Moving & Living - Bahrain - Complete Guide
Move to Bahrain step by step: arrange the right work and residence permission, plan schools and household costs, register your identity and set up housing, banking, healthcare and transport.

Life in Bahrain takes shape around a particular neighbourhood: a Manama workplace, a Muharraq household or a school journey through Riffa. Plan those daily trips alongside the residence permission, employment arrangements and registered address that let you set up services.
This fourteen-step journey explains the order of a move, from employer applications and optional school or retirement planning to identity registration, rent, electricity, healthcare and a working first-month routine. Follow the branch that fits your nationality, household and reason for moving.

Follow your moving journey
Start at step 1, or jump to the task you are working on.
01Choose the neighbourhood around your work and household journeys
Start with your workplace or campus address, then compare homes around the journeys your household will make. Manama, Muharraq and Riffa are useful starting points for different searches; the right choice depends on the actual destination, school and services rather than a general description of Bahrain as compact.
| Starting area | Places to investigate | What to test |
|---|---|---|
| Manama | Juffair, Adliya or another neighbourhood serving the work address | The complete journey, parking or public-transport connection and household costs. |
| Muharraq | Homes near the actual institution or employment base | Local errands and any crossing required for the daily commute. |
| Riffa or another town | The neighbourhood surrounding your household's main destination | School transport, medical access and the building's services. |
- Locate work, school and likely medical appointments on a map.
- Compare properties by the exact building and entrance, not only the district name.
- Ask whether electricity, water, internet and cooling charges are included.
- Obtain the written rent, deposit and notice terms.
- Inspect the home and test the usual journey before committing to a longer lease.
Check how the accommodation address will appear on local records and who supplies the owner or tenancy evidence. Keep the building number, road number and block details consistent across the household file. A convenient home still needs the documents required by the services you will use.
Begin with temporary accommodation that gives you time to view properties without delaying the immigration sequence. Ask the employer or institution about the appointments requiring your presence and arrange housing around those dates. Confirm the handover condition, cooling equipment and responsibility for maintenance before moving your belongings.

02Match the entry, residence and work procedures to your activity
Use Bahrain's official visa services to identify the entry procedure for your nationality and purpose. Visitor eligibility is separate from the arrangements for taking employment or living long term. Identify the activity first, then ask the responsible employer or authority which permission and application location apply.
- Record nationality, intended activity, household members and proposed arrival date.
- Identify the entry and residence category reflecting that activity.
- Confirm whether the employer submits a new recruitment application or you hold an existing residence category.
- Collect the category's identity, medical and other supporting evidence.
- Wait for the required permission and retain its conditions before arranging the activity's start.
Where your residence was issued outside LMRA, the government's work-permit service for expatriates already authorised to reside remains a separate process. It requires at least six months remaining on the residence permission and identifies supporting identity records and approvals for specialised professions. Do not assume every residence document permits unrestricted paid employment.
The government also provides a specific work-permit service for Golden Visa holders. Use the procedure applying to that status rather than treating the programme's residence benefits as a replacement for all employment paperwork.
A different registered-worker service has restrictions for people already in Bahrain with specified previous permit circumstances; visitor-visa holders are not eligible. It is not an ordinary route for someone abroad to arrive as a visitor and begin working. Keep the first application, any transfer and accompanying-family arrangements distinct in your planning file.
03Agree the employer's permit application and the permitted role
The government's New Work Permit service allows employers to apply for expatriate employees on their commercial registrations. Ask the employer to identify the application category, its own submission responsibilities and the evidence you must provide. Keep the role and workplace in the contract aligned with the permission being requested.
- Obtain the written duties, salary, benefits and proposed start date.
- Give the employer the passport records and any existing Bahrain personal number.
- Arrange the required medical examination in the home or current country of residence.
- Prepare qualification and professional-approval evidence where the job requires it.
- Track the employer's submission and confirm the issued permission before beginning work.
The service specifies that the medical report must not be more than two months old. If you previously held a Bahrain personal number, the employer must reuse it in the application. Discuss any existing multiple-entry permission with the employer because the service identifies a cancellation requirement before submission. Do not arrange that change independently without coordinating the entire lawful-stay sequence.
For a business, use the Ministry of Industry and Commerce's Sijilat services to identify the activity, legal form and required licences or approvals. Commercial registration and immigration permission answer different questions; establishing a company does not by itself complete residence or permission to perform every activity.
The ministry's virtual-registration guidance restricts Sijili to Bahraini nationals. A foreign newcomer should not treat that simplified route as a general freelance licence. Select a structure for which your nationality and intended activity qualify, then confirm the accompanying residence and work arrangements with the relevant authorities.
For overseas remote work, explain the actual employment or invoicing arrangement, where you will perform the services and how long you intend to stay. Establish the applicable permission before choosing a long lease around that income. Agree with any local employer who manages renewal, professional approvals and family paperwork, and retain copies in your own household file.
04Price the move and establish the household's tax and deduction position
Use Bahraini dinars, BHD, throughout the budget and label any foreign-currency quotation. Separate the cost of arriving from an ordinary month: application work, travel, temporary accommodation and deposits may be paid before your income reaches the local account.
| Arrival spending | Recurring spending | Evidence to request |
|---|---|---|
| Travel, shipping and temporary housing | Rent, electricity, water and cooling | Carrier quotations, lease and recent building bills. |
| Deposit, furnishings and document preparation | Food, phone, internet and transport | Written rental terms and current provider offers. |
| Application and medical-document charges | Insurance, school and treatment | Authority payment instructions and household contracts. |
The national portal's VAT explanation identifies a standard rate of 10%, with zero-rated and exempt categories. Ask whether a quotation includes the applicable tax. A hypothetical standard-rated service priced at BHD 20 before VAT would cost BHD 22; this is a calculation, not a quoted local service price.
For independent economic activity, the same guidance identifies the BHD 37,500 annual-supplies mandatory registration threshold. Establish the treatment of your actual activity with the National Bureau for Revenue, including any category-specific rules, before collecting VAT or assuming that an overseas customer removes every obligation.
Ask payroll for the deductions applying to your nationality and employment arrangement and an explanation of employer-funded benefits. Review any continuing tax filing, pension or business duties in another country separately. Immigration residence, the bank's classification and foreign tax residence do not necessarily use the same test.
Compare homes using the full recurring payment. Record the utility cap where an inclusive rental offer has one, and ask how excess consumption is billed. After arrival, replace estimates with your own rent, bills and payslip. Keep setup purchases separate so a first-month furniture bill does not become a supposed national monthly cost of living.
05Apply for school placement or the correct university category
The British School of Bahrain's admissions procedure provides one practical starting point. Prepare the child's passport, immunisation record, photograph and school report, each parent's passport, and CPR cards if already available. Include a previous-school transfer certificate where available; ask admissions about the Ministry of Education's requirements for your child's move.
- Discuss the intended year level, previous curriculum and support needs.
- Submit the application with the relevant records.
- Complete the age-appropriate assessments arranged by the school.
- Obtain the placement decision and read the Parent-School Agreement.
- Confirm the fees, start date and transport before finalising housing.
The page reviewed in October 2026 lists a BHD 50 application fee. For successful applicants, enrolment includes signing the agreement, a non-refundable registration fee of up to BHD 250 and a BHD 50 book deposit. These are specified admission charges, not the full tuition budget. Confirm the current invoice and all required records before assuming enrolment is complete.
For higher education, begin with the University of Bahrain's international admission conditions. Its undergraduate rules distinguish GCC nationals, people with a Bahraini parent or spouse, and other Arab or foreign applicants. For the latter groups, this page specifies secondary schooling within Bahrain; it also requests a valid residence permit except for GCC students. Do not assume an overseas school qualification alone makes every foreign applicant eligible.
The same page lists electronic application channels for graduates of schools outside Bahrain. That channel description does not resolve the nationality restriction above. If those instructions appear inconsistent for your circumstances, obtain a written eligibility answer from the university's Student Service Center before paying or planning travel. Eligible private-school and overseas-school categories use the university's admission system; specified public-school categories use the national portal. The university announces intake dates through those systems. For postgraduate applicants, the page requires valid residence except for GCC students, with admission dependent on academic rules and available places.
Ask the institution how admission and the appropriate residence procedure fit together, especially if you do not yet hold a Bahrain residence document. Budget tuition, transport, accommodation and insurance separately. Keep a written decision and its conditions in the household file; a submitted form is not a promise of a place or permission to work alongside study.
06Assess the actual retirement residence category before moving funds
Bahrain's Golden Residency eligibility criteria distinguish resident and non-resident retirees. The page reviewed in October 2026 identifies resident retirees who worked in Bahrain for at least fifteen years with an average pension of at least BHD 2,000, and non-resident retirees with an average pension of at least BHD 4,000. These are category conditions, not estimates of household spending.
- Identify whether your history matches the resident or non-resident retirement category.
- Request the required pension, identity and residence-history evidence.
- Confirm the application channel, charges and accompanying-family procedure.
- Arrange pension transfers and keep an accessible fund for ordinary bills.
- Confirm health insurance and the providers needed for ongoing treatment.
- Wait for the relevant decision before relying on the permission for a permanent move.
The programme also publishes a property-owner category based on a total personal ownership share of at least BHD 130,000 at purchase, potentially across multiple properties. It is a separate basis and does not mean a purchase guarantees approval. Review title, eligibility, transaction costs and immigration conditions independently before transferring capital.
If you intend to work after retiring, revisit the work-permit procedure for your residence status. A pension and a residence decision do not complete the separate employment service discussed earlier. Confirm each accompanying person's position rather than assuming the principal applicant's evidence covers the whole household.
Test the neighbourhood around the retirement routine: access to the home, cooling and maintenance, appointments, groceries and reliable transport. Obtain insurance wording for existing conditions and ongoing prescriptions. Keep pension records and any duties in the country paying the pension together with the Bahrain file, and schedule renewals around the documents actually issued.
07Prepare the application file and arrange belongings and pets
Organise records by person and application category. Keep passports, civil records, employment or admission correspondence and the evidence supporting residence together. Ask the receiving authority which documents require translation, attestation or professional verification before paying for a general document package.
- Check the passport details against the application and proposed permission.
- Collect the civil and qualification records needed for the actual category.
- Arrange the medical evidence and any required certification within its validity period.
- Obtain the accommodation details and supporting owner or tenancy records.
- Keep originals accessible and secure copies separate from shipped belongings.
Use an inventory for a household shipment, distinguishing ordinary possessions from equipment, medicines and regulated items. Give the carrier the actual contents and values and obtain its declaration and delivery instructions. Confirm storage and collection arrangements if the shipment arrives before the home or local records are ready.
For pets, begin with the Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture's personal live-animal import service. It provides an application for individuals importing live animals and birds, with supporting documents required. Its linked status-enquiry service lets you follow a submitted request and respond to further actions.
I could not verify a complete current species-and-origin checklist from the service description. Give the ministry the animal's species, origin, transit route and travel date, and obtain the applicable vaccination, identification, certificate and permission conditions before booking transport. Do not infer that one country's dog certificate meets Bahrain's requirements or apply a commercial-import process to a household pet.
Arrange airline carriage and the landlord's acceptance separately. Keep issued permission and veterinary records with the person travelling with the animal, and check transit conditions with the relevant authorities. For medicines, retain the prescription and ask about any specific import evidence for the actual product rather than treating every medicine as ordinary baggage.
08Complete arrival formalities and reach the agreed address
Keep the passport, entry or work permission and accommodation address accessible throughout the flight. For employer-sponsored arrival, agree who meets you and which formalities remain. Retain your own copies of the issued records even where the employer coordinates the process.
- Present the travel document matching the permission.
- Check the entry date and any stay conditions recorded.
- Complete the declarations applying to your belongings.
- Confirm outstanding medical, biometric or identity appointments with the responsible institution.
- Reach the home and test a working contact number and payment method.
- Record each deadline in the household calendar.
The LMRA's arrival guidance requires relevant expatriate workers to provide biometric data within one month of first entry. Arrange the appointment through the employer or authority rather than waiting until the household is settled. Keep the appointment record and ask what evidence to bring for your case.
At Bahrain International Airport, the airport's bus instructions place departures near exit 4 on the arrivals level, zone 4A. Routes include A1 and A2 serving different onward destinations. Check the live operator information and the final journey to the home before choosing the bus, especially with children or substantial luggage.
The airport page reviewed in October 2026 lists a paper single-journey fare of BHD 0.300. Confirm the payment and destination when boarding; a fare quote does not establish that the selected departure reaches your building. Keep the host's building, road and block details available offline, and inspect the accommodation's basic services before putting away the travel file.
09Complete the identity-card process for your residence category
Use the Information and eGovernment Authority's identity-card services for your actual category. The service distinguishes people registered with LMRA from other non-Bahraini residents. The card, often called the CPR or Smart Card, supports dealings with institutions, but its expiry is separate from the validity of immigration permission.
- Confirm that the relevant residence and LMRA records are ready.
- Gather the valid passport, residence evidence, photograph and address documents required.
- Select the service and appointment appropriate to the applicant's category.
- Complete any required personal attendance or biometric record.
- Check the name, personal number and address on the issued record.
The published category requirements call for a recent photograph and a correct residential address. For non-LMRA applicants whose lease keeps the electricity account in the landlord's name, the list identifies a municipal address statement. Discuss that dependency with the owner before assuming a utility bill in someone else's name will complete your file.
For accompanying family, prepare the original marriage or birth evidence and the applicable attestation. The service identifies personal attendance for certain dependants aged ten or older whose biometrics are not already recorded. Arrange the household's appointments individually rather than expecting one worker's application to issue every family member's card.
Keep the identity-card confirmation, residence decision and employment permission together, with a separate expiry entry for each. Update contact and accommodation information through the responsible services when it changes. Use the same building, road and block details in banking and utility applications so a small address discrepancy does not create avoidable follow-up work.
10Choose an account matching your documents and income
Compare account types before assuming a product named current account is the only choice for everyday payments. BBK's salary-transfer account identifies an original CPR or Smart Card and a passport with the applicable residence permission for non-Bahrainis. Ask the bank which product and opening channel fit your income and status.
- Explain the intended salary, pension, overseas-transfer or business use.
- Prepare original identity and residence records and the requested income evidence.
- Compare minimum balances, maintenance charges, card costs and transfer fees.
- Obtain the IBAN and exact incoming-transfer instructions.
- Test a small transfer, card purchase and bill payment before moving your main balance.
The BBK Lite account information asks non-Bahraini applicants for original CPR, passport and a salary-transfer letter. Its page reviewed in October 2026 states no minimum balance for salaries below BHD 250 and a BHD 20 minimum where salary is BHD 250 or above. This is that product's balance requirement, not a universal bank-opening fee.
Confirm eligibility for a phone-based application before relying on it, and use a branch when the bank needs additional evidence. Maintain your existing payment method while assessment and activation are completed. A residence decision alone does not guarantee every account or credit facility.
When paying rent or household bills, retain the recipient and customer-reference information with the receipt. Ask whether the account supports the currency and transfer route used by the pension administrator or overseas payer. For business activity, obtain the separate account and records appropriate to the commercial registration rather than mixing transactions into an ordinary household account.
11Agree the lease, register it and document the handover
Request the full lease before transferring the deposit. Identify the property, owner or authorised agent, rent, period and notice provisions. An inclusive apartment offer needs a precise explanation of electricity, water, cooling and any consumption cap; record who pays amounts exceeding that cap.
- Inspect cooling, water, appliances, locks and the building's access arrangements.
- Confirm the owner's or representative's authority to let the property.
- Read the payment, deposit-return, repair and permitted-use conditions.
- Agree responsibility for registering the lease and retain its confirmation.
- Record furniture, meter readings, keys and existing damage at handover.
- Keep separate receipts for the deposit and rent.
The Ministry of Justice's Lease Contract Services provide registration, enquiry and validity verification. Registration uses a Standard eKey and includes the required payment. Obtain the registered record rather than assuming that signing a private document has completed the government service.
If you need a municipal Address Proof Certificate, its published requirements include a registered lease, evidence of that registration and both sides of the owner's ID. The lease must be in Arabic or accompanied by the specified certified translation. The service lists a BHD 5 municipal fee and a three-working-day electronic processing time, reviewed here in October 2026; retain the acknowledgement and respond to document queries.
Clarify repairs before moving belongings in: whom to contact for a cooling fault, water interruption or appliance failure, and which costs are your responsibility. Keep dated photographs with the signed inventory and report defects through the agreed channel. Ask about parking, visitors and shared facilities where they affect the daily routine.
Match the lease to your permission and employment timetable. Read any early-exit clause before paying; a changed immigration or work situation does not by itself explain how the private contract ends. Compare the total recurring payment across homes, and keep the address details consistent with the identity and utility records.

12Confirm the actual healthcare scheme and insurance network
Ask the employer or insurer to identify the cover attached to your employment and the date it becomes effective. The Ministry of Health's health-service fee guidance distinguishes categories of non-Bahraini patients, including government employees and families and people enrolled in the primary-care scheme. Do not assume every foreign resident has identical charges or entitlements.
- Obtain the scheme or policy details and the evidence used when attending a facility.
- Confirm the position for each accompanying person.
- Identify the primary-care facility or insurer network serving the home.
- Ask how appointments, referrals and pre-authorisation work for the treatment needed.
- Arrange cover for any gap before local benefits begin.
Read the policy's outpatient, inpatient, prescription and specialist provisions separately. Check existing conditions, maternity where relevant, excesses and claim evidence. An employer's statement that insurance is provided is a starting point; request the actual benefit schedule and the contact for resolving a rejected authorisation.
For an appointment, ask the facility which identity, residence and insurance documents to bring and whether payment is required at access. Keep any referral and approval number with the booking. Obtain a quotation for a service outside the confirmed scheme rather than using a historical fee as the current charge.
Carry a concise medical summary, prescriptions and relevant results, and arrange a review before ongoing medicines run out. Identify a suitable pharmacy and discuss local availability with the treating clinician. Keep urgent-care contacts accessible offline, especially while the new phone and banking arrangements are still being established.
Separate the medical examination supporting the immigration application from healthcare for ordinary life. The examination does not prove that every future treatment is insured. For a retiree, student or household member outside the principal worker's policy, establish their own entitlement or cover and document the route to care.
13Transfer utility accounts and test communications and transport
Complete the housing and banking dependencies before requesting a tenant account. The Electricity and Water Authority's tenant move-in service requires the lease, its registration receipt, identity evidence, an official IBAN certificate and the owner's ID copy. It also requires settlement of any outstanding balance on the tenant.
- Record the meter numbers and readings at handover.
- Collect the lease-registration receipt and the owner's identity copy.
- Obtain the official IBAN certificate and the identity evidence for your status.
- Use the eKey service to select Electricity and Water Authority and request the move to the new address, or book the appropriate customer-service appointment.
- Pay the quoted security deposit and retain the account confirmation.
The service lists one working day as its processing time and identifies security-deposit charges without quoting one universal amount. Request the actual deposit and resolve document queries before treating the service as active. If the landlord retains the account under the lease, agree how consumption and any extra charges will be recorded and paid.
For a phone, Batelco's SIM-registration instructions identify a valid passport or Bahraini identity card for non-Bahraini, non-GCC customers. Take the original document and follow the operator's current verification process. Confirm the selected plan's validity, allowance, renewal and cancellation terms, then test calls, texts and data before relying on it for bank access. Arrange fixed internet only after the provider confirms the exact building can be served.
For bus travel, the airport's current transport guidance lists GO Card journeys at BHD 0.275 with a BHD 0.700 daily cap and a BHD 0.500 card purchase fee, reviewed here in October 2026. Compare the payment method with your actual journey pattern and use the operator's live departure information. Card cost is separate from travel credit.
Test the work or school route at its normal time, including the final walk and any return trip after a late finish. If using a car, establish the licence and insurance arrangements for your status before relying on an overseas driving document. Keep the transport budget linked to the route you actually use rather than a national monthly estimate.

14Close the first-month tasks and build a neighbourhood routine
Review the issued records and activated services together. Put each person's passport, residence and identity documents alongside employment or admission decisions, the registered lease, utility records and insurance evidence. Add an expiry or follow-up date for every outstanding item and identify who handles it.
- Check names, personal numbers and address details across the household records.
- Confirm the first salary or overseas transfer and retain payment references.
- Test rent and utility payments against the correct customer account.
- Arrange ongoing healthcare appointments and medicines.
- Confirm the school or workplace journey and any transport booking.
- Review actual bills against the budget, keeping arrival purchases separate.
Learn the building's everyday arrangements: waste collection, cooling maintenance, parking and the contact for urgent faults. Ask the owner to demonstrate equipment you are expected to operate. Save essential contacts and address details offline so you can retrieve them while the phone or home internet is unavailable.
Build community through a regular activity that fits your location and timetable. Ask the school, university or employer about current language classes, sports or community events, then confirm the meeting and registration details with the organiser. Someone based in Muharraq has a different weekly journey from a household in Riffa; choose participation you can sustain.
Revisit the optional branches of the guide once the home functions. A retiree should keep pension and treatment arrangements current; a student should track admission and study conditions; an employed newcomer should coordinate permit renewals with the employer. Do not replace those category-specific duties with a general list copied from another household.
Finally, retain copies of the confirmations that make the routine possible. A submitted form, an appointment booking and an issued document are different stages. Mark a task complete when the responsible institution confirms the outcome, and keep the evidence where you can find it for the next renewal or change of address.
