Armenia citizenship applications require an online case and later original documents

Current official guidance separates electronic filing, evidence for the legal ground and a subsequent passport application. Citizenship fees and passport charges are different payments.

Use the citizenship system for the citizenship case

Armenia’s Foreign Affairs Ministry states that citizenship acquisition and termination applications, verification, processing and appointments for presenting originals have operated exclusively through mcs-citizenship.am since 1 January 2026. This current guide explains that existing procedure, which is separate from the residence-permit platform. An applicant should select the citizenship service rather than assume that an employment or residence account starts a nationality case.

The ministry’s application guide sets out the electronic sequence: choose the service and legal ground, identify the applicant, supply the photograph and general information, and provide the supporting evidence associated with that ground. The Migration and Citizenship Service’s Grounds for granting citizenship page confirms the official portal and distinguishes acquisition from renunciation and the special procedures involving minors or legally incapacitated people. Use that page to reach the appropriate service. An electronic account is an access tool; selecting an option or uploading a passport does not itself establish the right to citizenship or replace the required original-document stage.

The supporting documents depend on the legal ground

The National Services Gateway’s citizenship guide lists different bases, including Armenian ethnicity, qualifying residence, marriage, an Armenian parent or child, and particular former-citizenship or protection situations. The documents differ accordingly. For an ethnicity-based file, the guide describes a passport, birth certificate and photograph, together with suitable evidence of Armenian background where the birth record does not establish it. For the residence basis, proof of lawful residence is material.

The marriage route is not described as immediate citizenship on marrying: the guide identifies a two-year marriage period and at least 365 days of lawful residence during that period. Applicants should assess the actual rule and supporting records, rather than choosing whichever category seems to require fewer uploads. A family certificate may prove a relationship without proving the required residence history. Prepare a consistent chain of records where names have changed, and select the listed evidence that actually establishes the ground. The guide is a route to the applicable requirements, not a personalised conclusion that every person meeting one headline description will be approved.

Authenticate foreign documents and pay the citizenship charge

The Foreign Affairs Ministry requires foreign official documents to carry the applicable apostille or consular legalisation. Foreign-language material is then translated into Armenian; its guidance also addresses authentication of certified or sworn translations. Confirm the issuing-country procedure before paying for a translation that may need a different authentication sequence. A scan suitable for uploading does not remove the need to present properly prepared originals.

The ministry lists AMD 50,000 for citizenship acquisition and AMD 150,000 for termination, paid through the electronic citizenship system, and describes the state charge as non-refundable. The Migration and Citizenship Service’s separate fee-change notice dates those rates to 1 September 2025. Older references to a lower acquisition charge should therefore be read against that later notice. Keep payment evidence associated with the correct service: an acquisition payment is not a residence-card payment or a passport charge. No universal end-to-end decision guarantee is established here, particularly where additional verification or an original-document appointment is required.

A favourable decision is followed by a passport application

The Foreign Affairs Ministry’s Passport resource has a specific section for people granted Armenian citizenship. It lists the foreign passport, citizenship notification or presidential-decree details, the application and consular-fee receipt, with the military-registration documentation required for the relevant male applicants. The published consular passport charge for that section is USD 166. Applicants using a domestic passport service should obtain that service’s applicable instructions rather than assume the consular amount is a universal price.

The passport guidance also explains additional consent and family-document requirements for children. A parent’s successful citizenship case should not be treated as completion of every child’s documentary step. For adults potentially subject to military obligations, confirm the individual position before making travel or passport-validity assumptions; citizenship can carry obligations as well as rights. The practical next action after approval is to follow the correct passport procedure with the citizenship decision evidence. Until then, an online case reference, payment receipt and positive citizenship notification should not be confused with a travel document ready for use at the border.
