Moving & Living - Cameroon - Complete Guide

A practical Cameroon relocation journey: current visas and work approvals, NIU and residence cards, schools, rent, banking, healthcare, electricity, water and transport.

Cameroon offers very different daily settings: the working port city of Douala, hillside Yaoundé, and towns whose practical services and security conditions need a closer look. A move involves several separate files: entry permission, permission to work, tax registration and a foreigner’s identity card. This guide puts those tasks in an order you can follow, then connects them to school places, a workable home, healthcare and everyday payments.

Follow your moving journey

Start at step 1, or jump to the task you are working on.

Before departure

01Choose a base around work, school and reliable access

Start with the address you must reach most often. A Douala posting and a Yaoundé posting are different household decisions; choosing a house first can leave you crossing the city twice each day. In Douala, compare Bonapriso, Bonanjo, Akwa and a location near the actual job. In Yaoundé, include Bastos, the city centre and the neighbourhood serving your chosen school or office. These are viewing areas, not promises about rents, safety or uninterrupted services.

BasePractical anchorTest before choosing
DoualaEmployer address; a school such as Dominique Savio in KoumassiSchool-run traffic, approach road, drainage and a working water supply
YaoundéGovernment or institutional workplace; your chosen school or facultyHillside access, stairs, the return journey and mobile reception inside the home
Another townA confirmed posting, programme or family addressNearest usable hospital, administrative office and route to the airport

Make a simple location sheet for each candidate: map pin, road or landmark, nearest junction, arrondissement, landlord contact and workplace travel time. Ask someone to try the journey at your real start and finish times. A journey measured on an empty Sunday road is a poor school-run estimate.

Apply the current FCDO regional advice to the exact town and route. At review, its restrictions cover the North-West, most of the South-West and specified northern and border areas; Limbé has a separate all-but-essential classification. These are British government travel assessments, not an immigration eligibility list. Resolve insurance coverage and employer arrangements for any restricted itinerary before accepting it. Do not select Buea or Bamenda solely because English is useful there.

Before booking non-refundable travel

02Apply for entry permission that matches the move

Write your purpose plainly: taking a named job, studying on an accepted programme, accompanying family, or making a short preparatory visit. Submit that purpose and your nationality to the competent Cameroonian mission. A short visit to view homes does not establish permission to settle or start a job. Keep the intended work arrangement consistent across the application, employer letter and accommodation booking.

  1. Use the official e-Visa service reached through MINREX’s instructions. Create an account and open the new visa application.
  2. Prepare separate readable scans, including your passport and the documents requested for your purpose. Enter dates and personal names exactly as printed on the passport.
  3. Upload the files, review the complete application and finalise payment. MINREX identifies Visa and Mastercard among payment methods. Save the reference and receipt; the account dashboard can provide the receipt if email delivery fails.
  4. Follow the competent mission’s instructions: some applicants receive a QR-coded authorisation; others attend consular biometric enrolment. Keep the approval available offline and follow the stated visa-affixing procedure.

MINREX publishes ordinary and express processing targets, but a target is not approval for an incomplete file. Allow time to answer the mission’s questions rather than organising a move around the fastest advertised turnaround.

The FCDO entry page, specifically for British-citizen passports, requires six months’ passport validity after arrival and an advance visa application. Its land-and-sea guidance requires a physical visa obtained beforehand; airport visa affixing following approval must not be confused with arriving without an application. Other nationalities should obtain their own mission’s answer, including any exemption or reciprocity arrangement.

Before departure; complete approvals before work begins

03Secure the work contract or business arrangement before starting

A relocation offer should identify the employing entity, work location, gross salary, payment currency and who pays immigration, travel and medical costs. Ask for those items in the contract or assignment letter. If the employer promises accommodation, get its duration and what happens when employment ends; a temporary company room and a year’s family lease are different benefits.

For employees, Article 27 of the Labour Code requires the labour minister’s approval of a foreign national’s employment contract before performance begins. The employer is responsible for the application. Ask HR for the filed reference, the approved contract and the authorised start date. The word visa in this labour procedure refers to contract endorsement: it does not mean that an entry e-Visa supplies work permission. Use MINTSS for the current employer file rather than treating a recruiter’s checklist as the governing procedure.

Ask payroll to explain net pay, income-tax deductions and CNPS enrolment. Under the CNPS registration text, the employer submits a new worker’s registration within the eight days following the month of hiring, with the provisions for workers already registered also relevant. Record your existing number if you have one and request evidence that the employer used it correctly.

For a business, take a written description of the activity, ownership, location and intended staff to the business formalities centre and APME. Establish the legal entity, RCCM registration, tax file and any activity-specific licence in the appropriate order. Business incorporation and permission for you to live and work are separate files. The guide does not quote old creation charges as current fees.

For remote employment, send the actual arrangement to the mission and labour authority: foreign employer, duties performed physically in Cameroon and intended duration. No dedicated digital-nomad route was verified in the reviewed official material. Do not turn a foreign invoice or online salary into an assumed immigration category.

Before departure; revise after the first month

04Build the cash-flow plan and identify your tax category

Keep the working budget in XAF, the Central African CFA franc used in Cameroon and commonly written FCFA. Separate money that is spent from money tied up temporarily: a refundable rental deposit or bank opening balance still reduces the cash available for groceries. Record school charges in their published currency; a USD school invoice needs its own exchange and transfer-cost line.

Add initial flights, temporary accommodation, certified copies, freight, insurance, school enrolment, advance rent, utility work and furniture using written quotes. For recurring costs, give rent, water, electricity, phone, transport, groceries, school, healthcare and tax separate rows. No reliable current national household-price figure was established; your address and school choice would make one misleading anyway.

DGI’s income-tax explanation describes fiscal domicile through home or principal stay, professional activity and economic interests, with treaty qualifications. Residents may need to report worldwide income. Take employment, pension, investment and foreign-tax records to the accountant, including accommodation or other benefits supplied by an employer.

The 2026 Code, Article 74 bis sets annual non-professional return deadlines by category: 31 July for the specified public/parapublic group, 30 September for employees of private taxpayers under the named large, medium and specialised tax units, and 31 October for other individuals. Have DGI confirm your category and first relevant income year; the older explainer’s blanket June deadline is not the current schedule.

Before the family moves; optional if no student is moving

05Arrange the school place or a university intake

Choose the educational system before narrowing the house search. A child transferring into a French programme needs a different admissions conversation from one continuing an English-medium international programme. Send age, current year, curriculum, languages, learning-support needs and proposed arrival date together so the school can assess the correct class.

Apply directly to the school

American International School of Yaounde accepts applications throughout the year subject to space. Its sequence is inquiry, campus or virtual meeting, online application, any requested interview, decision and enrolment. Prepare two years of reports, student and parent passports, birth certificate, immunisation records and a photograph. Ask about support and a mid-year transition before withdrawing from the existing school.

For Lycée français Dominique Savio in Douala, the published 2026/27 non-French-system application window ran from 16 March to 19 June 2026 and has closed. Its listed test dates have also passed. Contact admissions about an available later intake or the next campaign; do not send a late file expecting the closed process to reopen. Placement from an approved French-system school still depends on available places. Its 30,000 XAF test charge applies after approval of the relevant test file.

Compare the whole invoice

The 2026/27 Savio schedule lists 3,893,010 XAF annual nursery/primary tuition for its third-country foreign category. First-enrolment charges distinguish the general 300,000 XAF charge from 500,000 XAF for pupils outside the French system. Ask which classification applies to your child. At AISOY, the 2026/27 main table lists USD 23,710 annual kindergarten–grade 5 tuition, USD 650 application and USD 10,000 new-student capital levy; its optional annual bus is USD 2,000. These are named-school prices, not public-school costs. Obtain the arrival-date invoice, payment currency and refund conditions.

University of Yaoundé I pre-registration for 2026/27 ran from 10 August to 25 September, also closed at review. Its process combines online pre-registration, a 10,000 XAF payment and physical submission at the chosen faculty, with qualifying BAC/GCE or equivalence requirements. Ask the faculty about your foreign qualification and next intake before paying or travelling.

Before departure; optional for pension-funded households

06Test whether a non-working move is viable

No dedicated retirement visa was verified in the official services reviewed for this guide. Treat retirement as a household funding situation and establish a real legal basis for the intended stay with the competent mission. A pension payment, property purchase or family invitation should not be treated as its own residence entitlement. Describe the intended duration, household members and whether any paid activity will continue.

Prepare a concise pension file: award letters, payment frequency, currency, recent bank evidence and the issuing institution’s contact. Ask the payer whether overseas residence changes payment, tax withholding, proof-of-life requirements or the account it can pay. Keep enough access to the original account to resolve a delayed payment without an urgent return flight.

Obtain health-cover quotations for your age and existing conditions before committing to accommodation. Request written answers on renewal beyond the first year, treatment limits, prescribed medicines and evacuation destinations. Compare the annual insurance cost and the amount you would have to pay immediately at a clinic. An inexpensive premium is not a useful budget if the required treatment is excluded.

During viewings, test the tasks you will perform each week: getting from the gate to a vehicle, shopping, attending appointments and managing stairs after rain. Ask how the household would function during a water or electricity interruption. Choose a home that works with the assistance you actually have, rather than planning around relatives who may be away.

Discuss pension income and any foreign rental or investment income with a Cameroonian tax adviser. Keep the pension authority’s residency correspondence and tax documents in the same file as the immigration decision. Revisit the plan when either spouse’s residence or medical circumstances changes; one person’s permission and insurance terms do not automatically describe the other’s position.

Before departure; before shipping or booking an animal

07Prepare a household document file, freight and pets

Build separate folders for immigration, employer, school, tax, banking and housing. Carry the passport and entry approval yourself. Keep civil-status records, qualifications, employment documents and children’s reports available as originals plus readable copies. Ask the receiving institution which documents need certification, translation or consular treatment before paying for a batch of identical copies.

For shipped belongings, start with an inventory by carton and a record of ownership and use. Obtain door-to-door quotes showing customs clearance, storage, port charges and delivery to the actual house. A quote ending at Douala port does not include the entire move to Yaoundé.

The customs-hosted relocation rules describe conditional relief for used household effects accompanying a qualifying change of residence, including a departure-authority certificate, dated inventory, declaration of at least six months’ ownership and consular formalities. The published text excludes vehicles from that household-effects relief and uses historical regional terminology. Ask Cameroon Customs or your licensed broker to confirm the current application to your status and shipment before dispatch. Do not label a new appliance or car automatically duty-free because it is travelling with furniture.

For pets, write to MINEPIA with species, breed, age, origin, travel date, carrier and owner details. The official import-authorisation page covers pets together with livestock and commercial establishment conditions; it does not clearly separate the personal household-pet checklist. Obtain that distinction and the current animal-health conditions in writing rather than submitting business licences that do not fit your move.

MINEPIA’s separate veterinary health-certificate procedure refers to animal declaration, a vaccination booklet and inspection-tax receipt. That service is not a substitute for permission to import. Have your departure-country official veterinarian and airline work from the confirmed Cameroon instructions, then retain the permission and original health records with the animal.

On arrival and during the first few days

08Complete arrival checks and establish a usable first address

Arrange the first transfer using the accommodation or employer contact. Give the driver your arrival details and agree on the meeting point and payment before departure. Keep the address, contact number, approval, insurance assistance number and passport details accessible without mobile data. Start with accommodation that gives you a named person to resolve a late arrival.

  1. Present the documents required for your approved entry route and keep the passport available for visa affixing and inspection.
  2. Check the entry stamp and authorised stay before leaving the border desk. The British-passport entry guidance specifically reminds travellers to obtain a stamp. Keep a scan once safely settled.
  3. Carry the required yellow-fever documentation. The CDC country page identifies the entry requirement for arrivals aged one year and older; obtain clinical advice for infants, contraindications and your vaccination timetable.
  4. Declare goods requiring declaration and retain any customs paperwork with the inventory, rather than discarding it with the baggage tags.
  5. Confirm your accommodation’s actual street location, nearest junction and contact. Request a receipt or booking record that identifies the property.

Spend the first days making the next appointments possible: obtain a phone connection, locate a bank branch, find the relevant police or identification office and establish how you will travel to each. Carry small usable cash for immediate purchases while keeping the main funds accessible through more than one method.

Prepare a clear plan de localisation, a location sketch showing the home, junctions and nearby landmarks. Keep its address consistent with the landlord’s documents. It is useful when a bank or tax service needs to locate you; a map screenshot alone may not satisfy the particular office’s requested format.

After arrival; after obtaining address and purpose-of-stay evidence

09Coordinate your NIU, tax certificate and residence card

The address, bank and tax documents can create dependencies. Start by presenting the intended sequence to the tax centre and bank, including your passport, visa and accommodation evidence. Ask which document they accept at this stage and what must be replaced when the residence card is issued. Do not invent a card number to force an online form through.

DGI’s registration procedure distinguishes professional and non-professional individuals and resident and non-resident identity evidence. Taxable persons register within 15 working days of starting activity. Use its linked registration service and save the NIU attestation and assigned tax centre. Its document rules include identity, location and banking evidence; ask the centre to resolve the first-card/bank sequence for your actual classification. Avoid a second NIU if one already exists.

A tax registration attestation and an attestation de conformité fiscale serve different purposes. Use the DGI fiscal-document service to obtain the applicable compliance certificate once the centre has established your file and obligations.

Under Decree 2025/059, Articles 21–26, the first carte de séjour file includes a certified passport copy made less than three months earlier with long-stay visa, domicile certificate from the competent mayor or police commissioner, special criminal-record extract, valid tax-compliance certificate and evidence justifying the stay. Complete online pre-enrolment and stamp payment, then physical enrolment at the identification post. Ask the post how to obtain the special extract and which proofs fit your purpose.

Keep the provisional identity document issued after enrolment. The decree’s 48-hour issuance period starts after validation, not after you first begin preparing papers. The card is valid for two years and renewable twice; prepare renewal while the existing card still has at least one month remaining. A carte de résident is a separate document. The 2025 police guide explains the new process, but its citizen CNI tutorial and fee must not be applied to a foreign-card application.

After the bank has confirmed acceptable identity and address evidence

10Open the appropriate account and activate everyday payments

Ask for the account you actually need: receiving payroll, saving XAF, paying rent, or receiving documented foreign transfers. A savings product’s opening deposit does not describe the conditions for a salary account, foreign-currency account or a bank card. Obtain the fee sheet and ask about incoming transfer charges, account maintenance, cash withdrawal and the information needed for your employer’s payroll file.

As a specific starting point, Afriland First Bank’s savings FAQ lists a passport or CNI copy, two photographs, a location plan, an ENEO or CAMWATER bill, NIU and minimum 25,000 FCFA deposit. Take the passport and current stay evidence and have the branch confirm acceptance for your nationality and residency stage. If the bill is in the landlord’s name, explain that before visiting and request the branch’s accepted supporting documents.

  1. Ask the chosen branch for its written checklist and current product charges.
  2. Bring consistent names, identity, NIU and address records; resolve spelling differences before opening.
  3. Request your account details and RIB for payroll and any tax file that requires it.
  4. Make a small test transfer and withdrawal, then retain the receipt and confirm the net amount received.

For a mobile wallet, Orange Money Cameroon’s 2026 terms recognise a valid passport among identity documents and require an active mobile access number in the applicant’s name, consent and the provider’s customer-identification checks. Use an authorised outlet and your own identity. Confirm transfer and cash-out costs before using a wallet for a large rent payment.

Keep the payment reference and the landlord’s written acknowledgement for rent. With international transfers, obtain the bank’s required evidence of salary, pension or sale proceeds beforehand; splitting transfers to avoid a question does not establish a lawful source of funds. Budget the total transfer cost, not just the sender’s advertised commission.

After arrival; before paying a large advance

11Inspect the home and negotiate a written rental file

Return to the shortlist with the actual commute and school decision. View the exact unit rather than paying against photographs of a similar apartment. Take a checklist through the home: locks, taps, drainage, sockets, windows, damp, cooking arrangements and the access route. Test mobile reception where the desk or bedroom will be. Ask who repairs each fault and write promised work into the handover agreement.

In a French-language rental file, identify the bail (lease), loyer (rent), avance (prepaid rent), caution (which needs an exact contractual definition), charges and état des lieux (condition record). Have the contract state whether money called caution is refundable security, a guarantee or another payment. Do not assume every landlord uses the word identically.

  1. Identify the owner and verify the agent’s authority to sign and receive money.
  2. List rent, the period covered by any advance, deposit, agency charge and each recurring charge separately.
  3. Set the term, notice, renewal, repairs, deposit-return conditions and the approved household or work use in writing.
  4. Agree which party completes any tax registration of the lease; ask the local DGI centre what your particular agreement requires.
  5. Sign the inventory and condition report together, photograph the meters and defects, then obtain dated receipts matching every payment.

Hypothetical cash-flow example: if a negotiated home costs 250,000 XAF monthly and the contract asks for six months’ advance plus a separate one-month refundable deposit, 1,750,000 XAF is tied up before other charges. This is arithmetic, not an observed Douala or Yaoundé asking rent, and neither the advance nor deposit is stated as a legal national rule.

Ask for the last utility bills and account status before handover. Record whether you have an individual meter or a shared allocation and how the latter is calculated. An attractive rental price is incomplete if the household must separately fund water storage, backup power or previously undisclosed shared charges.

Before departure; establish local contacts in the first week

12Choose healthcare contacts and cover the actual household

Start from the treatment your household may need. Ask an insurer for written confirmation of Cameroon cover, existing conditions, medicines, maternity if relevant, outpatient care and evacuation. Give it your exact city and any regional travel; an employer’s policy name alone does not tell you whether a spouse or child is included. Save the assistance number and pre-authorisation instructions.

The Health Ministry’s 29 June 2026 update describes a phased universal-health-coverage rollout, initially prioritising vulnerable groups, with legal consolidation still under preparation. Do not equate arrival, CNPS payroll enrolment or a residence card with automatic free comprehensive healthcare. Ask the local provider whether a specific programme accepts your household and what services it actually pays for.

For a concrete laboratory and vaccination contact, the Centre Pasteur’s Ngousso centre identifies sampling, results collection and vaccination, with published Monday–Friday hours of 07:00–14:00. It is opposite the Yaoundé-Ngousso gynae-obstetric and paediatric hospital; it is not a general emergency department. For relevant specialist care, CHRACERH publishes its Ngousso location and gynae-obstetric emergency service. Ask the provider about the required consultation, referral and payment process.

  1. Identify a clinic near the house and a hospital able to handle your household’s likely emergencies.
  2. Ask which payment methods it accepts and whether your insurer has a direct-billing agreement there.
  3. Bring a concise medical summary, prescription names and doses, allergies and vaccination records; arrange a readable French version where useful.
  4. Set aside immediately accessible treatment funds and learn the insurer’s reimbursement process.

US government country guidance notes upfront payment and uneven facility capacity, particularly outside major cities. It also identifies polio documentation for stays exceeding four weeks. Use the CDC country guidance with a qualified travel-health clinician for vaccination and malaria-prevention planning, including the timing of certificates for travel. These are individual clinical and itinerary decisions; the guide does not prescribe a medicine.

After selecting the home; test connectivity before committing

13Connect utilities, choose data and plan regular journeys

In 2026 the electricity business uses SOCADEL, while many customer pages still carry Eneo wording. The operator’s own current site publishes SOCADEL releases and links its household services. Establish whether your home already has a functioning connection, needs an account change or needs physical connection work. Those are different jobs.

Take the meter number, recent bill, lease and owner contact to the provider and request the applicable subscription procedure. Get the quote and a traceable job reference before paying for work. For prepaid power, ask the provider to demonstrate purchasing and entering a token for your meter. For a shared meter, record the allocation in the lease and retain readings; topping up a neighbour’s account does not establish your own service.

For water, start with CAMWATER’s current website and the agency serving your address. Ask which identity, property and owner-authorisation papers apply to your home and whether the work is an account matter or a new branch connection. Keep the acknowledgement and receipts. The older online appointment and complaints addresses returned missing-page responses during review, so they are not used here. Obtain the current subscription channel and a job reference directly from the agency before paying for installation.

Visit an operator outlet with your passport and current stay evidence to establish which documents it accepts for SIM registration. Test the service inside the home before committing to a router. MTN’s displayed mobile table includes 3 GB for 4,000 XAF over 30 days. Its home offers include NoLimit Explore at 14,900 XAF for 30 days, advertised up to 4 Mbps; a free-box promotion requires three months paid at activation. Ask about signal, activation costs and the conditions applying to your particular offer.

For rail journeys, Camrail describes its Douala–Yaoundé passenger express and directs users to MyCamrail. Choose travel date, stations, passengers and class to obtain the actual available service and price. Keep the ticket reference and identify the station transfer separately. For taxis, agree the fare and whether the trip is shared or exclusive before boarding; the guide supplies no unverified universal city fare.

During the first month; review at each renewal

14Complete the first-month file and build a repeatable routine

Use the first month to replace estimates with evidence. Record your actual school-run and work travel costs, market purchases, electricity and water payments, mobile use and any medical spending. Separate a furniture purchase from a recurring living cost. Compare the resulting worksheet with the arrival budget before taking on an additional annual commitment.

Find community through the places you already use: parents’ activities at the school, colleagues, a language class, a sports club or your faith community. Ask for the actual meeting location and next date rather than relying on a group name alone. In a bilingual country, use the language that helps with the documents and services in your own town; developing practical French can be useful for a Yaoundé administrative appointment even if the household speaks English at home.

Build one modest weekly shopping routine before trying to optimise every purchase. Learn where to buy the same household items, compare unit quantities and keep receipts when available. At a market such as Mokolo, know the return route and carry only the money needed for that outing. The photograph below documents the market in 2018; it is not evidence of today’s stall prices or road conditions.

Finish with an outstanding-task list containing an owner, next action and date. A submitted card application, a promised repair and an accepted school place are different states of completion. Carry unresolved tasks forward explicitly, and update your address with the institutions that use it when you move again.
