Six months to search does not mean permission to work
Austria very highly qualified jobseekers should distinguish the visa allowing a search from the permission needed to begin employment. The Austrian Foreign Ministry describes a six-month category D jobseeker visa and expressly says employment is not permitted under it. This is current application guidance checked on 29 October 2026, not an announcement of a new general visa for anyone seeking work.
The federal migration portal limits the route to very highly qualified third-country applicants who reach at least 70 points under its criteria. It is intended for someone without a job offer; an applicant already holding a suitable offer may instead assess the relevant Red-White-Red Card route. Use the category page to identify the actual route rather than assume that a degree or willingness to relocate automatically establishes eligibility.
A calculator result is an initial estimate
The migration portal FAQ says the points calculator provides orientation based on the applicant self-assessment and does not replace authority evaluation. The category page explains that the Public Employment Service, AMS, must confirm the required points to the diplomatic representation. Applicants should prepare evidence for the points claimed, not treat a screenshot of a score as an approval document.
For illustration, a person estimating points for education, experience and language should compare each claim with the stated criteria and available records before arranging a consular appointment. If a document cannot substantiate the claimed qualification or experience, the official assessment may differ. This example does not assign a score to a particular applicant. The practical next action is to identify any evidence gap while there is time to obtain records or translations.
The consular file includes funds and accommodation
The Austrian embassy Bangkok published checklist requires a valid passport, current biometric photograph, evidence of adequate Austrian accommodation, health insurance covering all risks and sufficient means of subsistence. It also asks for the documentary basis of individual points, including qualifications, research, senior-management experience, awards, work certificates or language evidence as applicable. Thai documents require full diplomatic legalization under that mission checklist.
Use the checklist of the receiving embassy for local authentication and submission arrangements; Bangkok legalization instructions should not be generalized to every country. The federal category page requires originals and copies, translations where documents are not in German or English, and legalized versions where requested. A complete file should explain both basic living arrangements and the claimed professional qualifications, rather than provide one employment history document as a substitute for every requirement.
Fees, professional recognition and the job offer are separate tests
The federal category information lists EUR195 for the jobseeker visa and EUR218 as the application fee for the residence route. Those are separate stages rather than a single promise that one payment covers searching, residence and employment. Confirm the actual fee and payment method with the receiving authority before submission; this review does not establish a guaranteed processing period or approval outcome.
The official professional-recognition resource explains that formal recognition requirements depend on the qualification and intended profession. Regulated occupations require evidence meeting the applicable professional rules; most non-regulated work does not require the same formal recognition process. Use that resource to identify the responsible recognition route before relying on an immigration points assessment as permission to practise a regulated profession.
Finding an employer is a further step. The migration category page says the employment must match the qualification and provide adequate pay, with an employer declaration supporting the card application. The residence card is tied to the specified employer. A general expression of interest from a company should not be treated as the employment contract or final permission needed to start work.
Plan the outcome before the search permission expires
The migration FAQ distinguishes lawful visa-free job searching from the special six-month visa and says the latter is unavailable to people outside the very-highly-qualified category. It also contains differing descriptions of remaining in Austria while a card application is pending, including conditions involving an in-person domestic filing. Someone approaching expiry should therefore obtain confirmation for the actual application rather than assume all filings create a right to remain.
The concrete sequence is to verify points and evidence, apply through the competent representation if the visa is needed, search within the authorized period and secure the appropriate employment permission before working. Confirm any pending-application stay right before the existing permission expires; where no such right applies, arrange departure and await the decision abroad.
