October amendments change the Australian visitor category

Australian citizens travelling on Australian passports are now eligible for up to ninety days in the Cook Islands on arrival, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Immigration’s 21 October 2026 announcement. The ministry says the Immigration Amendment Regulations 2026 are in force. Its accompanying FAQ identifies approval on 13 October and commencement during October, without giving a more precise commencement day in that answer.

The change brings Australians within visitor arrangements previously available to New Zealand citizens. It replaces the earlier thirty-one-day arrival period for Australian passport holders. This is an October change with practical consequences for longer holidays, rather than a general extension of every foreign visitor’s allowance.

The announcement also provides more flexible one-, two- or three-year Government and International Worker permits and alignment of specified family permissions with the principal holder. Those are separate provisions: the longer Australian holiday allowance does not itself authorise employment.

Eligibility follows the passport, not residence in Australia

The ministry’s current Immigration FAQ states that only New Zealand or Australian passport holders qualify for the corresponding visitor category. A person holding Australian permanent residence but travelling on another nationality’s passport should therefore not assume the new ninety-day arrival permission applies.

The FAQ continues to describe thirty-one-day arrival permission for other international passport holders. For illustration, two relatives travelling from Sydney on different national passports may fall within different visitor categories despite sharing a flight and accommodation. Check each traveller’s passport and actual admission before arranging a common departure date.

The same FAQ asks visitors seeking extension to provide a valid passport, onward travel, accommodation information, sufficient funds, a genuine visitor purpose and health and character declarations. It warns that an incomplete request will not be considered. Prepare the evidence before the current permission runs out.

Use the reduced fee for the correct extension

The ministry’s fee schedule, updated on 20 October, lists NZD 235 for a New Zealand or Australian visitor extension and NZD 115 for an international visitor extension. The October announcement compares those amounts with the previous NZD 470 charge. The reductions concern different extension periods and should not be treated as identical products.

The visa-and-permit criteria describe the New Zealand or Australian extension as a further three months, while the international visitor extension is a further thirty-one days. They state that arrival permits in both categories carry no fee. A traveller should not confuse the paid extension with the original border permission.

For a longer stay, review the separate long-term visitor category. Its criteria include health insurance for the full permission and different limits. Paying the ordinary extension fee should not be assumed to produce the maximum possible visitor stay.

Apply before expiry and check the documents for the longer itinerary

The UK government’s Cook Islands entry guide tells British visitors to apply at least two weeks before their visa or permit expires. Its British passport guidance requires six months of validity beyond intended departure and two blank pages. A longer holiday can therefore change the relevant passport-validity calculation even if the initial journey was compliant.

That guide also requires onward or return travel, permission for the next destination where needed and accommodation evidence. Anyone entering to join a yacht or another sea-going vessel should check the separate entry-permission requirement identified there. The new Australian stay allowance does not remove onward-country or vessel-related formalities.

Prepare the online submission and retain access to the account

The ministry’s Online Visa Applications guide directs applications through ASYPX, where users create an account, upload supporting documents, pay and track progress. It specifies PDF uploads with a maximum file size of 680 kilobytes. Check that compression leaves passport and supporting records readable; an uploaded file is useful only if the officer can assess it.

The guide distinguishes a successful payment status from later verification and processing. Keep the application reference and monitor requests instead of assuming a card transaction is approval. It also says a stay of six months or more requires a medical clearance letter from the Cook Islands Ministry of Health.

Before requesting more time, identify the existing permit’s expiry, the proposed new departure and the applicable nationality category. Those three facts determine which official criteria and charge to use. Where an older downloaded form still prints an earlier fee, check the updated ministry schedule before payment.
