An existing residence route with a wage-linked threshold
Ecuador offers a temporary residence category for foreign remote workers and owners of businesses registered abroad. This current guide concerns an established route, rather than a newly announced October visa. Article 64 of the mobility regulation covers remote services for employers, clients or companies domiciled outside Ecuador. Applicants should demonstrate that overseas relationship instead of treating possession of a laptop as sufficient evidence.
Eligibility still depends on the individual application and supporting evidence. Someone intending to take a conventional local job should consult the Foreign Ministry temporary-residence category directory, which lists employment and other routes separately. Selecting the remote-worker category does not establish eligibility for an unrelated employment arrangement.
Calculate the requirement using the current basic wage
The regulation requires foreign-source income of at least three unified basic salaries per month during the three months preceding the application, or a total of 36 basic salaries per year. International account statements must show the income. The Labour Ministry set the 2026 basic salary at USD482 from 1 January, replacing USD470 in 2025.
Applying those official figures gives USD1,446 monthly or USD17,352 annually for 2026, compared with USD1,410 monthly or USD16,920 annually using the previous wage. These are calculations from the wage-linked rule, not separately announced fixed visa prices. Applicants relying on older dollar examples should recalculate before preparing their statements. For illustration, an income figure satisfying the 2025 monthly calculation may fall below the 2026 calculation even though the visa category itself has not changed.
Prepare identity, criminal-record and insurance evidence
The official procedure specifies a recent colour photograph, a passport with at least six months of validity, and an original criminal-record certificate from the country of origin or countries of residence during the previous five years. Required translation, apostille or legalisation must be addressed. The criminal-record requirement applies to applicants over 18; federal certificates must cover national records. Check the detailed certificate-validity wording before ordering or translating documents.
The regulation also requires supporting evidence of the overseas work or business and health insurance for the visa period. A foreign policy must explicitly cover Ecuador. It refers to the rentista provisions for insurance and additional income of USD250 monthly for each sponsored person. Do not assume that the principal applicant’s income calculation alone completes a family application.
Separate the application payment from the visa charge
The live procedure lists USD50 for the application and USD270 for granting the visa, without VAT. The consular tariff provides a 50 percent concession for people aged 65 or over in Ecuador and a full concession there for people with disability of at least 30 percent presenting the specified Ecuadorian Health Ministry disability card. Confirm how an applicable concession is recorded before paying.
The Foreign Ministry e-Visas information page directs applicants to its official digital service, available online without an appointment. It distinguishes temporary residence from visitor and permanent residence applications and explains card payment. Use that ministry page to enter the service rather than an intermediary’s payment link. Its online availability concerns access to filing, not an assurance of immediate approval.
Watch both the payment cutoff and the post-approval task
The procedure warns that an unpaid application is deleted if the first payment is not completed by 23:55 Ecuador time on the day of filing. Plan the submission around the payment method and retain confirmation. Someone filing inside Ecuador must also demonstrate regular immigration status; an online account alone does not establish that status.
Article 64 additionally requires the documents supporting an electronic visa to be sent physically to the issuing authority within one month after issuance, with cancellation consequences for non-compliance or discrepancies. Confirm delivery instructions with that authority. The Public Defender’s residence guidance distinguishes temporary residence, generally lasting up to two years, from permanent residence. Neither a successful remote-work application nor its advertised duration should be read as an automatic permanent-residence decision.
