Moving & Living - Equatorial Guinea - Complete Guide
Move to Equatorial Guinea in 14 practical steps: the 2026 capital transition, entry and work permission, residence, XAF banking, schools, housing, healthcare and everyday services.

Life on Bioko, around Malabo, differs from a routine in coastal Bata or the new inland capital, Ciudad de la Paz. An employer, school or clinic can determine which side of the country you need to live on. This journey explains how to choose that base, arrange the correct entry and employment permissions, complete residence paperwork and build a workable household routine.

Follow your moving journey
Start at step 1, or jump to the task you are working on.
01Choose the island or mainland base your routine needs
Start with an address rather than a general preference for the capital. Malabo is on Bioko; Bata is on the mainland coast in Río Muni. Ciudad de la Paz, in Djibloho, is inland. Moving between the island and mainland adds a separate transport journey: they are not connected by a road commute.
Ciudad de la Paz became the capital under the January 2026 decree, subsequently confirmed by Law 4/2026. The decree allowed a year for institutions to relocate. That transition does not establish that every ministry, employer or public service has already moved. Obtain the office address from the institution handling your case. Read the capital decree; April 2026 legislation.

| Base | Start here if | Resolve before renting |
|---|---|---|
| Malabo and Malabo II | Your employer or daily services are on Bioko | Actual work entrance, school journey and internet coverage at the property |
| Bata | Your work, university or family is on the mainland coast | Distance to the relevant campus, clinic and everyday shopping |
| Ciudad de la Paz / Oyala | Your appointment is in the new capital | Institution's relocation date, supplied housing and transport arrangements |
| Mongomo | Your programme or posting is based there | The specific UNGE campus or employer address, not a Malabo contact office |
Ask an employer for a marked map pin, accommodation photographs and the transport arrangements in the offer. For Malabo II, compare the actual journey with a central Malabo option rather than treating the whole urban area as one neighbourhood. Reserve an initial stay long enough to visit the workplace, see housing and complete appointments. Keep that booking changeable while permissions and arrival dates are still being settled.
02Match your entry application to the purpose of the move
Visitor entry, permission to live in the country and permission to work are separate decisions. Begin with the Equatorial Guinean consulate responsible for your nationality and application location. Give it your proposed activity, duration, employer or host, and accompanying family members. A business meeting and taking a paid job require different explanations.
The official online visa service is operated for immigration by VFS and is corroborated by UN Tourism. Its published FAQ allows applicants of all nationalities to apply; that does not mean every nationality must use it or every proposed activity fits a short visit. Official service announcement; Application FAQ.
- For an appropriate short visit, use the official application service, register an email address and select the purpose accurately.
- Prepare a passport valid for at least six months on arrival with a blank stamp page. Upload its cover and biography page, a light-background 4 × 6 photograph, confirmed return flight and accommodation evidence.
- For a private host, the FAQ specifies an invitation, house registration and the host's Equatorial Guinean identity document or, for a foreign host, passport.
- Submit separate applications for each traveller who needs a visa, including children. An approved parent does not cover a child's application.
- Print the approval and travel with the same passport used in the application. The stated usual processing window is 24–72 hours after payment, subject to complete information; contact the service if it exceeds five working days. It is not guaranteed.
For employment, obtain the consular work-visa instructions instead. The embassy in Spain lists passport, invitation, police, financial and medical-insurance evidence, with residence-document requirements for applicants who are neither Spanish nor Andorran. That is its jurisdictional checklist, not a universal worldwide application list. Read the embassy's visa categories.
03Put employment permission and the contract in place
A job offer should describe both the work and the move. Obtain a contract naming the employing entity, position, worksite, salary currency, payment schedule, housing, medical cover, transport and who pays permit and return-travel costs. If the employer supplies accommodation, request its address and the conditions for leaving it when the contract ends.
- Ask the employer's personnel team to identify the work-permit category and prepare the employer-side submission. The Labour Ministry's employment and orientation directorate explicitly handles work-permit grants, renewals and cancellation. Responsible work-permit directorate.
- Agree which original qualifications, employment records and identity documents you must provide. Have the receiving office specify translation and legalisation requirements before paying for them.
- Require a copy of the filed application, official payment evidence and the eventual authorisation. An invitation to enter is not a substitute for approved employment.
- Keep the residence process separate and coordinate the authorised start date with both decisions. Put renewal responsibility and notice dates in the employer's calendar and your own.
Law 6/2026 amended the 2021 labour law. The ministry's June 2026 list identifies that amendment, but its linked reform PDF did not provide a usable legal text during this review. A complete current foreign-worker checklist, permit tariff and any applicable occupational limits could not be independently confirmed. Obtain these from the directorate for the named job rather than using an older online quota or fee. Current ministry legislation listing; Enacted amendment.
Optional business route: use Hacienda's Ventanilla Única Empresarial to coordinate the notary, commercial register, tax identification and Treasury stages. Ask for the current company-type checklist, prepare the ownership and funding evidence it requests, and retain the registration records. Company registration does not by itself grant personal residence or work permission. The window's historical tariff examples should not be used after the 2026 fees-law rollout. Business registration window; 2026 fee implementation.
Working remotely for a foreign company also needs an answer about lawful activity. No dedicated remote-worker residence route was verified for this guide. Describe the actual work to the consulate and Labour Ministry before treating a visitor stay as a base for ongoing employment.
04Build an arrival budget and establish your tax treatment
Budget in Central African CFA francs, code XAF. BEAC's fixed parity is EUR 1 = XAF 655.957; bank charges still affect the amount available to spend. XAF is distinct from the West African CFA franc, XOF. As arithmetic, EUR 500 equals XAF 327,978.50 at parity before charges; it is not a cash-exchange quote. BEAC currency information.
| Item | Verified amount and scope | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Online visa | USD 50 visa + USD 25 service charge, excluding tax; reviewed 13 October 2026 | Per applicable applicant; verify the total on the payment screen |
| BANGE personal opening funds | XAF 20,000 minimum; tariff effective January 2026 | Opening balance, not automatically a non-refundable fee |
| BANGE Basic pack | XAF 2,300 monthly before VAT, January 2026 tariff | Compare included services and optional cards |
| GETESA TRINET | 5 Mbps at XAF 33,000 monthly; equipment excluded; October 2026 service listing | Subject to actual property coverage and contract quote |
| Rent, deposit and relocation | No verified national price | Use the specific property's terms and itemised supplier quotes |

These prices come from the official visa information, CNEF-published bank tariff and operator's service page. A hypothetical lease at XAF 300,000 monthly with one month's deposit would require XAF 600,000 for those two items alone. Neither that rent nor that deposit is a market average or a legal rule.
Add flights, temporary accommodation, document preparation, shipping, insurance, school charges and any employer-paid items to an initial-cost sheet. A separate monthly sheet should cover rent, food, utilities, transport, connectivity, healthcare and the bank package. This prevents a supplied apartment from hiding the cost of services you still pay yourself.
The General Tax Law 1/2024 replaced the 2004 legislation. The government's presentation describes a maximum salary-tax rate of 25%, corporate tax of 25%, and standard VAT of 15%, with a reduced 5% rate. These headline figures are not a personal tax calculation. New tax-law presentation. Ask payroll for your gross-to-net breakdown, withholding records and treatment of allowances. For foreign income, pension payments or a business, have Hacienda or a qualified adviser determine your own filing and residence position. Keep your existing country's departure and continuing filing obligations on the same calendar.
05Secure the actual school place or university admission
A school prospectus cannot replace a place offer. Begin with the child's age, present curriculum, language of instruction, reports and travel time from the proposed home. Ask how the receiving school assesses grade placement and whether support exists for a child entering Spanish-medium study.
In Malabo, Ewaiso Ipola publishes its own admissions sequence and school-office contact. Its places page describes announcements of vacancies and entry examinations, followed by enrolment evidence. The page includes older information and an online form shown as not yet open; do not assume a current vacancy, current fee or working online application. School's admissions page; School office.
- Contact the secretary for the current academic year's entry dates, grade availability and assessment arrangements.
- Send the requested school record and identity evidence through the channel it specifies. Ask whether foreign records need translation or formal recognition.
- After an offer, obtain a written list of enrolment documents. Its published examples include academic records, birth evidence and photographs; religious records appear in this school's list, so ask how they apply to your child.
- Confirm tuition, other charges, payment schedule, uniform, transport and start date before signing a nearby lease.
For higher education, UNGE's current site identifies Malabo, Bata and Mongomo campuses and publishes admission-related information, including October 2026 selection results. Choose the course and campus first, then ask the admissions office how your foreign secondary or university qualification is recognised. UNGE's actual university site. A domestic selection result does not establish foreign-student eligibility, and admission does not settle immigration permission.
Keep a separate file for each student containing the offer, paid-fee receipts, timetable and the immigration advice covering that person. Plan the move around the confirmed enrolment date rather than an assumed term calendar.
06Test a retirement plan against a real residence basis
No dedicated pensioner or retirement immigration category, income threshold or automatic residence entitlement was verified in the primary material reviewed. A bank's pension account is a financial product; it does not create a visa route. Begin by explaining the proposed long-term stay to the responsible Equatorial Guinean consulate, including nationality, family connection if relevant and the source of support.
- Request the actual residence basis available to you and the office that decides it. Ask whether the application is made before travel or locally and what dependants require.
- Get the permission's duration, renewal conditions and rules for absences in writing before committing to a long lease.
- Obtain a pension statement and discuss payment into an account you can use locally. Confirm transfer charges and the evidence the receiving bank needs for recurring foreign income.
- Price health insurance that accepts your age, conditions and intended residence. Include evacuation arrangements where clinically needed, not merely a short-holiday policy.
- Review taxation of the pension in both countries and the cost of returning for specialist care or family obligations.
Use the consular visa service for the first administrative enquiry and BANGE's actual personal products for banking questions. A visitor approval is useful only for the activities and period it permits; repeated visits should not be treated as an established settlement plan.
07Prepare one document file for each person and a separate shipping file
Build the files around the actual applications. Passport names should match the invitation, employment contract, school records and booking. Keep originals in hand luggage, with separate copies and an accessible encrypted digital set. Bring the printed entry approval and contact details for the host or employer who can answer an arrival enquiry.
For a work-visa application, the embassy in Spain lists police evidence, invitation, financial records, insurance and vaccination documentation. Obtain the current version for your own consular jurisdiction before ordering certificates. Ask the receiving office what legalisation and translation it accepts, how recent a police record must be and whether a dependent's marriage or birth record needs the same treatment. Visa evidence by category.
Yellow-fever vaccination evidence is part of current entry guidance. Arrange travel-health advice early enough to obtain a valid certificate and discuss malaria prevention and ongoing medicines. Carry medicines in their original packaging with a prescription and enough authorised supply to bridge the first appointment. Entry and vaccination guidance; Destination health advice.
For belongings, create a numbered inventory showing the owner, item, value and whether it is used. Ask the carrier's destination broker for the actual import documentation and written duty treatment for your nationality and status before shipment. Confirm destination storage charges and who clears the goods. A residence application does not establish a verified duty-free household allowance.
Optional pet move: current destination import-permit, vaccination timing, microchip and quarantine conditions could not be independently verified. Ask the consulate to identify the veterinary import authority and obtain its written conditions before booking the animal. Your origin country's official veterinarian must prepare the appropriate export evidence; the US-specific starting point is APHIS pet export guidance. Also obtain the airline's acceptance, routing and crate requirements. Airline acceptance and veterinary import permission are separate.
08Leave immigration with a recorded entry and reach your booked address
Keep the passport, printed approval, yellow-fever certificate, accommodation evidence and onward booking readily available. Answer the purpose-of-visit question consistently with the application; show the work-related paperwork if that is the authorised purpose of entry.
- Before leaving immigration, inspect the passport for the visa or entry stamp and the permitted period. Current British-passport guidance specifically says to ensure border staff issue the visa and stamp; a missing record can cause later problems. This is not a general promise of visa on arrival for other nationalities. Current border instructions.
- Keep baggage and any customs paperwork together. If an item needs declaration or inspection, retain the resulting record for the destination broker.
- Meet the transport booked through your accommodation or employer. Have a telephone number and street landmark as well as an online map pin.
- At the accommodation, record the address and host's contact, test your phone connection, and find the nearest usable food shop and cash-access option.
- Photograph or scan the recorded entry for your administrative file. Calendar the actual permitted end date and any appointment already agreed.
Identity checks occur within the country. Current guidance advises carrying a passport or residence document, or a copy; keep originals secure when a copy is appropriate. Photography around government, military and airport facilities is restricted, so seek permission rather than treating every administrative building as an arrival-photo opportunity. Identity and photography guidance.
If the job includes a relocation representative, meet that person promptly to compare the appointment schedule with your entry period. An unanswered application must not silently turn into an assumed extension.
09Complete residence, tax and employment registrations as separate tasks
For stays beyond a short visit, current British guidance identifies a one-year residence permission from National Security. The complete fee schedule and universal application checklist were not publicly verified for this review. Use your employer or consular referral to locate the responsible National Security service and obtain the checklist for your own category. Residence authority and duration; Work and residence explanation.
- Present the passport and entry record, together with the category-specific employer, family or other evidence the office requires. Confirm whether an address record, police document, photographs or local medical evidence is needed in your case.
- Request the current itemised official payment order. Pay through the authorised channel and keep the receipt linked to the application number.
- Keep proof of submission and any appointment or collection instruction. Ask expressly whether a pending application affects your authorised stay or ability to travel; do not assume it does.
- On issue, check the name, validity, conditions and any address details. Record the renewal lead time the office gives you.
There is conflicting public re-entry wording: the Spanish consulate's older work page mentions an additional re-entry visa, while current British guidance says holders of valid residence permission do not need a visa. Have National Security confirm the requirement for your nationality and actual document before an overseas trip. Preserve the written answer with the travel documents.
Tax identification, the NIF, is a separate record. Ask payroll or Hacienda whether you need individual registration and which tax office handles your status. Hacienda's actual declaration forms request NIF, tax address and period; selecting a company form simply because it is downloadable is not the correct process for an employee. Tax form directory; Actual common declaration form. Keep employer payroll registration and INSESO affiliation evidence alongside, without treating either as a substitute for residence.
10Open the account that fits your salary and payment needs
Start with the bank used by your employer if this simplifies salary payment, then compare the actual package with alternatives in CNEF's regulatory tariff directory. BANGE is one practical starting point, with personal current and savings products. Actual personal banking services; Bank tariff comparisons.
- Ask the branch for its current foreign-individual checklist and whether your existing passport and residence evidence are sufficient. Its older published KYC form lists identity documentation, photographs and employment or income evidence; use that to prepare, but have the branch confirm the current list. Dated KYC form.
- For salary payment, take the contract or employer certificate and available payslips. For another income source, explain and document that source rather than entering a fictitious employer.
- Choose the account and package separately from the card. Obtain the schedule showing maintenance, package, card, transfer, foreign-currency and closure charges.
- Make the required opening deposit, retain the account contract and obtain the account details needed by payroll.
- Activate the chosen services through the bank's instructions and test a small withdrawal or payment before relying on them.
The CNEF-published BANGE tariff effective January 2026 gives a XAF 20,000 minimum personal opening amount and XAF 2,300 monthly for the Basic pack, before VAT. It identifies certain basic services as free; that does not make every package or card free. Do not use the XAF 50,000 amount from older KYC material as the current opening minimum. 2026 regulatory tariff.
For international transfers, ask the bank what purpose and supporting records it needs before the first large payment. Maintain a modest cash buffer for places that do not accept your card and split it securely. Test your own foreign card locally rather than assuming every machine supports it.
11Inspect the property and put the whole rental agreement in writing
Begin through the employer's relocation contact, trusted local referrals or a landlord whose identity and authority to let the property can be demonstrated. Inspect the actual unit, not only an example apartment in the same development. A furnished offer should include a dated inventory covering appliances, furniture and existing damage.
- Visit during a normal weekday. Test the journey to the office or school, mobile reception and the rooms' ventilation, dampness and locks.
- Run taps and ask about water storage, pumping and who maintains the system. Establish how electricity is metered, whether backup power serves your unit and who pays for its fuel or maintenance.
- Ask GETESA about coverage at this precise address before accepting an internet-ready claim. A service available elsewhere in Malabo or Bata may not be installable in the building.
- Read the contrato de alquiler with a competent Spanish reader if needed. Specify rent currency, payment interval, term, deposit or fianza, included bills, repair responsibilities, notice and deposit-return procedure.
- Verify the person receiving money is the owner or authorised representative. Keep a receipt identifying the property, amount, period and whether the payment is rent or refundable security.
- At handover, record keys, meter numbers/readings and inventory, with photographs agreed by both parties.
A standard national deposit amount or statutory rent ceiling was not verified. Negotiate the actual written terms and obtain local legal advice for a substantial prepayment or purchase. If an employer pays, establish whether the lease is in your name or the employer's and what happens if employment ends.
Make the service boundary explicit: a quoted furnished rent may still leave electricity, generator costs, cleaning, internet or water purchases outside the price. Compare complete offers rather than a single headline monthly amount. Use the operator's service listing as a starting point for connectivity questions, not a guarantee of property coverage.
12Arrange treatment access and insurance before an illness
Confirm who covers healthcare in the offer and how treatment is authorised. Private insurance, an employer arrangement and INSESO affiliation can have different benefit and payment processes. Obtain the insurer's residence and employment eligibility, policy start date, exclusions, excess and evacuation terms in writing.
INSESO's own worker-affiliation page distinguishes private employees, public employees and self-employed applicants. For a private foreign employee it lists the affiliation form, passport or residence document, a photograph and the employment contract. Public-sector and self-employed evidence differs. Have payroll obtain the right form, submit the evidence and give you proof of affiliation; downloading a form does not complete registration. Worker affiliation requirements; Forms and office submission.
Law 5/2026 introduced a new social-protection framework. No unverified older contribution percentage or automatic entitlement for all foreign residents is used here. Ask INSESO how your category, dependants and treatment authorisations are handled under the current system. 2026 social-protection law announcement.
- Identify a provider near the actual home or workplace. La Paz lists facilities in Malabo, Bata and Oyala; the Oyala provider serves the Ciudad de la Paz area. Hospital network; Centro Médico La Paz Oyala.
- Ask the chosen facility whether your insurer or employer arrangement is accepted and how appointments, deposits and emergency admissions work.
- Book ongoing prescription or specialist care early and transfer the relevant medical records securely.
- Save the provider's contact and the insurer's assistance number offline. Current UK guidance gives 3101 for an ambulance; it also notes limitations in local care and the potential need for evacuation.
Discuss malaria prevention with a qualified clinician and establish a plan for recurring medicines rather than relying on an unfamiliar pharmacy to stock everything. Current destination health guidance.
13Connect your home and plan everyday transport
Visit a GETESA service point with identity documents and ask what it accepts for registration in your name. Select a package for the way you actually use calls and data, then test coverage at home and work. Its current service channels include *100# for packages, #222# for balance and #99# for your number, with 444 support on its network. Promotional extra-data offers have their own conditions and should not be treated as permanent allowances. Operator's actual channels.
For home internet, the published TRINET offer includes unlimited 5 Mbps at XAF 33,000 monthly, equipment excluded; higher listed tiers include 10 Mbps at XAF 41,000 and 15 Mbps at XAF 60,000. Ask for address coverage, actual installation cost, equipment ownership, tax-inclusive total and cancellation terms. These are advertised service tiers, not measured performance at your home. Current service listing.
For electricity and water, obtain the existing account details and last paid bills from the landlord. Agree who contacts the supplier, who remains the account holder and who clears any pre-handover debt. Record the meter and any prepaid-system instructions. A new connection, an existing occupied property and a shared building supply need different arrangements; no unverified connection charge is included in this guide.

Plan road transport around actual pickup points and times. Arrange the first regular journey with the employer or a recommended driver and agree the fare and whether waiting is included before departure. Carry the identity record appropriate for checkpoints. Main-road travel is different from travelling to a remote mainland posting, so ask about road condition and daylight access for that route. Road and identity guidance.
Before buying a vehicle, obtain the local licence, registration, insurance and inspection requirements from the responsible office for your nationality and existing licence. An overseas licence should not be assumed valid indefinitely. For a Bioko–mainland journey, confirm the actual operator, departure point, baggage and document requirements separately; a road itinerary within Río Muni cannot cover the island crossing.
14Build a local routine and close the first-month gaps

Use institutions with an actual programme rather than relying solely on expatriate introductions. The Centro Cultural de España in Bata publishes a current October 2026 agenda, including a Friday story workshop and Thursday cinema dates, alongside library services. Choose a suitable session from its current programme and confirm registration, age conditions and any charge. Bata's current programme and services.
In Malabo, the corresponding centre publishes its own music, literature and training agenda, plus library and coworking services. Ask about access before assuming a desk or workshop place is available. These are practical ways to build a regular connection around language, reading or an interest, rather than an assumed expatriate club. Malabo's cultural centre.
Keep a small working vocabulary for the tasks you repeat: permiso de residencia for residence permission, permiso de trabajo for work permission, NIF for tax identification, fianza for rental security and recibo for a receipt. Ask colleagues which terms their office uses and write down the address and service counter that actually handled the task.
- First week: inspect the entry record, contact the employer or host, confirm registration appointments, test the phone and identify food shopping and treatment access.
- After the first visits: retain submission and payment records, choose inspected housing, agree the lease and test the daily journey.
- Before the first salary: give payroll verified account details, understand deductions and obtain INSESO affiliation evidence where applicable.
- By the end of the month: record actual spending against the initial budget, resolve utility responsibility, confirm school arrangements and save emergency and assistance contacts offline.
- For the continuing calendar: enter the actual residence and work-permit expiry dates, renewal instructions, insurance anniversary and lease notice date. Add a reminder before overseas travel to resolve the re-entry requirement for your own documents.
The move is administratively complete when the permissions are issued and understood, not when a list of applications has merely been sent. Keep the receipts and written answers: they make the next renewal, change of address or family arrival much easier to manage.
