Bolivia asks family-visa applicants to document the relationship

Family applicants should check relationship records, local consular instructions and the separate permission needed for a longer stay in Bolivia.

Identify the family purpose before collecting general visa documents

Bolivia’s family visa forms part of its specific-purpose visa arrangements, but published consular instructions distinguish family applications from ordinary employment files. This is a current guide to those differences, not a new family-route announcement. The Bolivian Embassy in Geneva’s Visa page should be used to identify the purpose-specific requirements before assembling a generic work-visa application.

That page lists a passport valid for at least six months, a sworn visa application, evidence supporting the intended activity and criminal-record evidence for applicants over 16. It excludes family cases from its general bank-statement or credit-card evidence requirement, and from the entity invitation requirement applied to some other purposes. These distinctions do not eliminate the need to prove the family basis. They also should not be assumed to settle another consulate’s checklist: applicants must obtain instructions from the office actually handling their file.

Match the civil records to the relative in Bolivia

The embassy in Sweden provides a more detailed family checklist. For a blood relationship with a Bolivian national living in Bolivia, it identifies the applicant’s original birth certificate and certified evidence or a legalised copy of the relative’s Bolivian identity card. Where the relative is a foreign resident, the identity evidence instead concerns that person’s foreigner identity card.

For spouses, its list calls for the original marriage certificate and the relevant Bolivian or foreign-resident identity evidence. A person travelling to marry must provide the civil-registry record establishing the planned ceremony date, the intended spouse’s identity evidence and a certificate of single status from the home civil registry. Use this resource to determine which relationship the documents must demonstrate, rather than provide a relative’s passport alone. The page says the family visa enables a further application for transitional or temporary permission through the migration authority; the consular visa is not itself an indefinite residence award.

Resolve differences before filing or sending originals

The Bolivian Embassy in Canada publishes a broader specific-purpose visa checklist that asks for a presentation letter explaining the journey, financial resources, a travel reservation and police evidence. It warns that incomplete applications are returned without processing. Because that checklist is not a dedicated family-category document, applicants should ask whether its general financial requirements apply to their family case rather than assume it overrides Geneva’s stated exception.

For a minor, its financial checklist refers to evidence from parents or guardians. The Canadian instructions also specify an application form and payment method for that mission. Use the embassy page to prepare a Canadian-filed application and confirm how original documents are to be submitted. Do not combine one consulate’s payment method with another’s appointment or postal procedure. Identifying the competent office before ordering certificates or dispatching a passport reduces the risk of a file being assembled to incompatible instructions.

Confirm the fee and arrange the longer-stay follow-up

Geneva’s published consular tariff lists US$85 for a specific-purpose visa for work, health or family. Sweden’s family page instead quotes SEK 1,000. These are published mission-specific payment references, not an exchange-rate calculation for every applicant. Confirm the currency, current payable amount and method with the handling consulate. Neither figure establishes the cost of later residence procedures, document certification or translation.

The Chilean Congressional Library’s official analysis of Bolivia’s migration framework explains the distinction between consular visa functions and the Directorate General of Migration’s role in controlling and granting stay within Bolivia. Use it for that institutional background, then obtain the actual follow-up requirements from the migration authority. Before departure, ask how long the issued family visa permits the individual to remain and when any further application must be filed. The sources reviewed do not establish a guaranteed processing deadline for every consulate or an automatic extension. Record the dates on the actual permission and arrange the next step before relying on a longer stay.
