Identify whether a tourist visa or entry permit applies

Bhutan’s tourism entry arrangements distinguish nationality, travel document and visit purpose. Most tourists must obtain visa approval before travelling. This current guide explains the official visa and permit instructions available on 29 October; it does not announce a newly introduced entry scheme. Planning the correct permission matters before paying for flights, accommodation and the nightly Sustainable Development Fee, or SDF.

The tourism FAQ identifies Indian entry permits, arrival visas for Bangladeshi and Maldivian nationals, and arrival-visa eligibility for Swiss and Thai diplomatic or government-official passport holders. Ordinary Swiss or Thai passports do not share that exception. Other tourists should obtain approval in advance through Immigration.

Prepare digital documents and allow for review

Use Bhutan Travel’s visa page to begin the online application or arrange submission through a hotel or tour operator. It lists a digital copy of a valid passport, recent passport photograph, arrival and departure dates, and payment details. An applicant can also include travelling companions when the necessary information is available for each person. Check spelling and dates against every traveller’s documents.

The published sequence includes accepting the visitor pledge, creating an account, entering travel information and paying the application charge and SDF. The visa page states review within five working days after submission; this is an administrative review period, not permission to board before approval. Allow room for incomplete information or payment problems. The department recommends notifying the bank about the international payment to reduce avoidable payment delays.

Calculate the nightly levy separately from the visa charge

The standard visa application charge is a one-off, non-refundable US$40. The tourism FAQ lists the ordinary international adult SDF as US$100 per night, with US$50 for children aged six to under twelve and no SDF for those under six. Indian nationals have a separate rate of Nu./INR 1,200 per person per night, reduced to 600 for children aged six to under twelve.

For illustration, two adults and a ten-year-old travelling under the standard international rate for five nights incur US$1,250 in SDF alone: five nights multiplied by US$250 for the family. This calculation excludes visa charges, hotels, transport and guide arrangements. A package quotation should distinguish those components so a visitor can see what has already been paid and avoid confusing the nightly levy with a complete holiday price. Special arrangements should be confirmed for the actual nationality and itinerary.

Use the Indian consulate’s checklist for an Indian journey

The Indian consulate in Phuentsholing’s guidance, updated on 9 October 2026, identifies an original Indian passport with at least six months’ validity or original voter ID as the adult travel documents. For a child under eighteen, it lists a passport or English-language birth certificate and accompaniment by a legal guardian. It also specifies two passport photographs. An ordinary domestic identity document should not be substituted without official confirmation.

That consular guide directs independent Indian tourists to arrange an online permit, certified accommodation, a guide, travel insurance and transport. Drivers taking an Indian-registered vehicle beyond the designated zone face a separate vehicle charge and document requirements. Use the vehicle section before planning a self-drive itinerary; paying SDF for passengers does not settle the vehicle’s permission or charges. The consulate lists the original driving licence and registration, vehicle insurance, emission and roadworthiness evidence, plus owner authorisation where the driver is not the owner. Prepare that separate vehicle file alongside the passenger documents.

Resolve extension instructions before the authorised stay ends

The tourism FAQ says a visa allows a maximum ninety-day stay and that an extension must be requested before the original visa or permit expires. However, its visa section describes extension through the original online login, while its SDF section describes an in-person immigration request. These instructions are not fully aligned. Confirm the correct procedure with Immigration early, retaining access to the original application account.

For British citizen passport holders, the UK government’s entry page specifies passport validity extending six months beyond planned departure and says business or other non-tourism visas must be arranged through the sponsoring organisation. It also advises checking the visa stamp at entry. The practical deadlines are approval before travel where required and extension before expiry; a hotel reservation or an intention to pay additional SDF does not itself extend immigration permission.
