Cameroon requires the resident sponsor to apply for family reunification

Cameroon distinguishes a short family accompaniment application from family reunification. The resident sponsor, relationship evidence, accommodation and resources determine the appropriate procedure.

Identify who must make the family application

Cameroon’s March 2023 implementing decree distinguishes family accompaniment from family reunification. Article 52 places the reunification application with the foreign relative already admitted to stay or resident in Cameroon, through immigration services. Involve the sponsor before making an overseas visa request. This describes the existing framework, not a new November route.

The decree identifies spouses, minor children, adult children still studying and first-degree ascendants among qualifying family members. It requires proof of the family link and describes housing and stable, sufficient resources for the relative already in Cameroon. By contrast, accompaniment for no more than three months is requested by the visiting foreign family member through the competent diplomatic or consular mission. Ask the mission which procedure matches the intended duration; eligibility does not eliminate the need for a decision.

Prepare documents for the accompanying spouse or child

The Cameroon embassy in Japan publishes a long-stay visa checklist that includes evidence of marriage for a spouse or parentage for minor children. It also identifies a passport valid for more than six months, travel documentation to Cameroon, required international vaccination certificates and a repatriation deposit. Use that official checklist to discuss the dossier with the competent mission, while confirming the deposit arrangements and any additional evidence for the actual case.

For minors and infants, the embassy lists legalised parental authorisation, the travelling parent’s or guardian’s passport information page, flight itineraries and evidence such as a birth certificate establishing the relationship. These child-travel papers serve a different purpose from showing the sponsor’s residence position. The embassy also requires separate JPEG scans and says photographs of documents and screenshots are not accepted. Prepare readable files individually and check names and passport details before submission. Do not extrapolate its marriage-and-minor-child visa list into a complete checklist for an adult student child or parent.

Budget for the visa separately from reunification approval

MINREX’s official e-visa guide publishes CFA150,000 for an ordinary long-stay visa of up to twelve months and CFA200,000 for the express category. Those visa prices are not a verified combined quotation for sponsorship, residence documents, a repatriation deposit and every family member’s formalities. Ask for an itemised official calculation based on the chosen category and each applicant.

The ministry describes online pre-enrolment through its linked evisacam platforms, account creation, completion of required fields, separate supporting-document uploads and review before payment. It publishes normal and express handling stages of 72 and 24 hours respectively after pre-enrolment. Those figures should not be presented as a guaranteed deadline for the separate family-reunification decision. The same page says diplomatic and courtesy visas remain free at the payment stage; ordinary family applicants should not assume that travelling with a sponsor creates that status. Confirm the required route before paying for expedited handling.

Check entry evidence and resolve status questions locally

The UK’s official Cameroon entry advice, expressly directed to British-citizen passport holders, says the passport must remain valid for at least six months after arrival and that yellow-fever vaccination evidence is required. A British member of a relocating family should check both before travel. The advice warns that passports reported lost or stolen are not valid travel documents, even if subsequently recovered. Resolve that issue before booking. For other nationalities, obtain the competent Cameroonian mission’s specific instructions rather than assume the UK passport guidance answers every case.

The UK resource also tells travellers to obtain a border stamp and directs questions about immigration status inside Cameroon to the General Delegation for National Security in Yaoundé, on +237 22221 2884. Keep the entry evidence with the sponsor’s and relationship documents when following up. Neither the cited family provisions nor the ministry’s visa guide supplies a universal reunification-processing guarantee, so secure the applicable decision and written instructions before treating relocation arrangements as settled.
