Cyprus residence renewals use different online filing windows for workers and families

Identify the permit category before starting a renewal

Third-country residents preparing a Cyprus permit renewal should check both their residence category and the expiry date before opening the online service. Current Migration Department instructions allow general-employment and domestic-work renewals from 60 to 30 days before expiry. Foreign-interest-company employees, long-term residents and eligible family-reunification applicants have a different window, from 90 to 30 days before expiry. This is a current practical guide to the operating service, not an announcement that every residence application has moved online.

The department expressly excludes people residing as family members of Cypriot citizens or EU, EEA or Brexit citizens from this online renewal service. A family relationship alone therefore does not identify the correct channel. Check the legal basis shown on the existing permission. Someone approaching the final 30-day margin should resolve access and documentary problems immediately rather than wait until the card’s last week of validity.

A verified account is required even when someone assists

The government’s dedicated renewal-service page lists the five supported streams and requires a verified CY Login account. It allows submission by the employee or permit holder, the employer, or an authorised agent acting on their behalf. The account requirement is therefore part of access to the service, rather than evidence that a lawyer must be hired or that an employer can renew any category without authority.

Use the named Gov.cy renewal service to reach the application, rather than a search advertisement claiming to issue permits. Its page separately identifies CY Login support and the responsible Migration Department contact. This distinction matters when an account problem prevents entry to the portal: technical support can address access, while the migration authority must clarify eligibility, documentary requirements or an approaching deadline. Creating an account should not be confused with submitting the renewal itself.

General employment has its own fees and biometric stage

For the general-employment single-permit category, the department lists EUR130 for issuance or renewal of residence and work permission valid for one to three years. The EUR70 Aliens Register charge applies only to first registration. Its separate EUR120 entry-and-residence/work category should not automatically be used as the price for an ordinary renewal. The applicable application type determines the payment.

The same guidance requires photograph, fingerprints and signature, including for renewals; biometrics can be taken at the relevant police district immigration unit as described in the instructions. Online filing therefore does not establish that every physical step disappears. The stated four-month examination period can increase when documents are missing. For contracts, the department distinguishes agreements signed on or after 1 January 2026, which are no longer subject to stamp duty, from pre-2026 agreements remaining under the former regime.

Document authentication remains a substantive requirement

The Migration Department’s document-ratification resource requires Greek or English documents, or an accepted official translation into one of those languages. It explains apostille authentication for public documents from participating states and diplomatic authentication where that convention route does not apply. Requested copies also require the prescribed certification. Scanning a document for upload does not itself authenticate it.

Use that resource before commissioning translations or obtaining a foreign criminal-record certificate, and compare it with the checklist for the precise renewal category. A stamp associated with an employment contract and authentication of a foreign public document perform different functions. Removal of contract stamp duty does not remove the separate translation and authentication instructions. Keep legible copies and the originals needed for any later verification.

First entry and a change of employment need separate checks

The European Commission’s employed-worker guide describes the underlying recruitment route: the employer approaches the Labour Department, the vacancy is assessed against available local or European labour, and the employment file includes the contract, valid passport, criminal-record evidence and medical examination. These initial-entry requirements should not be copied indiscriminately into a renewal checklist, but they explain why possession of a visitor visa does not establish ordinary work permission.

The Commission also explains that employment permission is tied to a specific employer. A resident changing jobs should obtain current Migration and Labour Department instructions on the change rather than assume an online renewal transfers sponsorship. The immediate sequence is to identify the existing category, calculate its filing window, verify portal access, assemble the correct authenticated evidence and complete any required biometric appointment. No source reviewed guarantees approval merely because an application and payment have been accepted online.
