The residence-card expiry controls the renewal deadline
Third-country students in Austria should plan residence renewal around the expiry of their individual card, rather than a university’s general semester calendar. The federal student-permit guidance requires a personal renewal application before expiry, at the earliest three months beforehand. This current guide checks the operating requirements on 30 October 2026; it does not present an existing annual renewal procedure as a newly announced rule.
The general federal renewal page explains that the competent authority is the residence authority for the applicant’s Austrian address. Some authorities require an appointment, so students should check the local submission arrangements within the available window. The page lists an application charge of EUR218. Its limited exception for a late filing concerns an unavoidable or unforeseen obstacle, low or no fault, and filing within two weeks after the obstacle ends. It is not a general grace period for anyone who overlooks the card date.
Timely renewal and international travel are different questions
The federal renewal guidance says applicants retain the same rights and labour-market access as under the existing title during the relevant renewal process. That does not expand a student’s employment rights into unrestricted full-time work. The general renewal page also describes a paid confirmation placed in the travel document, often called a Notvignette, which can be valid for up to three months for the stated return journey.
A student whose card will expire during a trip should therefore ask the residence authority what return documentation is required before leaving. Evidence that a renewal has been lodged should not simply be assumed to function as an ordinary valid residence card at every border. Keep the submission acknowledgement and check the route, destination and return date with the authority. The practical issue is preserving lawful residence and an authorised journey, not treating a pending file as a newly issued travel document.
Prepare study evidence and the current maintenance calculation
The federal student-application page lists valid travel identification, a recent photograph, comprehensive health insurance and evidence of sufficient means. Renewal additionally requires proof of study success, the current study record and confirmation of continuing studies. A student who has completed the qualification and seeks the graduate job-search period instead needs evidence of successful completion. Use the student procedure to identify the document category, not merely a generic bank balance and an old admission letter.
The Austrian Agency for Education and Internationalisation, OeAD, publishes the 2026 monthly maintenance figures: EUR722.58 for students under twenty-four and EUR1,308.39 from age twenty-four. Its guidance requires proof for twelve months in advance, with additional funds where accommodation exceeds EUR386.43 per month and for necessary health insurance. An account should be in the applicant’s name and accessible from Austria. Use that calculation guidance to assess the complete evidence rather than assume the base monthly figure includes any rent or insurance amount.
An employer must obtain permission for a student job
The federal Studying and Working for Third-Country Nationals page says students need an employment permit even for marginal employment. The employer applies to the Public Employment Service, AMS. Employment of up to twenty hours weekly can be authorised without a labour-market test; more than twenty hours is not categorically impossible, but requires the relevant labour-market assessment. Work must not undermine education as the principal residence purpose.
The official employment-permit information service identifies the responsible AMS regional office by the proposed workplace, or by the business location where workplaces vary. It explains that AMS must consider replacement workers when the requested hours exceed the simplified student allowance. The next action for a prospective employer is therefore to establish the appropriate application and receive permission before work starts. A signed part-time contract, enrolment or residence-renewal receipt does not independently complete that employer procedure.
Graduation changes the question that the application must answer
The federal migration FAQ describes a twelve-month student-permit extension for qualifying graduates of specified Austrian degree programmes to search for work or establish a business, subject to the general residence conditions. It also says employment of up to twenty hours during that period still needs the employer’s AMS application. The graduate search period should not be confused with either automatic access to any job or the separate jobseeker visa for highly qualified people applying through another route.
Before filing, establish whether the case is continuing study, completed study with a qualifying search purpose or a change to another residence title. Match that choice to the card expiry, study evidence, funds, insurance and any employer application. No single October deadline applies to every student in the resources checked. The immediate deadline is the individual residence expiry, with the local authority’s appointment and document requirements resolved in advance.
