry, the relevant renewal service and the documents that need updating; tell the responsible institution when contact or accommodation details change. A useful local-record file contains the issued identifiers, submission receipts and decisions together, so you can answer a provider's request without searching through travel luggage.

10Prepare the bank's identification file and test incoming funds
Contact a bank about your residence situation before assuming its online application fits your documents. RBC's Bahamas account information lists two valid identity documents, residential-address evidence and, for non-resident clients, a reputable bank reference or current statement and a work permit where applicable. Ask the branch which evidence it accepts when the utility bill is still in the landlord's name.
- Explain the intended account use, nationality, residence and source of funds.
- Prepare the requested original identity documents and address evidence.
- Obtain a current statement or reference from your existing bank where required.
- Compare the actual product's balance requirements, maintenance, card and transfer charges.
- Confirm incoming-transfer instructions and test a small transfer.
- Set up secure digital access and test a household payment before relying on it.
The bank's regional pages can display information for several Caribbean markets together. Obtain the Bahamas product terms from the branch before quoting an opening balance or fee in your budget; an amount shown elsewhere on that page may belong to a different country or currency.
Keep Bahamian-dollar spending separate from any foreign-currency account used for overseas funds. Ask the bank about conversion, transfer evidence and any exchange-control arrangements applying to your status and transaction. An immigration residence category and the bank's account classification need not answer every financial question in the same way.
For rent and utilities, obtain the recipient and customer-reference details before paying. Retain receipts that identify the period covered, and keep a backup payment method while the new account is assessed. Ask separately about business accounts or borrowing; opening a personal deposit account does not establish credit eligibility.
11Read the lease and record the property's services at handover
Request a lease identifying the home, parties, rent, duration and notice arrangements. Confirm the owner's identity or the agent's authority, then read the repair, occupancy, pet and subletting provisions. Identify whether the advertised figure includes any utilities, maintenance or other charges.
- Inspect the home and test water, electricity, cooling, windows and locks.
- Ask about water storage, backup power and responsibility for equipment servicing.
- Agree the deposit, payment schedule and return conditions in writing.
- Clarify responsibility for storm preparation and damage reporting.
- Record furniture, appliances, keys and meter readings with dated photographs.
- Keep signed copies and separate receipts for rent and the deposit.
Do not assume that every lease benefits from the same rent-control rules. The government's published Rent Control Act sets geographical and property-value conditions for its protection. Ask a Bahamian adviser or the responsible authority to determine coverage for the actual property before relying on a rule from a general rental summary.
Make the repair process practical: obtain the owner's contact, the building manager's details and instructions for urgent faults. Record existing damage before moving belongings in, and agree how requests will be reported. If a generator or water tank is shared, ask how running costs and access are allocated.
Align the lease with the permission timetable. Obtain a written explanation of any early-exit arrangement if an application, job or course does not proceed as expected. Read that provision before paying rather than assuming that an immigration decision automatically cancels a private housing contract. Compare homes using the full cost and services you will receive, not only the advertised monthly rent.

12Confirm eligibility and arrange care beyond the primary-care package
Use NHI Bahamas' enrolment instructions to establish your eligibility and application. The service identifies an NIB Smart Card and citizenship or legal residence as requirements. Its eligibility explanation also refers to demonstrating legal residence within the preceding six months. Ask the authority how that evidence applies to your arrival and status rather than assuming a newly issued immigration document alone completes enrolment.
- Confirm eligibility and gather the Smart Card and requested residence evidence.
- Complete the application through the service's current enrolment channel.
- Select a registered primary-care provider suited to your island and household.
- Wait for confirmation of enrolment and provider selection before relying on that arrangement.
- Review which additional services require separate insurance or payment.
The enrolment page states that confirmation or a request for more documents can be expected within ten business days. Keep the submission record and respond to outstanding-document requests. Establish the position for each household member individually, especially if arrival dates or residence categories differ.
The NHI benefits FAQ describes covered primary-care services without out-of-pocket payment at access. Do not treat that as a promise that every hospital admission, specialist procedure, prescription or overseas transfer is covered. Obtain the current package and ask the treating provider and insurer how the particular service is authorised and billed.
Compare employer, private or international cover for the household's remaining needs. Ask about existing conditions, outpatient treatment, hospital networks, excesses and claim evidence. If your island's treatment options make a transfer necessary, confirm the policy's transport and evacuation provisions explicitly.
Carry a medical summary, relevant results and prescriptions, and arrange a local review before repeat medicines run out. Locate the actual clinic serving your home and record its appointment and urgent-care instructions. Keep the immigration medical certificate separate from the records supporting ongoing treatment: passing an application's medical requirement does not establish comprehensive healthcare cover.
13Connect the correct island utilities and establish communications
Identify the electricity provider for the actual address. Bahamas Power and Light's customer service provides connection and account-transfer information, while Grand Bahama Power's application service supplies its own connection process. Use the provider serving the home rather than assuming one set of forms works throughout the country.
- Record the meter number, readings and date at handover.
- Obtain the landlord's authorisation and tenancy evidence requested by the provider.
- Prepare the identity and status documents for your account category.
- Request the deposit quotation and complete the supply agreement.
- Confirm activation and the correct customer reference for payments.
BPL's published renter checklist calls for National Insurance identification, another government photo ID and a valid work permit or permanent-residence permit for non-Bahamian applicants. If you hold a different residence document, ask customer service to confirm the appropriate arrangement before assuming it is accepted. The checklist bases the security deposit on projected or historical consumption; obtain the amount for your home.
Ask the owner which water service or storage system supplies the property and how bills and maintenance are handled. Arrange internet only after the provider confirms availability at the exact building. Obtain installation, equipment, monthly and cancellation terms in writing, and test coverage where you will work or study.
For a mobile number, compare the current prepaid or postpaid offer from BTC or ALIV, then confirm coverage at the home and on your usual route. Take the identity documents requested for the actual subscription and test calls, texts and data before relying on the number for banking. ALIV's eSIM instructions require a compatible device; check the manufacturer's specifications or the EID before choosing that option. The provider says a move to a new device requires a store visit for a new eSIM.
For local travel, price the journey you actually need at the relevant time, including the route to a school or medical appointment. Confirm operating hours before relying on public transport for a late shift. For inter-island travel, use the operator links identified earlier and keep the current schedule and booking conditions; a useful connection for an occasional trip may not support a daily routine.
14Complete the first-month file and build an island routine
Review what has been issued and activated, not only what you applied for. Keep each household member's permission, identity evidence, medical and education records alongside the lease, account details and utility agreements. Record who handles each outstanding task, with a date and contact for the responsible institution.
- Check names, addresses and expiry dates on the records received.
- Confirm payroll and National Insurance details, or the records applying to your own income arrangement.
- Test rent and utility payments and retain the customer references.
- Verify healthcare enrolment or insurance, including ongoing medication arrangements.
- Test the school or work journey at its normal time.
- Replace budget estimates with the first bills and separate arrival purchases from ordinary spending.
Learn the neighbourhood's practical arrangements: refuse collection, the nearest pharmacy, the building's water and power systems and the contact for urgent repairs. Ask the landlord to demonstrate equipment you are expected to operate. Keep emergency contacts and essential records available offline if the household depends on internet access to retrieve them.
Build community through places you can reach consistently. Ask the school, university, workplace or a local community organisation about current activities, then confirm the time and registration arrangements with the organiser. A Nassau household's schedule will differ from a Freeport base or a smaller settlement; choose a regular activity that fits the transport you actually use.
Review the optional branches of the move. A university applicant needs the study-permission and full-admission sequence completed; a worker needs the employer-led records current; a retiree should confirm pension access and treatment arrangements. Keep the household's renewal calendar linked to those actual categories rather than copying a checklist intended for someone else's status.
