Check the current service alert before sending a passport

Egypt’s Consulate General in Sydney currently states that a technical issue is preventing it from issuing visas. Its published notice directs Australian-passport holders towards visa on arrival, identifies the official electronic-visa portal and provides Melbourne consular assistance as alternatives. The notice does not give an outage starting date or a restoration deadline. This is a current service-status guide, not a claim that the interruption began today.

Applicants should therefore confirm how their case will be handled before posting an original passport or travelling to lodge papers in Sydney. The alert gives Melbourne’s consular email as [email protected] and its telephone as (03) 9614 1888. It does not say that every nationality or travel document can substitute an arrival visa. Identify the actual passport and purpose first, particularly where the normal consular procedure requires approval from Egypt.

Prior-approval applicants cannot assume an airport substitute

Sydney’s Category C instructions cover listed nationalities and holders of travel documents requiring pre-approval. Examples on its list include Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, Sri Lanka and Yemen. This is a consular screening category, and applicants should read the complete list and confirm any alternative online eligibility rather than assume Australian residence itself creates an Australian-passport entitlement.

The Category C page lists the completed visa form, passport or travel document valid for at least six months from intended entry, Australian visa evidence, a recent bank statement and applicable employment, study and previous-Egypt-visa evidence. Documents are uploaded as PDFs. It describes referral to Egypt, approximately two months for a decision, possible delays, and submission of the original travel document and fee after approval. Ask the mission how the technical interruption affects those stages; the published estimate is not a guarantee or authority to travel before approval.

Egyptian-origin cases have their own documentary fee exemption

The consulate’s Category B guidance addresses people travelling on a foreign passport who are Egyptian or have an Egyptian parent or spouse. It describes a consular fee waiver where the prescribed evidence is available: the applicant’s valid Egyptian national identity card or passport, or the relevant birth or marriage certificate together with the parent’s or spouse’s valid Egyptian identity document.

The ordinary file also includes the completed application, photograph and original foreign passport with the stated validity. Someone without the required origin evidence is directed to the appropriate other visa category. A family connection should therefore not be treated as an automatic exemption based on a name or an unverified claim. During the issuance interruption, use this page to identify the evidence but obtain current mission instructions before relying on its normal lodging or collection arrangements.

Eligible electronic-visa applicants should check the official list and fee

The Ministry of Interior’s e-visa FAQ lists eligible nationalities, including Australia, and the tourism fees: US$30 for single entry and US$65 for multiple entries. Online eligibility is checked on that official list, separately from Sydney’s consular categories. Where the published routes appear to overlap or differ for a nationality, ask the responsible authority which applies to the particular passport and trip rather than treating one list as a universal rule.

The FAQ’s entry checklist requires a passport valid for at least six months after arrival, the printed electronic visa, an itinerary and the relevant accommodation or supporting invitation information. An electronic visa does not guarantee admission; the port authorities retain the entry decision. Use visa2egypt.gov.eg for the official application and download, and retain the approved document rather than only a payment receipt.

Allow the online lead time and wait for the application result

The official portal’s home page instructs travellers to create the electronic-visa application at least seven days before departure. It describes registering an email account, entering the application and paying by an accepted card, followed by processing and an email showing the application status. That seven-day instruction is a minimum planning lead, not a promise that every case will be approved on the seventh day.

Applicants with an imminent flight should establish a lawful alternative with the consulate and carrier rather than assume an unfinished online application will be accepted. Keep access to the registered inbox and check the status and issued permission before travel. The practical decision is between an eligible online or arrival route and the consular procedure required for the actual case; the Sydney outage does not erase nationality, document or purpose restrictions.
