Brazilian visitors to Mexico must match the electronic visa to an air-only journey

The February facility remains limited to arrival by air
Brazilian passport holders planning travel to Mexico should check their transport route before choosing an electronic visa. Mexico’s Foreign Ministry introduced the current electronic facility on 5 February 2026 for one entry by air as a visitor without permission for remunerated activities. This is a current practical guide to that existing arrangement, rather than a new October visa launch or restoration of unrestricted visa-free travel.
The ministry’s announcement says the electronic document supplements the consular visa. A traveller needing a conventional visa for a land or sea arrival must use the appropriate consular procedure unless a separate exemption applies. A flight into a neighbouring country followed by a road crossing into Mexico is consequently not the air-arrival journey covered by the electronic facility. Establish where immigration entry to Mexico actually occurs before paying for the application.
Prepare the digital document file and check every field
The São Paulo consulate’s main visa instructions identify the electronic application requirements: a valid internationally recognised passport or travel document proving Brazilian nationality, the completed online form, a digital facial photograph and an image of the passport identity page. Photograph and passport images must be in the stated JPG, JPEG or PNG formats and below 1.5 MB; the photograph must have a white background and show the applicant without glasses.
The page directs payment of US$10 by Visa or Mastercard credit or debit card and describes 180-day document validity with a single entry. Use the linked official Visa Electrónica portal for the application. The consulate recommends cancelling and applying again where the electronic document contains errors, using its cancellation guidance. Check names, passport details and travel-document validity before relying on the result for boarding; the published validity is not a promise that every visitor will receive the longest possible stay.
Some existing foreign documents remove the Mexican visa requirement
The consulate’s separate visa FAQ identifies exemptions involving qualifying permanent residence in Canada, the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom, Schengen countries, Colombia or Chile. It also identifies qualifying current multiple-entry visas for Canada, the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom or Schengen countries. A temporary residence document should not be assumed equivalent to permanent residence for this purpose.
A Brazilian holding one of those documents should check the precise category and its validity for the journey before submitting a new Mexican visa application. The FAQ is the resource for that exemption check; residence in Brazil alone does not give another nationality access to the Brazilian electronic facility. The same guidance preserves consular applications for students, residence applicants and people needing multiple entries or whose electronic application has been refused.
Border admission still requires a credible visit
Mexico City’s tourism authority describes the electronic document as a digital authorisation with a QR code checked by airlines. It identifies tourism, transit and business visits without paid work among the intended short-visit uses. Its publicity about faster processing should not be treated as a guaranteed decision time for a particular application or as permission to begin employment in Mexico.
The Mexican consulate in Quetzaltenango’s entry FAQ explains the separate border stage: immigration officers may ask for additional documents according to the purpose of travel, and consular visa issuance does not guarantee admission. Prepare evidence that explains the real itinerary and purpose, and follow the immigration instructions given at entry. An electronic visa authorises use of the specified visa route; it does not prevent an officer from checking whether the traveller meets admission conditions.
Allow time for a consular alternative where necessary
The São Paulo FAQ requires appointments for consular visa applicants, including children, through the official Citas service. Applicants should use the checklist for their category and the consular office handling the application, rather than assume the shorter electronic-upload checklist also satisfies a residence or student visa application. This is particularly relevant when changing plans from one air visit to repeated trips or a land-border itinerary.
There is no universal application deadline established by the reviewed resources beyond obtaining the required document before travel and respecting its validity. The useful sequence is to check any exemption first, identify the entry mode, prepare the corresponding file and obtain the decision before committing to an itinerary that depends on it. If a required category or supporting document remains unclear, use the consulate’s named guidance and appointment procedure to resolve it before departure.
