The May online-visa rule remains important for current travel

Travellers requiring permission to enter Chad should check the immigration directorate’s electronic-visa notice before relying on a manually issued entry authorisation. The notice introduced mandatory online applications from May 11, 2026 and says visas issued outside that platform after May 21 are invalid, while visas regularly issued before the cutoff remain valid until expiry. This is a current guide to that existing change, not a new October launch.

The directorate says the platform covers visa categories except diplomatic and courtesy visas, which remain the Foreign Ministry’s responsibility. It also says manual entry authorisations have been abolished. The notice is therefore more specific about the application channel than general travel pages that still refer readers to an embassy. Applicants should ask the responsible mission or immigration service to resolve any conflicting instruction rather than assume an emailed invitation or older manual permission is enough to board.

Prepare a category-specific file rather than every listed document

The official e-visa service asks for a valid passport’s biographical page in digital form and the previous visa when extending a stay. Its document prompts also identify accommodation, transport, funds and invitations, with additional employment, company or organisation evidence depending on the purpose. An NGO agreement or work contract listed in the service is not necessarily a requirement for every tourist: select the actual category and follow the resulting request.

Use the service’s application-reference check to follow the file, and keep its decision with the passport used in the application. The portal also publishes a visa-exempt nationality list; exemption should be checked against that list and the traveller’s actual passport rather than inferred from regional proximity. Although the May notice refers to revised tariffs, an independently verified current category-by-category amount was not established for this report. Confirm the charge in the official application before payment rather than using an old agent’s quotation.

Allow time and read the arrival stamp immediately

Germany’s Foreign Office tells German nationals to apply online at least seven days before departure. That is a planning instruction, not a guaranteed processing time. Its advice also says officers at N’Djamena airport may stamp a requirement to register with the responsible police station within 24 hours. Someone receiving that instruction should act on it immediately instead of assuming every visitor has a longer period.

The UK’s entry guidance describes police registration for stays exceeding 72 hours and tells British travellers to bring a passport photograph to the Commissariat Central. These official summaries are not identical. The safest practical course is to inspect the entry endorsement, ask the immigration officer which registration applies, and comply with the earliest explicit instruction given for the individual entry. Registration is a separate action after admission; completing the online visa process should not be treated as completing a police-reporting obligation.

Nationality restrictions and route conditions remain separate

The US State Department says Chad is not routinely issuing visas to US citizens and that visas are unavailable on arrival. An operational online application form therefore does not establish that an American applicant will receive permission. Its guidance also calls for first-time tourists and humanitarian workers to obtain a National Police registration stamp within 72 hours, and identifies additional registration when a new passport is issued. Americans should use that resource and the Chadian mission to establish their position before committing to travel.

The same US resource advises against travel and warns that government permission is needed for border zones near Libya and Sudan. Germany’s guidance reports the Sudan border closed since February 23, 2026. France’s entry guidance recommends arrival by air at N’Djamena and says travellers should carry passports for intercity journeys, with a mission order strongly recommended for professional travel. None of those documents makes a closed or restricted land route available. Verify visa approval, the actual route and any separate travel permission as distinct decisions before departure.
