Life in Barbados can take shape around a Bridgetown workplace, a Speightstown or Oistins home, or a school journey into St John. Start with the places the household will use, then connect the home and services to the permission covering the intended stay and work.

This fourteen-step guide follows the move from preparation to a functioning first month. It explains local employment and remote-work applications, family school procedures, pet clearance, identity and tax records, rental handover, banking, healthcare and provider-specific utility setup.

Follow your moving journey

Start at step 1, or jump to the task you are working on.

Before departure; test the route before signing a lease

01Choose the town around the household's daily trips

Begin with the actual workplace or campus. Bridgetown, Warrens, Holetown, Speightstown and Oistins offer different starting points for a home search. Mark work, school, shops and medical appointments together, then compare the complete journey from each proposed home.

Investigate areas through the household's own route
AreaStarting pointWhat to test
BridgetownFairchild Street and Princess Alice terminal connections. The onward service and final walk to the destination.
Warrens or HoletownThe workplace and routes serving it.Normal starting and finishing times.
Speightstown or OistinsThe listed connections between the towns.Access from the home and the return trip.
St JohnThe chosen eastern campus and home options. The school journey alongside other errands.

Use the Transport Board's Route Finder to identify the service. It lists the Bridgetown shuttle between Fairchild Street and Princess Alice, Jackson/Warrens connections and the ABC Highway service between Speightstown and Oistins. Open the relevant route and confirm the current timetable for the intended day. A route listing does not promise a door-to-door commute.

Start with a short stay that leaves time for viewings and appointments. At each home, test access, water, ventilation, mobile reception and remote-work space. Ask which utilities and common charges are included, and request representative bills with dates and billing periods. Record the same items for each candidate so the comparison reflects the household's needs.

02Choose the permission for local work, remote work or residence

Choose the route before arranging the final home. Local employment may involve regional movement rights or the employer-led permit in the next step. Remote employment, an immigrant-status application and visitor entry are different arrangements with different conditions. Use the Immigration Department's services page to reach the online entry-visa process when your nationality requires it; an entry visa does not settle the permission for every activity after arrival.

First assess CARICOM movement rights. From October 2025, the enhanced arrangement covers citizens of Barbados, Belize, Dominica and St Vincent and the Grenadines moving among those countries, with indefinite residence and work without a work permit or skills certificate. Qualifying accompanying family includes spouses, unmarried children under eighteen or under twenty-five in full-time education, and wholly dependent parents. Other CSME nationals may qualify through skilled, business-establishment or service-provider routes; ordinary six-month visitor entry does not grant work rights. Identify the applicable regime with Immigration and provide citizenship and family evidence before relying on it.

For qualifying remote work, the official twelve-month Welcome Stamp application asks for employer and work details, passport information, proposed arrival and accompanying-family records. Its income declaration refers to expected earnings of at least US$50,000 over the next twelve months and/or the means to support the applicant and accompanying household. The application also requires a declaration that the applicant and included family members will not accept employment from or offer services to the listed Barbados-based people or entities. This route is therefore not an ordinary local-job permit.

  1. Identify the employer or business location and describe the intended activity accurately.
  2. Select a new application or renewal on the official form.
  3. Enter the passport, contact and household information, including accompanying dependants.
  4. Upload the required photograph, passport biodata and evidence of dependant relationships.
  5. Submit the application and retain its reference and resulting decision.
  6. On approval, follow the official payment and entry instructions.

For new applications, the form lists non-refundable approval fees of US$2,000 for an individual and US$3,000 for a family bundle, reviewed on 13 October 2026. Confirm that the application includes the people who will travel and keep each person's issued documents available.

The Remote Employment Act also requires employment outside Barbados, qualifying externally generated income and valid health insurance for the stamp period. The application declaration's reference to support funds does not itself waive those statutory conditions. The 2021 amendment allows renewal subject to satisfying the conditions and ministerial approval; renewal is a further application, not automatic permanent residence. Obtain the renewal assessment rather than reusing a new-application fee.

For a different residence basis, consult the Immigrant Status requirements under the stated sections of the Immigration Act. The department lists certified A1 forms, birth and relevant family records, medical evidence, character certificates and other supporting documents. It requires police certificates from countries where the applicant lived for at least six months during the previous three years, and official English translations for foreign-language certificates. The checklist alone does not establish that every applicant is eligible. Identify the legal basis with the department and submit the evidence for that basis, rather than treating a visitor extension as an assured settlement route.

Before starting work; coordinate the application before departure

03Have the employer apply for the permit covering your role

For employment requiring an ordinary permit, begin with the Immigration Department's work-permit procedure. The employer or sponsor submits the application. Short-term permits can cover up to eleven months; long-term permits can cover up to three years and require the employer to establish that no willing, capable resident or Barbadian national can fill the position. Neither a visitor admission nor a proposed contract replaces the permission to work.

  1. Agree the job, salary, duties, workplace and intended dates in writing.
  2. Have the employer identify the short-term or long-term category and prepare its supporting letter.
  3. Provide the passport biodata and photographs requested for the category.
  4. For a long-term application, prepare qualifications, character references and the medical records, including X-ray reports.
  5. Complete the appropriate C-series forms with the employer.
  6. Retain the issued permission and confirm the authorised start arrangements.

The department lists a BDS300 application fee; the final fee varies with the employment category and duration. Obtain the final assessment before treating that first payment as the whole cost. For a short-term application requiring an appointment, use the department's booking instructions and bring the printed confirmation. The confirmation's barcode is needed to change or cancel the booking.

Keep an application copy with the contract and identify who handles requests for additional records. If the job changes, ask the employer to resolve the effect on the permit before assuming the previous approval covers the new arrangement. For a business, arrange the entity, investment and activity approvals as well as the foreign person's permission; company registration does not itself answer the work question.

Before accepting the package or committing to housing

04Build the move budget and establish the tax position

Separate arrival payments from ordinary monthly bills. Preserve the currency of each quote: Barbados-dollar rent, US-dollar permission charges and an overseas shipment invoice are not interchangeable figures. Record the date, payment period and inclusions.

Use actual household and provider quotations

The Transport Board fare policy lists BDS$3.50 per ordinary bus journey, with exact fare and no change. Forty paid journeys would cost BDS$140. This calculated example, reviewed on 13 October 2026, is not a monthly transport estimate for every resident. Count the journeys the household will make and assess concessions separately.

The Barbados Revenue Authority's individual guidance identifies people spending more than 182 days in an income year and those with ordinarily resident status as tax resident. It distinguishes resident-and-domiciled individuals from resident-but-not-domiciled individuals in the treatment of worldwide and foreign-source income. Provide the adviser with the actual travel history, domicile circumstances and income sources.

  1. List salary, remote-work receipts, business income and pensions with their paying country.
  2. Determine the income year and treatment of the actual immigration category.
  3. Arrange taxpayer records, payroll withholding and required returns.
  4. Retain payslips, payment evidence and overseas-transfer records.
  5. Revise the budget after the first real household bills.

Welcome Stamp work has a statutory exception: sections 4 and 6 of the Remote Employment Act 2020 provide the specified non-resident treatment and income provisions for a person granted the stamp. Apply that programme treatment to the actual permission instead of using the ordinary day-count rule alone. Establish any continuing obligations in the country paying the income separately.

Optional; begin before choosing the final home

05Obtain the child's immigration record and school placement

For Welcome Stamp households, follow the education ministry's published sequence. Once the family's C5 application is approved, the school-aged child's passport receives a student-visa endorsement. The ministry says a separate student-visa application is not required in this programme; that does not remove the child's endorsement from the process.

  1. Complete the household's immigration application and obtain the child's required passport endorsement.
  2. Choose the relevant school and contact it about a place.
  3. For a public-school request, use the ministry's nursery, primary or secondary request form appropriate to the child.
  4. For a private school, complete its own registration and assessment process.
  5. After acceptance, complete the School Welcome Visa Registration Form and the institution's remaining enrolment tasks.

Public-school allocation depends on space. The ministry identifies limited secondary availability and no space in its public special schools; obtain a placement decision suited to the child's needs before relying on a particular campus.

A private starting point is The Codrington School's current admissions process. Register interest, arrange a visit or discussion, then use the Student Application process and provide the requested school records. The school requires its application and screening fee before review, and describes screening for MYP and DP applicants. It normally allows two weeks to confirm a firm offer; mid-year admission depends on capacity and the child's transition into the programme. Obtain the current fee statement with the offer instead of using an older year's tuition schedule.

Location matters: the school's own description places it in the eastern parish of St John, overlooking Consett Bay. Test the complete journey from the proposed home and arrange the actual transport before committing to the lease. A west-coast home and a rural east-coast school should be assessed as a household route, not as interchangeable island addresses.

When a student visa is required outside the Welcome Stamp family procedure, use the Immigration Department's student-visa requirements. The published list includes the school's acceptance, course information, accommodation and adequate financial support. Ask the institution which forms it must complete and retain its admissions decision separately from the immigration approval.

Optional; before a property commitment or indefinite move

06Establish the residence category before committing pension funds

Eligible citizens can use the regional residence rights described in the immigration step. Other applicants should establish the permission fitting their circumstances. The Immigration Department's Special Entry Permit checklist requests financial-resource evidence such as pension documents, bank statements and real-estate records, alongside identity and property documents and insurance valid in Barbados. The checklist does not set out complete eligibility thresholds for every category. Obtain the department's confirmation of the category and conditions before relying on a property or pension amount.

  1. Describe the stay, nationality, family circumstances and intended activity to the department.
  2. Identify the qualifying category and financial evidence.
  3. Prepare pension-payment records, funds and requested property documents.
  4. Arrange insurance and ongoing care for the required stay.
  5. Obtain the decision and understand renewal and family conditions before a long commitment.

The Special Entry list includes Form B, civil-status records, passport biodata, police character certificates and relevant dependant relationships. Foreign-language records require the stated English translations. Follow the actual assessment for charges; an application payment is not necessarily the full permission cost.

Test the home-to-clinic journey and obtain insurance wording for ongoing conditions. Arrange how the pension reaches the account used for local bills, establish its tax treatment and retain any evidence needed in the paying country. Resolve work permission separately for any household member intending to work.

Before departure; allow time for origin-specific requirements

07Prepare originals, belongings and pet clearance

Prepare a document file for each traveller: passport and issued permission, employment or admission evidence, and birth or relationship records supporting the application. Keep originals accessible and obtain the certification or official English translation required by the institution. Match names across the file and resolve discrepancies before submitting.

Contact Barbados Veterinary Services at The Pine, St Michael, for the animal-import application and conditions for the species and origin. The ministry's directory lists an online animal application, but its linked form returned an error during this review. Obtain current submission instructions directly from the department.

For a US-origin example, USDA APHIS's US-to-Barbados guidance, updated August 2026, describes this sequence:

  1. Implant the required ISO microchip before rabies vaccination and use its number on supporting records.
  2. Obtain the Barbados import permit; the guidance gives six months' validity.
  3. Observe the thirty-five-day wait after a primary vaccination or expired/missed booster.
  4. Apply origin and recent-travel conditions. Dogs over six months need the specified heartworm testing; Category 2 history or sea arrival can trigger rabies-antibody testing.
  5. Arrange the examination and export health certificate within seven days of travel, followed by official government endorsement.
  6. Give at least three working days' arrival notice and arrange customs-broker clearance and veterinary handover.

This is a US-export example. Have the origin authority compare the issued import conditions with its export certificate, and agree carriage and timing with the airline before fixing the journey.

Give the carrier an inventory of belongings and obtain the customs category, required records and destination charges in writing. Identify restricted foods, plants and animal products separately. The ministry's plant-import application covers plants, plant products and regulated articles; obtain conditions before packing seeds or cuttings. Keep medicines, documents and first-appointment essentials outside a delayed shipment.

Before travel for the entry form; on arrival for admission and transport

08Complete entry formalities and reach the first address

Give the employer, host or accommodation the flight details and agree a meeting arrangement before departure. Save the full local address and contact number offline, together with passport and issued permission records. Keep documents needed for immigration and the first appointments accessible in hand luggage.

Grantley Adams International Airport's immigration guidance requires arriving visitors to provide the full address of their stay and a correctly completed immigration/customs form. It also identifies passport, return-ticket and nationality-specific visa requirements for visitors. Apply the conditions of your own issued status; a visitor checklist should not be treated as the complete paperwork for a work or residence move.

  1. Use the Immigration Department's current entry instructions for the applicable form and permission.
  2. Present the passport, visa or approval records requested for admission.
  3. Retain the admission endorsement and any directions about follow-up formalities.
  4. Collect baggage and complete the declarations and clearance applicable to the goods and animals.
  5. Meet the agreed transport provider and confirm the destination and full charge.
  6. Notify the employer or sponsor of arrival and arrange the remaining appointments.

For an airport taxi, the airport's ground-transportation guidance identifies authorised vehicles by a yellow sticker and directs passengers to obtain a trip form from the dispatcher. Confirm luggage and vehicle requirements before departure from the airport. Its taxi advisory says excess luggage requiring a larger van can change the tariff; obtain the assessment for the actual party rather than treating an ordinary-car price as universal.

Use the first stay to complete appointments and inspect longer-term homes. Keep the admission evidence separate from appointment confirmations and submitted applications. An employer's arrangement, a family visa decision and a child's school admission may each need additional action after the flight.

After the immigration status is issued; before services needing the records

09Obtain the applicable identity and taxpayer records

Use the Electoral and Boundaries Commission's Barbados ID registration guidelines to identify the evidence for your status. The list includes qualifying work, student, immigrant and Special Entry documents, and the twelve-month Welcome Stamp. It describes status valid for more than six months, with at least one month remaining on finite permissions; a qualifying passport endorsement can be accepted.

  1. Bring the original legible records or certified copies required to establish identity and immigration status.
  2. Include the relevant marriage, name-change or other legal records when names differ.
  3. Arrange the stated certification and English translation for overseas documents.
  4. Complete registration, photograph and signature requirements as directed.
  5. Retain the Certificate of Registration and follow its collection instructions.

For a non-Barbadian child, the guidelines require immigration-status evidence alongside the applicable parent or guardian records. Arrange the adult registration prerequisite before the child's application. Ask the Commission how the requirements apply to the actual family rather than using one person's documents for the entire household.

Tax identification uses a separate service. The Revenue Authority's TAMIS registration guidance describes a thirteen-digit TIN and requests accessible email, financial-account details and valid identification. Establish the requirement for the income and immigration category, then use TAMIS to create and activate the user account.

  1. Activate the account through the email link and log in.
  2. Complete the security configuration and select Register New Taxpayer.
  3. Choose the individual registration type applicable to the application.
  4. Enter accurate commencement and personal details, then submit.
  5. Save the issued TIN or the REG case reference and follow any review request.

A REG reference means a Revenue Authority officer must assess the application before issuing the TIN. A user login or case reference is therefore not the finished taxpayer record. Give the employer or bank the issued information it requests, and retain payroll, withholding and return evidence separately from the identity card.

After obtaining the required status and address evidence

10Open the account with the records for your status

Arrange a branch appointment and describe the salary, rent and overseas transfers the account will handle. Republic Bank Barbados's compliance checklist separates identification, address and income evidence. It accepts a passport for identity and lists address options including a recent utility bill, rental agreement, another bank statement or official correspondence. If bills are in another person's name, the bank provides an authorisation letter for that person to complete.

  1. Choose the account with the bank and obtain its charges and opening requirements.
  2. Prepare the valid identity, address and income records.
  3. For a non-national or non-resident application, supply the additional foreign banking reference or recent statement and permanent foreign-address evidence requested.
  4. Present the applicable work permission or other status records, including the student documents when relevant.
  5. Complete the bank's review and activate the approved payment facilities.
  6. Test a small transfer and retain the reference before arranging regular rent payments.

The published list is not a guarantee that every status is accepted for every product; additional records can be requested. For Welcome Stamp or retirement circumstances, describe the actual permission and source of funds so the bank can identify its applicable account and evidence requirements.

For a joint account, discuss each person's banking residence classification. Republic Bank's terms state that a resident and non-resident cannot hold a joint account without written Central Bank consent. Do not infer the bank's classification solely from sharing an address or travelling as a couple.

Confirm the account details with the employer, landlord and service providers. Agree how rent receipts are issued and identify the transfer currency and beneficiary before sending funds. Ask the bank to establish the procedure and supporting records for overseas payments; keep that arrangement separate from the local debit-card or bill-payment setup.

After testing the location; before paying or moving goods

11Inspect the property and agree the complete rental terms

Compare the actual property and contract rather than treating a short-stay holiday quote as a residential rent. Ask for the currency, rental period, furnishings, included utilities and separately billed common charges. Confirm who owns or is authorised to let the home, and obtain the proposed agreement before handing over the initial payment.

  1. Inspect access, locks, water, sockets, ventilation and included appliances.
  2. Record the furniture and condition with dated photographs.
  3. Agree the occupants, term, payment dates and receipt method.
  4. Identify every proposed deposit or advance, its purpose and the written return conditions.
  5. Allocate maintenance, utilities, common charges and any internet installation permission.
  6. Read notice, renewal and early-departure terms in a language you understand.
  7. Record keys, meter readings, outstanding balances and the handover date.

For electricity, Barbados Light & Power's landlord guidance recommends putting the service in the tenant's name and provides a tenant-advice process. Have the owner identify when responsibility changes and give you the required advice form or letter. When moving out, coordinate the closing or transfer rather than leaving responsibility attached to an old occupant.

Write the water-billing arrangement into the agreement as well. Ask whether the account remains with the owner, whether readings cover the whole property and how your share is calculated. Retain the tenancy, payment receipts and service confirmations together. Resolve an unclear initial charge with the landlord or a qualified local adviser before paying; this guide does not invent a universal number of months' deposit for all Barbados rentals.

Before departure for cover; after arrival for local care

12Arrange the care pathway and insurance for your residence status

Begin with the household's actual treatment needs and a local clinician who can provide ongoing care or a referral. Bring a medical summary, current prescriptions and relevant test results. Identify how to obtain regular medicines and how the insurer handles consultations, planned treatment and emergencies before relying on a new policy.

Queen Elizabeth Hospital's eligibility guidance describes free hospital treatment for Barbados citizens and permanent residents. Other patients may be charged; the hospital assesses residential status. Paying taxes or holding an identity card does not by itself establish free-treatment entitlement. Obtain the payment or insurance arrangements for your particular permission.

The enhanced regional movement guidance provides qualifying movers with primary healthcare and education on the receiving country's national basis. Establish that entitlement with the provider; it should not be confused with unlimited free specialist hospital treatment.

  1. Identify a clinician or service offering the care needed near the home.
  2. Give the provider the medical history and medicine information.
  3. Ask the insurer about that provider, required authorisation and direct billing or reimbursement.
  4. Arrange the referral and appointment for specialist care.
  5. Retain registration, treatment and payment records for follow-up and claims.

For QEH outpatient care, the hospital's clinic instructions provide a referral-based appointment request. New patients use the request form, then Medical Records contacts them with the date and time subject to availability. The appointment guidance asks permanent residents to present their status evidence and identifies previous appointment or hospital cards for returning patients. A request submitted online is not the scheduled appointment.

For a patient outside those categories, contact the hospital's patient help desk to establish the appropriate registration and financial process before planned care. Keep the insurer's confirmation and accessible funds for any costs paid first and reclaimed later. Review coverage for existing conditions, ongoing treatment and care outside Barbados; a general travel policy may have a different scope from the household's intended stay.

After agreeing the address and responsibility dates

13Transfer the utilities and arrange phone, internet and transport

For electricity, use Barbados Light & Power's application requirements and its moving-in service to transfer responsibility for the actual address. The provider requests government-issued identification and the applicable service charge and deposit. Obtain the assessment for your status; its tenant guidance and general deposit wording are not identical, so establish the deposit requirement directly rather than assuming every newcomer receives an exemption.

  1. Get the owner's tenant advice and the start-of-responsibility date.
  2. Identify the existing meter and service, then submit the connection or transfer request.
  3. Provide identification and pay the assessed charge and security requirement.
  4. Save the activation confirmation and check the opening reading or balance.
  5. Set up access to My BLPC Account for bills and usage.
BLPC published charges reviewed 13 October 2026; Barbados dollars, including VAT
Service categoryBelow 200 ampsAbove 200 amps
New serviceBDS$58.75BDS$235.00
Reconnection or transferBDS$23.50BDS$47.00

These figures come from the current customer-charge table and exclude any separately assessed deposit or installation work. A transfer into an existing rental is different from creating a new supply.

For water, confirm the existing account arrangement with the owner. The Barbados Water Authority's FAQ describes a new-service application requiring identity and ownership evidence or the landowner's written permission, plus the stated property records. That installation procedure should not be assumed to be the same as paying an existing rented home's bill.

Compare Flow Barbados and Digicel Barbados services for the exact address. Ask for confirmed coverage, installation date, equipment, minimum term and the full first invoice. For a mobile line, obtain the provider's current foreign-customer registration instructions and test reception at home and work. The Flow billing guidance explains that a new service can have a partial-month charge before the first billing period; reconcile that charge with the activation date.

Use the Transport Board route identified during the home search to test the real outward and return journey. Its current passenger FAQ ties fare concessions to specific age, student and identification conditions. Age alone does not establish every senior visitor's entitlement. Confirm the applicable evidence and keep the normal fare available for journeys that do not qualify.

After essential permissions and household services are operating

14Check the first month's records and build a regular routine

Review issued decisions and activated services together. A submitted form, an appointment and an issued document represent different stages. Check the household's actual records rather than assuming the principal applicant's approval completes every dependant's education, identity or service task.

  1. Review permission dates and follow-up requirements for each person.
  2. Confirm that the employer and bank hold the correct issued records and contact details.
  3. Match rent receipts, meter records and utility bills to the correct address and period.
  4. Confirm school placement, transport and ongoing care appointments.
  5. Test a normal week's work, school, shopping and clinic journeys.
  6. Calendar renewals, outstanding applications and who handles each one.

Use real expenditure to revise the budget, separating arrival purchases from recurring bills. Save building-maintenance contacts and the instructions for equipment you operate. Agree how urgent faults are reported and where you can retrieve documents while internet or phone service is unavailable.

Find a regular activity through the school, workplace or a local organiser and verify the venue and registration directly. Choose participation that fits the household's location and timetable: a St John school journey and a Bridgetown workplace create different weekly arrangements. Keep useful contacts and confirmations together so later renewals or a move to another home can build on the first month's records.
