Moving & Living - Colombia - Complete Guide

Move to Colombia step by step: choose a city, arrange the right visa and work, prepare documents and pets, register your cédula, establish banking, rent a home and organise health and daily services.

Colombia offers very different daily lives in Bogotá, Medellín, Cali and Cartagena. The practical move starts with the right city and immigration route, then depends on documents and local registrations before banking, housing and healthcare can work smoothly. This guide follows that sequence, using the actual visa, identity-card and service processes and explaining the local terms you will meet along the way.

Follow your moving journey

Start at step 1, or jump to the task you are working on.

Before choosing a permanent home

01Choose a city, then test the neighbourhood and commute

Compare the place where the household will actually work or study, rather than choosing Colombia from a single holiday experience. Bogotá's neighbourhoods, Medellín's valley and Cartagena's coastal setting produce different journeys, housing needs and daily costs. Start with the workplace or campus, then work outward to homes and services.

Starting pointAreas to investigateWhat to test in person
BogotáChapinero, Quinta Camacho, Usaquén or a location near the campusThe full peak-hour trip, road noise and building access
MedellínLaureles–Estadio or El PobladoThe walk to the actual station or bus, slopes and evening activity
CaliSan Antonio or a location close to the employerTransport to work and the home's ventilation
CartagenaA verified property in the area that fits the job and householdCooling costs, visitor activity and the everyday shopping journey

The city authority's Chapinero introduction, Colombia Travel's Medellín information and destination directory help orient the shortlist. They do not establish an available apartment or the condition of a particular block.

  1. Book a short initial stay near the likely work or school area.
  2. Travel the proposed commute at the times you will use it, including the walk at each end.
  3. Visit shortlisted buildings and ask about administration charges, internet installation, noise and supplied equipment.
  4. Choose the permanent home only after its paperwork and household arrangements have been assessed.

In an address, calle, carrera, diagonal and transversal are part of the location, not interchangeable labels. Keep the complete address when arranging a viewing or delivery.

Before committing to work or a long-term stay

02Choose the immigration route for the actual purpose of the move

Cancillería's visa classes distinguish Visitor (V), Migrant (M) and Resident (R) permissions. A short-stay entry permission is not ordinary settlement permission, and a visa's validity can differ from the time or activities authorised in Colombia.

  1. Choose the route around the real activity: a Colombian employment contract, eligible foreign remote work, family circumstances, study or a qualifying pension.
  2. Read the specific route alongside its nationality, evidence and application-location conditions. Do not assume that a rule for a visa-exempt passport applies to every nationality.
  3. Plan the household separately. A beneficiary application requires the relationship and dependency evidence, and beneficiary status does not itself permit employment.
  4. Prepare the documents before completing the official online visa application. Use the appropriate authority for the place where you are legally present.

The V digital-nomad visa is limited to passports from countries or territories exempt from short-stay visas. It covers qualifying foreign remote work or the specified digital enterprise, can be granted for up to two years, and does not permit paid activity with a person or business domiciled in Colombia. Its requirements include foreign-work evidence, bank statements showing at least three current legal monthly minimum wages during the preceding three months, and the specified health cover. Qualifying short visits have their own limited entry arrangements; they are not a replacement for a permanent moving plan.

For Colombian employment, use the M worker instructions in step 3. For retirement, the pension route in step 6 has important restrictions of its own.

Before starting the activity

03Arrange the employment contract or business registration

For an employment-based move, the Colombian employer must participate in the visa evidence. The current M worker page calls for the signed contract-summary form, an employer motivation letter and its preceding four months of financial evidence, with the specified average-income requirement. Older combined lists can describe a different period; use the current route page.

  1. Agree the role, employer, location, salary and start date in writing. Ask payroll about deductions, social-security arrangements and the treatment of any relocation reimbursement.
  2. Coordinate the contract summary and employer documents with the actual visa application. Keep the job start conditional on the permission required to perform it.
  3. For a regulated profession, identify the responsible professional council and obtain the applicable permission or licence. A foreign degree and a work visa are not interchangeable with professional authorisation.
  4. Read the resulting visa's work scope. The M worker route is tied to the stated position, entity, profession or activity; discuss a change before beginning a different job.

Employers and other organisations have separate SIRE reporting obligations. Their report does not replace your own visa registration or identity-card application.

For an enterprise in Bogotá, the Chamber of Commerce's creation service and incorporation documents provide the actual registration starting points, including a sociedad por acciones simplificada (SAS). Decide the name, activity, registered address, ownership and legal representation, prepare the constitution documents, and establish the applicable commercial and tax registrations. Incorporation does not itself give a foreign owner permission to work. For an activity elsewhere, use the chamber responsible for that jurisdiction and address its premises and operating requirements.

Before signing contracts; reassess during the stay

04Budget in pesos and establish the household's tax position

Use Colombian pesos for recurring household payments and retain the actual currency of visa or overseas charges. Ask whether an advertised rental includes administración, utilities and furnishings. Calculate costs for the chosen property and household rather than assigning a national monthly figure to Bogotá, Medellín and the coast.

This table is a hypothetical monthly household budget. Rent, administration, purchases, utilities, communications and health cover are assumptions to replace with quotes. The transport row alone uses Bogotá's published 2026 fare, explained below.

ItemIllustrative COP per monthBasis
Rent2,200,000Assumed contract
Building administration250,000Assumption; confirm if already included
Food and household purchases950,000Assumption
Utilities350,000Assumption; depends on property and consumption
Internet and phone150,000Assumed services, not an advertised plan
Health cover and care reserve550,000Assumption dependent on status and policy
44 Bogotá transport journeys156,20044 × COP 3,550
Total4,606,200Calculated example, not a market average

TransMilenio's 2026 notice sets COP 3,550 for the specified unified Bogotá services from 14 January 2026. The 44-journey calculation does not price every possible transfer, airport trip or another city's network.

An illustrative initial reserve of COP 11,194,000 comprises assumed first rent 2,200,000, temporary lodging 1,200,000, flights 3,000,000, freight 3,500,000, setup purchases 1,000,000 and the general cédula charge 294,000. It excludes visa charges, applicable freight taxes, school costs and separately quoted translation and insurance costs. No cash security deposit is assumed for an ordinary urban residential tenancy. Do not count the first rental period twice.

The 26 March 2026 visa-fee resolution lists standard USD study/issue charges of 56/138 for V, 56/204 for M and 56/183 for R. These totals exclude applicable stamp tax and have nationality and category exceptions, as well as euro-denominated charges. Use the applicable assessment rather than assuming everyone pays the same amount.

Assess tax residency using DIAN's current income-tax guidance. Staying for more than 183 days in any consecutive 365-day period, counting entry and exit days, is an important test; a period crossing tax years has its specified second-year treatment. An overseas payer or a digital-nomad visa does not itself make income tax-free. Keep travel dates and income records, then establish the applicable return and payment obligations.

Before choosing the permanent home and departure date

05Arrange school placement or university admission

Start with the child's language, year level, curriculum and support needs, then compare the campus journey with the housing shortlist. School calendars and transfer arrangements can differ, and an enquiry is not an admission decision.

  1. Contact the chosen school's admissions team with the child's age, current grade, expected arrival and previous curriculum.
  2. Obtain the actual document list, evaluation process, costs and payment dates. Ask separately about transport, meals, equipment and learning support.
  3. Prepare previous school records and the required identity and immigration evidence. Keep the former school's contact available for references or sealed records.
  4. Arrange the evaluation and wait for the formal decision before paying for a home solely to serve that school.

Colegio Nueva Granada's own instructions distinguish rolling admissions for relocating international families from local transfers. Its grade-specific checklist includes three years of primary records or five years of sealed secondary transcripts, relevant recommendations, identity and visa evidence, vaccination records and specified household documents. Local transfers have an April–early June assessment period and are not accepted into Grade 12. Ask which category applies to the actual family; neither process promises a place.

For university, Universidad de los Andes' current undergraduate process lists January 2027 admission, with the next published cut on 19 October 2026 and final application closing on 7 December 2026. Programme capacity and additional assessments can alter what is available. Choose the appropriate route in its application service, including the applicable international examination or prior-study route, rather than assuming every foreign applicant must follow the same entrance test.

After admission, obtain the university's enrolment and immigration instructions. Admission, the visa or permission to study, tuition payment and course registration are separate steps. Budget for the programme's actual charges and housing.

Before applying and arranging a long-term home

06Document the qualifying pension and health-cover arrangement

The M pensioner route requires a qualifying lifetime pension of at least three current legal monthly minimum wages, with the prescribed certification, relevant criminal-record evidence, medical certificate and Colombian health-cover evidence. A savings balance or investment income is not automatically that pension.

  1. Obtain the pension provider's certification and prepare it according to the route's authentication and translation requirements.
  2. Arrange the required police and medical evidence against the actual residence history and document instructions.
  3. Obtain the specified health-cover documentation for the proposed period, retaining the policy's territorial cover and exclusions.
  4. Plan treatment access and prescription continuity in the city where you will actually live.

The visa may be granted for up to three years, does not permit work, and expressly restricts affiliation to Colombia's social-security system except under applicable bilateral or multilateral agreements. Do not plan ordinary EPS enrolment merely from possession of a pension visa. Its qualifying time toward a resident route is not automatic permanent residence; a later application must meet the conditions then applicable.

Compare the policy and the real clinic journey before selecting a home. Ask about specialist appointments, mobility in the building and support during an illness. Keep insurance renewal and visa dates together in the household calendar.

Before departure and shipping

07Prepare authenticated records, household freight and pets

Build the document set around the selected route. The general visa instructions address document freshness, apostille or legalisation, Spanish translations and exceptions such as readable bank statements. Obtain the requested police, civil and qualification records in time to use them, rather than translating every household paper without checking its purpose.

  1. Scan identity and supporting records clearly and keep originals available. The visa service specifies a recent white-background 3 × 4 cm JPG photo up to 300 KB and a total attachment allowance of 5 MB.
  2. Inventory freight and establish the customs treatment before shipping. DIAN's household-effects guide covers qualifying residents abroad who spent at least 24 months of the preceding three years outside Colombia.
  3. Coordinate the owner's arrival and goods: that guide specifies arrival within one month before or four months after the owner, with the general 15% ad valorem charge and other conditions. A household move is not universally duty-free.
  4. Price clearance, transport, storage and delivery separately. Ensure the carrier has the correct consignee and inventory.

For dogs and cats, follow ICA's entry procedure and its 9 October 2026 reminder. Request and pay for the inspection through SISPAP, then print the request and payment evidence. The origin authority's health certificate must be issued within ten calendar days before entry; the required parasite treatment is within the preceding 60 days. First rabies vaccination requires at least 21 days before boarding, and the minimum entry age is 15 weeks, with the listed vaccination and country-specific rules retained.

Take the animal and original records to ICA at the entry point for documentary and physical inspection and the final sanitary certificate. Different species require separate requests. Confirm airline acceptance and the carrier separately from sanitary permission.

After the travel and immigration plan is confirmed

08Organise entry, airport transport and the first week

Prepare the passport, applicable visa, accommodation address and evidence relevant to the intended entry. Visa issuance allows you to seek admission; it does not replace the border decision. Keep the entry record and authorised stay information so that later registration and tax-date calculations use the actual arrival.

  1. Use the current CheckMig instructions if preloading the journey information. The service page describes it as free and optional, with the 72-hours-to-one-hour window; older pages can use different wording.
  2. Access the official CheckMig service directly and retain the confirmation if used. It is not a visa application or a paid settlement document.
  3. Arrange transport with the accommodation provider or the airport's authorised service to the complete address. Have the contact and location available offline.
  4. Keep the first accommodation period long enough for appointments and property inspections. Confirm that the host can provide the address evidence needed for the next steps.

Medellín's José María Córdova airport is at Rionegro, so an airport arrival and a meeting in Medellín should not be scheduled as if they are at the same location. In Bogotá, work out the route from El Dorado to the actual district. Price the booked transfer separately from a normal urban public-transport journey.

In the first days, identify the closest migration service appointment location, bank branch and care provider relevant to the household. Do not spend the registration period travelling without a plan for the required application.

Promptly after entry or an in-country visa issue

09Register the visa, obtain the cédula and arrange tax registration

Use the current visa-registration instructions: where registration is required, the general period is fifteen calendar days after arrival for a visa obtained abroad, or after issue when obtained in Colombia. Some V activities are exempt. Confirm the trigger in the actual decision, especially for an electronic visa; do not assume receiving it creates an extra fifteen days after an existing deadline.

  1. Read the current cédula de extranjería process for your visa and age. Children aged 0–6 use the required visa registration without a cédula; those aged 7–17 follow the identity process with the responsible adult.
  2. Complete the Formulario Único de Trámites with the requested combined PDF of passport and visa.
  3. Book the CFSM appointment, bring the original valid passport and any family evidence, and complete fingerprints, photograph and payment.
  4. Retain the digital receipt and use the authority's collection service to check the physical document. The receipt's immigration use does not mean every bank accepts it as an account-opening document.

The 2026 general cédula fee is COP 294,000, with specified exceptions including USD 5 for a first issue to an Ecuadorian national. Visa registration and the charged identity document are different services. The June 2026 payment notice limits card payments to Visa and MasterCard, removing American Express and Diners Club.

Assess whether your activities require DIAN's Registro Único Tributario. Use its registration and update channels and required identity information. The self-service eligibility guide excludes foreigners from that particular ordinary online registration channel; arrange the appropriate DIAN service instead. A RUT is a tax registration, not proof of immigration permission. Keep existing registrations updated rather than creating duplicates.

After obtaining the bank's required documents

10Open the appropriate account and test local payments

Ask the bank about the actual product and your applicant category before assuming a passport or a cédula receipt is sufficient. Bancolombia's current savings-account page directs foreign applicants to in-person verification. Its foreign-applicant checklist varies the supporting evidence for workers, students and other circumstances.

  1. Take the requested original identity and status documents, second photographic identification and employment or study letter where applicable. Ask about additional address, income and tax-residency evidence.
  2. Choose the account plan after reading its management, withdrawal and transfer fees. A published account-opening channel is not a guarantee of approval.
  3. Establish the phone and authentication arrangements needed for the bank's application and online access.
  4. Make a small payment or transfer within your own arrangements and retain its confirmation before relying on the account for rent and salary.

Bancolombia's checklist says the contraseña for a cédula is not accepted for ordinary product opening. That is a bank policy distinction from the migration authority's digital receipt; ask what evidence the branch accepts in your case instead of assuming the two instructions are identical.

For payments, keep the recipient's identity and the exact account reference. PSE is a bank-linked online payment method used by many services; establish access through your own bank before planning to use it for a government charge. Retain a modest cash reserve for everyday purchases and compare the cost of overseas-card use and conversion with the actual local account plan.

After inspecting the home; before paying and moving in

11Read the residential lease, guarantees and administration charges

Read canon de arrendamiento as the rent and establish whether administración is included or separate. An agency may assess income, a codeudor or an insurance-backed application. Ask which evidence it accepts for a new foreign resident and whether the application cost is refundable; a guarantor demand is not the same as a universal legal requirement.

  1. Verify the property and the person authorised to rent it. Inspect the home, supplied items, building rules and actual bills before signing.
  2. Record the occupants, term, rent frequency, administration, utility responsibilities, repairs and notice arrangements.
  3. Read the urban residential tenancy law. Article 16 prohibits cash deposits or real security to guarantee the tenant's contractual obligations. Separate public-service guarantees under their own rules and hotel or tourist accommodation from an ordinary residential tenancy.
  4. Prepare a dated condition report with photographs, inventory, meter readings and keys. Obtain a signed copy and payment receipts.

Ask the administrator about moves, lift use, delivery access, pets and permitted changes. Compare the property's internet installation options before ordering a service. Do not use the historical Laureles photograph as evidence of a home being offered today.

If an agency proposes a charge called a deposit, ask what agreement and legal basis it applies to before paying. Identify the applicable contract rather than assuming every furnished or short-stay booking follows the same residential terms.

Before departure for cover; after arrival for service registration

12Choose cover that fits the visa and establish care access

Separate visa-required cover, eligible EPS affiliation and private clinical care. The health ministry's insurance services explain the national system, while the affiliation-document rules define acceptable identification for different circumstances. Possession of a passport or cédula alone does not establish every person's entitlement.

  1. For a worker, coordinate eligible affiliation and payroll arrangements with the employer. For independent activity, establish the applicable contribution and registration process rather than assuming an employer will handle it.
  2. For a pensioner or digital-nomad route, read the specific visa and policy conditions. Preserve the pension route's restriction on social-security affiliation, subject to its stated agreement exceptions.
  3. Use Mi Seguridad Social for supported eligible registration or updates, and retain confirmation of the household members and effective arrangements.
  4. Identify the actual local clinic or hospital and appointment channel, then confirm whether the policy or EPS arrangement covers the chosen provider and service.

In Bogotá, Fundación Santa Fe de Bogotá's appointment service is one verified clinical starting point. An available booking system does not make a consultation free or confirm that a particular insurer covers it. Ask about authorisations and payment before a planned appointment.

Bring treatment summaries and prescriptions, arrange ongoing medicine supply and check the policy's treatment of existing conditions, emergency care and repatriation. Update identity information when the applicable document changes. Keep care arrangements continuous during the period between arrival, registrations and the start of any eligible local affiliation.

After the home and required identity evidence are available

13Register the phone and set up bills and transport

Obtain a phone service against the operator's actual identity and activation process. For an imported handset, ask about model compatibility and registration rather than assuming inserting a Colombian SIM completes everything.

  1. Find the IMEI with *#06# and keep purchase or ownership evidence. Claro's registration instructions describe the Mi Claro route through Prepago or Postpago, Gestiona tu equipo and Registra tu equipo. If your identity cannot be handled in the application, use the operator's assistance channel.
  2. Order internet for the exact address, confirming installation, equipment, contract duration and any building permission.
  3. Record utility readings and account references at handover. EPM's property guidance provides a Valle de Aburrá starting point for checking service records; use the actual suppliers elsewhere.
  4. Read the bills, due dates and consumption. EPM's tariff explanation distinguishes consumption and the property's estrato treatment. Estrato is not the foreign resident's visa category or an individual income-tax rate.

In Bogotá, use the TransMilenio and zonal network around the real journey. In Medellín, read the 2026 Metro fare profiles and Cívica information: integrations 1–4 list COP 3,820 for Frecuente and COP 4,400 for al portador/eventual; the Eventual card costs COP 12,100. Other integrations and Cable Arví have separate prices. Establish the card and profile that apply to you rather than assuming every trip uses the lowest fare.

After arrival; review at the month's end

14Complete the first month and build an everyday support network

Use the first month to turn applications and contracts into working services. Compare the real commute and bills with the assumptions, then adjust the household routine around what you have established.

  • First days: record the authorised entry, calendar registration, establish the temporary address and arrange the required appointment.
  • First two weeks: complete the required immigration and identity steps, inspect permanent homes and follow up school or employment arrangements.
  • By the end of the month: reconcile rent, administration, utility and banking charges, test healthcare access and confirm the status of freight and remaining tax-registration tasks.
  • For the next months: calendar visa expiry and any permitted-absence conditions, school deadlines, insurance renewals and the applicable tax obligations.

For a practical community starting point in Bogotá, BibloRed's registration instructions explain free membership online or through a library, with specified foreign-resident identification. Ask about the services and programme at the branch near the actual home. For Spanish study, Uniandes' foreign-language course information is a verified starting point; confirm the current intake and enrolment eligibility rather than treating a university course as an unrestricted drop-in class.

Build a small list of contacts for the building, school, work, clinic and official applications. Learn the words that recur in those interactions: appointment, payment receipt, account number, repair and authorisation. The useful end-of-month result is concrete: the household knows its permission to stay and work, has completed the required registrations, and can pay, travel, study and obtain care using the arrangements it actually holds.
