The employer must plan the renewal before expiry
Azerbaijan’s State Migration Service says employers must apply to extend a foreign employee’s work permit at least 30 days before it expires. This current guide explains the existing renewal rule and related employment obligations; it does not announce a newly introduced deadline. Employers and workers should record the work-permit expiry separately from the date on a visa or residence document.
The published Migration Code provides that a work permit normally covers one year, or the shorter employment-contract period. It describes a separate provision allowing extensions of up to two years for work in the territories specified by Article 69.1-1 of the Migration Code. That exception should not be assumed to cover an ordinary job elsewhere. Ask the employer to identify the applicable location and permission before choosing the requested duration. The service’s separate FAQ is also the resource for the electronic, regional-office and ASAN submission routes, rather than relying on an informal assurance that a renewal has been arranged.
ASAN lists the application evidence and fee options
The official ASAN work-permit service page identifies the employer’s application questionnaire, the worker’s passport copy, notarised qualification evidence, justification for recruiting the foreign worker, the relevant employer registration documents and a medical certificate addressing the listed infectious diseases. These are not all documents the employee can obtain alone. Agree who will assemble the company evidence and check that the qualifications correspond to the actual position before submission.
ASAN links fees to both permit duration and processing period. For permission of up to one year, it lists 1,000 manat under the 20-working-day option, 1,200 manat for 15 working days and 1,400 manat for ten working days. Shorter durations have different charges. Use the service’s actual fee table to select the correct combination, not a generic quote for a one-year permit. It also warns that failure to pay within the specified 30-day payment period can cancel the permit. Payment is therefore a separate completion step, not merely evidence that someone began preparing the application.
Check exemptions before applying for the ordinary permit
The migration service’s dedicated work-permit page explains that the employer obtains permission for the worker and employs that person at its own workplace under a contract corresponding to the permission. It describes a labour-market condition concerning the availability of suitably qualified Azerbaijani workers. A job offer alone is therefore not a complete explanation of the employer’s immigration obligations.
The same page lists categories exempt from a work permit, including permanent residents, certain diplomatic and international-organisation staff, specified university lecturers, qualifying spouses of Azerbaijani citizens registered locally, and other defined groups. The detailed conditions matter: a title such as specialist, director or spouse should not be treated as sufficient without checking the relevant category. Use the dedicated page to identify the exemption actually relied on and retain supporting evidence. Where permission is required, a worker’s tourist entry or a company’s commercial invitation does not itself establish that the employer has obtained the necessary employment authorisation.
Residence permission and early termination need separate attention
The service’s temporary-residence guidance describes the residence card as the document authorising temporary residence and visa-free exit and re-entry during its validity. Holding a work permit is one listed basis for obtaining residence permission, but the two documents perform different functions. The page also sets out other possible residence grounds. A worker or family should check the basis actually granted rather than assume that any application still pending preserves every right indefinitely.
The employment FAQ gives specific steps when a contract ends early: the employer must notify the service within five working days, and the work permit becomes invalid. A worker with no other lawful basis to remain must leave within ten working days. If employment is ending or changing, establish the remaining residence position promptly and obtain the appropriate official instructions before relying on a new offer. These are conditional deadlines tied to the employment event, not a universal ten-day grace period after any document expires. The resources do not guarantee a replacement permit or explain every individual exemption; the next action depends on the worker’s actual category and other permission to stay.
