Colombia digital-nomad applicants must separate income evidence, visa fees and lawful stay

Current visitor-visa guidance restricts local paid work and requires financial and health evidence; submitting an application does not itself extend admission.

Remote work for overseas clients is the relevant distinction

Colombia’s visitor visa for digital nomads is intended for remote services to foreign companies or a qualifying digital or information-technology venture. The foreign ministry’s current category guidance prohibits paid activity for a person or company domiciled in Colombia. This is an explanation of the existing visa, not a new November announcement. An applicant should establish who pays for the work before assuming that any online role fits the category.

The category page requires bank statements demonstrating income equivalent to three current statutory monthly minimum wages during the preceding three months, together with the specified employment or business evidence. It also requires health coverage in Colombia for the intended period, including the listed risks such as accident, illness, hospitalisation and repatriation. The visa can be granted for up to two years, rather than guaranteeing that duration in every case. Use the category page to check the required coverage and professional evidence, and confirm that the passport falls within the eligible short-stay visa-exempt nationalities.

General application documents still apply to the digital route

The ministry’s common-requirements page is a separate resource for preparing the online file. It should be read alongside the digital-nomad conditions rather than replaced by a client letter alone. In particular, someone applying through a Colombian consulate outside their home country must provide evidence of regular stay in that consulate’s country. Physical convenience does not establish consular jurisdiction.

The ministry’s general visa instructions and online application guide explain submission through the official visa platform. Keep the passport information, current location and supporting documents consistent throughout the record. For an illustrative freelancer temporarily visiting another country, the first question is whether they can document lawful stay and use that consular office, rather than whether the office offers a convenient payment channel. If the authority requests additional evidence, respond through the required process and retain the case reference. A commercial service’s acceptance of documents is not a decision by the Colombian visa authority.

Study and issuance are separate charges with specific exceptions

The ministry’s category-specific cost selector lists the digital-nomad visitor visa at USD56 for study and USD183 for issuance in Colombia and the rest-of-world tariff group. For Europe and Cuba it lists EUR44 for study and EUR141 for issuance. These are two stages, so payment of the assessment charge should not be described as purchase of an approved visa. Use the selector for the actual category and processing location before arranging payment.

The same official cost resource identifies nationality exceptions. It says Spanish nationals are exempt from both study and issuance charges, while Japanese and Korean nationals are exempt from issuance but pay the study charge applicable to the category. Such fee concessions do not establish exemption from eligibility or supporting evidence. The page also identifies official payment routes and directs overseas applicants to the relevant consulate for local arrangements. Avoid using a tariff displayed for an investor or another visitor category simply because it appears on the same website.

Processing time must be planned alongside the current permission to stay

The foreign ministry’s visa FAQ states that the authority has up to 30 calendar days to respond after payment for the application study. It separately describes electronic issuance within ten working days after payment of the rights for an approved visa. These periods answer different questions: the first concerns assessment and the second production of an approved document. Neither is a guarantee that an application will be approved before a flight or accommodation booking.

The ministry’s legal compilation says an applicant already in Colombia must remain in regular immigration status throughout processing, under a valid visa, stay permission or applicable safe-conduct document. Filing a visa request is therefore not, by itself, evidence of an extended stay. Compare the expiry of current admission with the possible assessment period before starting the process. If there is a gap, establish the appropriate immigration procedure with the responsible authority rather than assume the pending visa resolves it. Keep the study receipt, any request for further evidence, approval and issued e-visa as separate records: they mark different stages and should not be treated interchangeably.
