Bosnia spouse residence requires a sponsor-status check beyond the invitation letter
Current official guidance distinguishes family-residence eligibility, permission to enter and payment evidence. Couples should select the checklist matching the sponsor’s actual status.

Residence permission and a visit are different procedures
Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Service for Foreigners’ Affairs publishes separate procedures for entering the country and obtaining temporary residence through family reunification. This current guide explains the spouse route involving a foreign resident, rather than announcing a new November entitlement. The service’s residence guidance says a first application normally goes through a competent embassy or consulate. In-country filing is possible in the specified circumstances, including entry with a D visa or lawful visa-free status.
The residence page gives a renewal deadline of at least fifteen days before the existing temporary permission expires. Applicants must establish the relevant residence ground as well as the general conditions, including a passport lasting three months beyond the requested period, support, accommodation, insurance and the applicable health and criminal-record evidence. A marriage alone does not establish that every condition has been met. Identify whether the couple is planning an initial application, renewal or only a visit before selecting the form and arranging travel.
Use the checklist for a spouse who already has residence
The service’s PB-1.3 checklist specifically concerns reunification with a spouse holding residence. It asks for marriage evidence, the sponsor’s identity and residence documentation and evidence of the qualifying status. Listed sponsor situations include permanent residence, EU Blue Card status, qualifying temporary residence of at least one year with prospects of permanent residence, and recognised refugee status. Do not assume that every short temporary grant supports the same application.
The checklist addresses the marriage certificate’s age, with an exception where issued without an expiry limit, and requests a household declaration, financial evidence and other supporting documents. It lists BAM 150 for the temporary-residence application or renewal. One financial-guarantee passage refers to a Bosnian citizen even though the checklist concerns a foreign-resident spouse. Where that wording affects the file, confirm the required guarantor and evidence with the competent field centre before signing a declaration. The uncertainty should be resolved by the receiving authority rather than silently replacing the printed requirement with an invented one.
An invitation supports entry but does not decide residence
The official Entry of Foreigners resource explains that an invitation can help establish the purpose and support for a visit. A Bosnian citizen or permanent foreign resident may issue an invitation, and the page also describes when temporary residents can invite someone for family reunification rather than only a visit. It distinguishes temporary residence exceeding one year from a shorter grant. Check that invitation rule against the sponsor’s documented history.
The service lists BAM 10 for verification of the invitation and requires original or properly certified supporting documents, with translation into an official local language where needed. That charge is separate from the residence fee. For a person requiring a visa, the invitation is not itself the visa; the diplomatic or consular mission issues entry permission. An illustrative couple should therefore complete the relevant invitation and visa stages without assuming they replace a family-residence decision. Nationality, travel-document recognition and the actual purpose of entry still need to be checked before departure.
Follow the payment instructions and the responsible field centre
The service’s Administrative Fees page explains how to complete the payment information: identify the person concerned, state the actual procedure, use the designated Treasury account and the applicable revenue type and municipality code. Its linked tables provide the administrative amounts and codes. Keep the evidence of payment with the file, and distinguish invitation verification from a residence application so that the receiving office can match the payment to the intended service.
The field-centre directory identifies territorial responsibility by municipality. Use it to determine which office should clarify the sponsor-status or guarantee issue and receive an in-country application where that route is available. Preparing the marriage record, passport and sponsor decision early is useful, but documents subject to age limits should remain current when submitted. No universal approval time or all-inclusive cost covering foreign certificates, translations, entry visas and residence is established here. Maintain lawful status during the process, follow the authority’s individual instructions and retain copies of the application and any request for additional evidence.
