Identify which stage of residence applies

Chile’s temporary residence system uses an electronic document, the Estampado Electrónico, to evidence permission. An applicant preparing to travel, a resident awaiting renewal and someone who has just received a grant face different deadlines. This current guide explains those existing procedures; it does not describe a newly announced immigration concession.

The National Migration Service, SERMIG, says the electronic document replaces a physical passport stamp as evidence of temporary resident status and includes the holder’s identity, residence category and expiry date. Use the dedicated electronic-permit guidance to establish how a grant is delivered or downloaded. An approval notification, a payment request and the final residence evidence should not be treated as interchangeable documents.

Overseas grants have a download clock followed by an entry clock

For temporary residence granted through an overseas application, SERMIG gives 120 working days from the grant notification to download the electronic permit. After download, the holder has ninety calendar days to enter Chile. These are sequential deadlines using different units, rather than one period beginning from whichever event the traveller prefers.

The official FAQ explains that permission granted from abroad becomes effective from entry into Chile. For an illustrative applicant who downloads early but travels several months later, the relevant question is whether entry still falls within the ninety-calendar-day window. Keeping the original email without checking the download and entry dates does not establish compliance. Confirm any exceptional case through SERMIG before making non-refundable arrangements.

Domestic grants and payment use a different procedure

The electronic-permit guidance says applications made in Chile from 14 May 2022, including the stated cases where permanent residence is refused but temporary residence is granted, receive the electronic document automatically at the declared email address. Where payment is required, delivery follows payment of the relevant rights. The page gives 180 calendar days to make that payment.

Use the subsection matching the location and date of the application rather than the overseas download instructions. Older domestic applications and successful administrative appeals have their own listed routes. Check the grant details and the email address registered in the case, and retain the payment and issued document. The instructions do not mean that every applicant can choose freely between a domestic and overseas procedure.

Renewal requires evidence that the original conditions continue

SERMIG’s renewal page describes a request maintaining the same residence subcategory and quality. It is available from inside Chile through the digital portal, using ClaveÚnica or the account created for the procedure. The dedicated page describes the final ninety days before expiry as the renewal window; the FAQ additionally states a minimum ten-day advance period. Applicants should plan within those limits rather than leave filing until expiry.

The renewal checklist requires identity evidence, the existing electronic permission or relevant visa and entry evidence, the Chilean identity card, applicable adult criminal-record evidence and a recent photograph. Further documents depend on the subcategory. Employed and self-employed workers have different evidence requirements. Use the relevant subsection to show that the conditions supporting the original grant remain satisfied, rather than merely re-upload an old contract.

The page also sets document recency, translation and authentication requirements. A criminal-record document that was acceptable for the original application may no longer be current. Assemble the new evidence before the filing window closes; an account draft is not the same as a submitted renewal.

Confirm charges and travel evidence through the official resources

SERMIG’s tariff page, updated on 1 October 2026, directs temporary residence applicants to charges according to nationality. Use that table and the payment notification applicable to the case rather than a general permanent-residence price. The reviewed guidance does not establish one universal temporary residence charge for every applicant.

The FAQ says a residence-application certificate can evidence regular status and permit exit and entry for the specified renewal, subcategory-change and dependent-to-principal procedures, including where the permission expires during processing. Check that the actual pending application and certificate fall within that guidance before travelling. Do not assume an application for a different purpose has the same effect.

The practical sequence is to record the grant or expiry date, identify the correct procedure, complete its document and payment requirements and retain the issued evidence. These resources do not guarantee an individual decision date or excuse missing a deadline merely because another stage remains pending.
