Afghanistan visitors should confirm whether their visa application requires an embassy visit

Choose the mission before choosing an application route

Foreign nationals seeking a short visit to Afghanistan need to establish which mission can accept their application before paying for a visa. This current-rule guide examines an important inconsistency in public instructions: some official pages describe a fully electronic process while also requiring applicants to bring a printed form and passport to a mission. The sources do not establish a newly introduced rule on 3 November, or that either route is universally available.

The Afghan foreign ministry tourist-visa page lists a valid passport and hotel confirmation among the supporting evidence, a three-month validity period, a one-month stay and an 80 US dollar fee. Validity and permitted stay are different: the published three months should not be read as permission to spend three months in the country. The separate ministry visitor-visa page identifies relatives, friends, exhibitions and sports competitions as visit purposes, with stays from one to three months. Its English fee line contains a malformed currency entry, so it should not be used as a reliable payment instruction.

Compare the online promise with the passport instructions

The Abu Dhabi embassy visa-types page says it serves people residing in and applying from the United Arab Emirates. It describes an electronic application, online payment and delivery of an approved electronic visa. The same page separately directs applicants to complete the e-consulate form, print it, bring it with their passport and documents, and return to collect the passport. These are materially different submission sequences. The page does not explain which applicants can dispense with attendance.

Before submitting, ask the Abu Dhabi visa section whether your nationality and residence qualify for electronic issuance, whether the original passport must be presented, and which portal and payment instruction apply. The published telephone is +971 2 447 2666. This is a request readers can make themselves; VisaWand has not obtained a direct answer. An online form alone should not be treated as evidence that a visa has been issued.

India applicants have an express nationality restriction

The Mumbai consulate visa-types page narrows its service to people residing in and applying from India. Its electronic-visa heading expressly excludes Indian citizens. That qualification matters even though surrounding text describes electronic issuance in general terms. Indian applicants should follow the consulate route instead of assuming that the broader online description overrides the nationality restriction.

Mumbai lists a completed form, original passport and copy, two white-background passport photographs, national identity copy, travel-purpose letter, hotel reservation, flight ticket and an Afghan reference for a tourist application. The reference details include name, Afghan identity or passport copy, address and contact information. Its tourist table lists a standard 80 dollar charge, a free category for Indian citizens, and expedited charges of 50 dollars for India or 130 dollars for others. Those are Mumbai categories; residence in India does not itself establish Indian citizenship or entitlement to its free category.

Prepare uploads without assuming a generic page is local

The official embassy-domain Before You Apply page specifies a white-background photograph under 50 KB, PDF supporting files no larger than 300 KB each, one continuous application session, documents uploaded before the photograph, and AT in place of the email-address symbol. Prepare legible files within those limits before beginning that particular form. A successful upload is only a technical submission step, not a decision on eligibility.

That page carries Mumbai application contact details alongside Abu Dhabi footer information. Because the institutional identifiers are mixed, applicants should confirm the applicable local instructions with their receiving mission. This is especially relevant to office hours and where an original passport should be delivered. The source does not resolve whether every mission uses identical upload rules or whether an incomplete session can be recovered.

Check travel conditions separately from the visa decision

For British citizens, the UK government entry-requirements page says a visa is required and the Afghan embassy in London is closed. It advises checking travel documents with the travel provider and warns that departure authorities may request polio-vaccination evidence. Its advice is expressly written for full British-citizen passport holders; it is not a universal nationality checklist.

The UK government advises against all travel to Afghanistan. A visa application is therefore not a safety endorsement. No general application deadline or guaranteed processing time is established by the pages compared here. Obtain the correct visa before travel, read the actual permitted-stay conditions on issuance, and raise an extension question with the Afghan authority before that permission expires.
