Bahrain Golden Residency holders must track work-permit renewal separately from residence

An August LMRA service change supports faster digital renewal, but official pages differ on available periods and handling times. Employers should check the transaction before the work permit expires.

The August upgrade concerns employment permission, not a new residence award

Bahrain’s Labour Market Regulatory Authority announced on 30 August 2026 that it had developed a digital renewal service for the work permits of Golden Residency holders. The announcement describes renewal before the work permit expires, with available periods of six months, one year or two years. It says handling was reduced from ten working days to an immediate automated procedure. This current follow-up explains that existing service improvement; it does not announce new Golden Residency eligibility.

The development matters because long-duration residence and the permission needed for a particular employment transaction are different administrative records. An employee should check the work-permit expiry rather than assume it matches the residence document. Likewise, an employer should identify whether it is renewing an existing permit or seeking the first employment permission after the employee obtained Golden Residency. The August announcement is evidence of the digital change, not a personal extension certificate.

Use the renewal service and resolve the published differences

The National Portal’s Renewal of the Work Permit for Golden Residency Holders page says an employer may renew six months before expiry. It lists one-year and two-year periods, requires the employee’s declaration in the application form to be signed, and describes submission through eSupport in the Expat Management System. The employer should retain the ticket and follow the payment and verification instructions shown in the transaction.

There are differences between that directory and the August announcement: the directory still states three working days, while the later announcement describes immediate automation and also mentions six-month renewals. The directory further says an existing valid work permit issued before Golden Residency can be renewed directly for continued employment with the same employer without extra documents. These differences should be checked with LMRA against the employee’s actual record. They do not justify promising every applicant an instant result or assuming a six-month option will appear in every channel.

Check whether the case is a new permit or a renewal

The separate New Work Permit for Golden Residency Holders service lists documents for an initial application, including passport, identity card, Golden Residency evidence and the relevant establishment information. Approvals from the responsible authority are required for specialised professions. The service also identifies an exemption where the Golden Residency holder is an investor who is a partner in the establishment. That specific exception should not be extended to every employee who holds long-term residence.

This initial-application page describes cancellation and replacement of a pre-existing work permit when it becomes due for renewal, whereas the renewal page allows direct renewal for the same employer. Before cancelling a valid record, an employer facing that apparent inconsistency should ask LMRA which transaction applies. The practical question is whether the system recognises a straightforward renewal or requires conversion to the Golden Residency employment category. LMRA’s Permit/Service Application Form provides a dedicated Golden/Platinum visa-holder category; it should be selected only for the procedure the authority confirms.

Authorised employers can use remote assistance before expiry

The National Portal also lists a remote renewal service for Golden/Platinum visa holders through the Virtual Service Centre. It is available to the employer, responsible person or authorised person, who must be registered against the establishment and show an identity card. That page lists one-year and two-year periods and a one-working-day service time, another reason to distinguish the selected channel from a general processing promise.

The remote-service listing gives BHD 195 for one year or BHD 390 for two years, plus a BHD 5 administrative fee. Applicants should confirm the itemised payable amount for their own transaction rather than infer a six-month charge by dividing those figures. NPRA’s Golden Residency guidance separately describes permanent residence subject to a BHD 300 administrative payment every ten years. That residence payment is not the employer’s work-permit renewal charge. For unresolved channel, duration or conversion questions, the remote-service page gives LMRA’s contact number as 17506055. Resolve those questions before the existing work permission expires; none of the reviewed pages announces a blanket expiry extension.
