Choose the purpose before relying on a visitor exemption
Brunei-bound travellers should establish whether their journey is a social visit, a business visit or employment before relying on a nationality exemption. The Foreign Ministry FAQ distinguishes professional, business and short-social visit visas and explains that a visa is permission to enter rather than the stay pass itself. This is current procedural guidance checked on 29 October 2026, not an announcement of a newly introduced work restriction.
The distinction matters for someone attending meetings, joining an employer or accompanying a worker. A passport entitlement to a short tourist visit does not establish permission for every activity. Use the Foreign Ministry category information to identify the purpose first, then check the issuing mission checklist. The period for using a visa and the stay recorded on admission should also be checked separately.
Business applications may need action by a Brunei company
The Foreign Ministry Category C1 guidance says a business-visit visa is for investment or business-related activity and should be applied for by a registered business or government-linked company in Brunei on the visitor behalf. It directs applications to the Visa and Diplomatic Section of the Immigration and National Registration Department. Use that resource to identify the local organization role rather than assume the visitor alone can complete every step abroad.
The same category page describes arrival visas for passports in that category, including single or multiple entry and 30-day duration, with BND20 or BND30 charges respectively. Those category-specific figures do not establish a universal entitlement for all passports or a complete employment-permit price. Check the nationality category and purpose together before relying on an arrival application instead of an advance visa.
Employment requires approval before arrival
The Foreign Ministry FAQ says foreign nationals entering for employment must have the appropriate visa and employment pass before arrival. It also identifies dependant passes for spouses and children under 18 of pass holders. Families should therefore confirm each person route rather than assume that a principal worker approval automatically covers accompanying relatives.
The Brunei embassy Washington visa instructions reinforce that employment visas are not granted without a valid Labour Department work permit and that visitors cannot undertake full-time or part-time work without immigration permission. For illustration, an individual travelling to start a paid role should obtain the employer permit evidence before departing, even if the same passport would allow a holiday without a visa. This example does not decide eligibility for a particular job or employer.
Documents and timing depend on the receiving mission
The Washington checklist requires an original completed application, passport, recent passport photograph, a letter explaining the visit and itinerary information. Business travellers also need a company invitation. Its passport instructions require six months validity beyond intended entry and six unmarked pages. US permanent residents using that mission must include copies of both sides of their residence card. Use the mission checklist for an application lodged there, rather than generalize every local submission detail worldwide.
The embassy describes normal processing as seven working days, with referred applications taking at least a month. The ministry general FAQ gives a shorter one-to-three-working-day estimate, so a traveller should plan around the actual issuing office and any referral rather than assume the fastest published figure applies. This review does not establish one guaranteed processing time or universal fee in foreign currency for every applicant.
Arrival declarations and the admission record remain necessary
Brunei immigration e-Arrival Card FAQ states that registration is free and requires the passport or individual travel document, accommodation information and flight or vehicle details. It exempts transit passengers who do not pass through immigration. Complete the applicable declaration through the official service before travelling, using the real transport and address details; it is not a substitute for the business or employment permission.
UK entry guidance for British citizen passports confirms a visitor exemption of up to 90 days, but directs work, study, business and longer-stay travellers to the appropriate requirements. It also requires six months passport validity from arrival and an entry stamp, and says land and sea border posts are not open around the clock. Before departure, confirm the purpose-specific approval, mission documents and border arrangements; after admission, check the actual stay deadline rather than assume the nationality maximum was granted.
