An arrival-visa route for organised southern tourism
Foreign visitors considering Algeria’s Sahara tourism route should obtain the required agency-arranged authorisation before departing, rather than assume that any tourist can request a visa after landing. Algerian diplomatic missions describe a special arrival-visa arrangement linked to accredited travel agencies and approved southern itineraries. This current guide reviews that existing facilitation; no new October 2026 opening of a general visa-on-arrival scheme has been verified.
The Embassy in New Delhi describes the measure as exceptional and temporary. Its instructions require agreement with an accredited Algerian agency, submission of identity and travel-document information and the chosen itinerary, followed by an authorisation carrying a QR code. That authorisation facilitates boarding for the organised southern journey, including specified transit through northern international airports. Use those instructions to establish the pre-departure document needed, not merely the hotel reservation.
Confirm the itinerary because official province lists differ
The Embassy in Baku says the programme applies exclusively to Saharan tourism through agencies accredited by the tourism ministry. It publishes a list of twenty-four southern provinces and says the agency enters the tourist programme through an official digital platform. It distinguishes travellers whose organised destination falls within the southern programme from those visiting other provinces under normal visa requirements.
The Brussels embassy’s southern-tourism announcement describes an organised-group facility with arrival visas not exceeding thirty days and names a shorter set of eligible provinces. It says agencies transmit boarding authorisations with QR codes after processing and visa fees are paid on arrival. Because the lists are not identical, obtain written confirmation that the particular route, arrival point and agency programme are approved. A traveller should not independently add northern sightseeing days and assume the special authorisation automatically covers the amended programme.
Independent or different-purpose journeys use the ordinary route
The Foreign Ministry’s general entry-visa guidance says foreigners subject to visas normally apply through the diplomatic or consular post responsible for their usual residence. The general file includes duplicate forms, a passport valid for at least six months and a copy, two recent photographs, travel insurance and repatriation assistance. A foreign national applying outside their citizenship country supplies residence-card evidence. Use this resource when the southern-tourism arrangement does not fit the intended journey.
For tourist applications, the ministry identifies a town-hall-legalised accommodation certificate, hotel reservation or agency certificate specifying the nature and location of the trip. Business, study and employment have separate supporting requirements. The ministry says fees vary by country and reciprocity can produce exemptions; no universal nationality-independent arrival charge is confirmed here. Ask the responsible consulate or approved agency for the applicable amount and payment instructions before departure.
Check the stay authorised and arrange any change before expiry
The UK government’s Algeria guidance tells British-citizen passport holders that a visa is required and that the passport must be valid for six months after arrival. It acknowledges the possible southern-tourism arrival route with an approved local-agency reservation, but directs travellers to the Algerian Consulate for confirmation. Use that passport-specific resource to cross-check the travel file, while other nationalities must establish their own consular position.
The same guidance directs visitors seeking an extension to the nearest wilaya and warns of detention and possible prosecution after overstaying. The thirty-day description in the southern-tourism announcement should therefore be checked against the actual visa and admission conditions. An illustrative traveller whose return flight moves beyond the endorsed period should contact the agency and competent immigration authority promptly; changing a flight does not itself extend immigration permission.
Visa facilitation does not settle access to every border area
The UK’s separate Algeria travel-warning page identifies restricted-advice zones along several international borders and explains the possible insurance implications of travelling against official advice. Consult the geographic warning alongside the approved itinerary: a province’s appearance in a tourism-visa announcement does not establish that every district or border route within it is suitable or accessible.
The actionable sequence is to identify the passport and purpose, agree a qualifying programme with an accredited agency where appropriate, receive and check the boarding authorisation, confirm the entry point and payable fees, and track the permission issued at arrival. The reviewed announcements do not provide a universal decision-time guarantee or resolve the differing province lists. Clarify those points before buying non-changeable travel, using the relevant embassy guidance and the agency handling the official application.
