Foreign students in Cyprus must complete their first semester before taking approved work

Current Labour Department guidance links employment to second-semester enrolment, an approved contract and a student permit allowing economic activity.

Check the student’s eligibility before agreeing a start date

The Cyprus Labour Department’s current Greek guidance requires third-country students to attend a recognised institution and full-time programme, have completed their first semester and be enrolled in the second. The valid student residence permit must expressly allow economic activity. These are existing conditions.

The department must check and stamp the specific employer’s contract with the study timetable. Work must be outside classes, with weekly limits of twenty hours during term and thirty-eight during breaks. Employment applications go only through the online foreign-labour service; the employer’s social-insurance registration must be linked to CY Login. Check these conditions before agreeing a first shift.

Resolve the older English instructions before relying on them

The department’s English page still describes a December 2024 decree restricted to students already in Cyprus by 1 December 2024. It also describes submission to a district office, while the current Greek page directs employment applications online and links a 2026 decree. A newly arrived student should not treat that older English arrival cutoff as a complete statement of current eligibility, nor assume that an old paper filing route remains available.

The English resource remains useful for identifying supporting evidence: a valid student permit, a contract signed by both parties, confirmation of full-time study and a timetable or holiday-confirmation letter. Ask the Labour Department to confirm the current document list and whether the proposed occupation appears in the applicable decree. For degree-required internships, the English page additionally identifies a written agreement between the employer and recognised institution. The published permission is limited to specified activities; it is not unrestricted access to every job. That internship reference does not, by itself, authorise an unrelated part-time job or replace confirmation of the present approval procedure.

Keep the student residence application and renewal in order

The European Commission’s official Cyprus student portal explains that non-EU students need a visa or entry permit before arrival and temporary residence permission afterwards. Admission to a recognised institution, financial resources, health insurance, a criminal-record certificate and passport evidence form part of the residence documentation. On arrival, the portal also identifies police registration and medical checks as required steps. The residence route is for full-time students, not every person attending a short course.

The portal describes one-year residence permission, renewable with an application one month before expiry. Its arrival instructions inconsistently mention both one week and ten days. Contact the institution and Migration Department immediately about the applicable arrival procedure instead of treating the later wording as a safe grace period. Maintaining the residence file matters even when the immediate concern is employment: a pending job application does not itself renew student status. Use the Commission portal for the residence process and the Labour Department resources for permission to work. These are related procedures with different evidence and decisions.

Budget for residence fees and check permission before travel

The Migration Department’s student information lists €55 for issuing or renewing student residence permission and €70 for first registration in the Aliens Register. Its combined entry, residence and initial registration application costs €140; other combinations have different charges. These are immigration application fees, not an advertised price for finding employment or certifying a particular job. Confirm the combination applicable to the file before paying.

The same resource gives up to three months for examination of a duly completed residence application and describes annually renewable permission, subject to continuing conditions and sufficient academic progress. It also explains that, while an application remains undecided, re-entry can be supported by the application-fee receipt bearing a re-entry stamp. A payment receipt without that endorsement should not automatically be treated as a travel document. Before leaving Cyprus, check the passport, current permit and any necessary re-entry endorsement with the Migration Department; employment approval does not resolve that separate border requirement. Duly completed entry-permit applications have a separate one-month examination period, distinct from residence processing.
