A visitor allowance does not renew automatically
Visitors approaching the end of their authorised stay in Botswana should use the extension-of-days service before the relevant period expires. The government service page describes an extension for visitors wishing to remain beyond the ordinary 90-day allowance and expressly directs submission before that period lapses. This is a current procedural guide, not an announcement of a new October amnesty.
The government’s country information describes the ordinary visitor limit as 90 days in a calendar year. Leaving and returning should therefore not be treated as automatically resetting the annual allowance. The Ministry of International Relations likewise directs extension requests to Immigration before visa expiry. A traveller should compare the permission actually endorsed in the passport with the dates already spent in Botswana, rather than assume every entry grants the full annual maximum.
Check whether an entry visa is needed before travel
Botswana’s consular guidance identifies Commonwealth exceptions to visa-free admission: nationals of Bangladesh, Ghana, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Cameroon require a visa. Other exemptions depend on nationality and applicable agreements. Commonwealth membership alone is therefore not a sufficient answer for those passport holders.
The general country guidance requires a passport valid for at least six months unless a specific agreement or stated document exception applies. Use the consular-services page to check the visa category and responsible mission. An extension application by someone already visiting Botswana is a different service from an entry-visa application by someone who has not yet travelled. Neither should be assumed to replace a work or residence permission needed for a different purpose.
Tourism and private visits have different supporting evidence
The government tourism-visa guidance requests certified passport pages showing at least six months of validity, two recent colour photographs, a covering letter, flight and trip itineraries, accommodation bookings, applicable permission to re-enter the country of residence, and evidence of intended departure. It directs online applicants to combine the required documents into one PDF.
The separate visitor-visa page concerns visits to friends or relatives. It requests host evidence including an affidavit and the relevant certified identity or residence documents, relationship certificates for spouses or dependants, and return visa or residence permission where applicable. It also says the visitor must not work, supply services or sell goods to businesses or the public. Select the category matching the actual visit instead of substituting a recreational itinerary for the host documentation.
Resolve the applicable tariff and await the application outcome
The tourism service lists BWP300 for single entry up to one month and BWP500 for multiple entry up to three months. The International Relations consular overview instead summarises tourist visas at BWP500 without that distinction. These published figures should not be silently merged into a single universal charge. Confirm the selected product and payable amount through the official application or responsible mission.
Both visa services point to the government e-visa channel and describe a seven-to-fourteen-day service period, with working days specified in the application steps. Treat this as published guidance rather than an approval guarantee. The visitor page explains how to obtain the approval or rejection letter and says an approved letter can support visa printing at entry if the visa has not already been printed. An application receipt is a different document from that approval.
Prepare the extension file before the existing stay expires
The extension service requires an applicant covering letter explaining the request, a host support letter, a colour passport photograph, certified passport identity evidence and two certified copies of passport movement-stamp pages. It also asks for the host’s certified Omang identity card or the applicable residence or exemption certificate. Use the extension checklist to prepare those documents before attending Immigration.
The service describes completion in three days and issuance of an extension sticker if approved; rejection requires departure. It does not promise that a pending request automatically extends the existing stay or identify a universal extra period granted. For illustration, someone needing more time for a family visit must submit the extension evidence before expiry and follow the decision, rather than relying on a host’s invitation alone. Immigration headquarters, regional offices and district offices provide the service.
