Eritrean passport applicants should use their receiving embassy’s document and payment instructions

Mission checklists differ on photographs, identity evidence and replacement fees. A renewal file prepared for one country should not be assumed complete elsewhere.

New Delhi publishes a checklist but no numerical passport fee

Eritrean citizens abroad preparing a passport application should identify their receiving mission before obtaining photographs or arranging payment. This guide compares existing mission instructions. The New Delhi passport page asks for a completed application, scanned Eritrean identity card or birth certificate, four white-background photographs measuring 35 by 45 millimetres, any previous passport and evidence of lawful residence.

The Indian mission describes photographs taken within six months and says additional documents may be requested. It says the embassy will communicate payment instructions and the passport fee after approval. Its processing-time heading contains no actual duration. A reader should therefore ask for the applicable charge and timetable rather than fill the gap with another embassy’s price. For a lost or damaged passport, the page directs applicants to contact the mission immediately for specific instructions.

Washington distinguishes an expired passport from a lost one

The Washington embassy’s published passport requirements give separate US-dollar categories. For applicants aged 18 or over, first issuance or replacement of an old handwritten passport is listed at US$200; replacement for loss or damage is also US$200; replacement because of expiry or exhausted pages is US$100. The corresponding under-18 amounts are US$150, US$150 and US$75. These distinctions explain why asking simply for a replacement price can produce the wrong category.

That document requires three photographs, an Eritrean national identity card for adults, a permanent-residence-card copy, birth-certificate copy and recovery-and-rehabilitation tax clearance. It specifies a non-refundable money order or cashier’s cheque payable to the embassy and a prepaid tracked return envelope for mailing the complete package. The file is labelled as 2021 requirements, so ask Washington to confirm that the category, amount and postal arrangements remain applicable before sending payment. These US instructions do not establish New Delhi’s fee or acceptable payment method.

The Nordic checklist uses different photograph and surrender rules

The Stockholm embassy’s passport PDF addresses applicants in Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland. It requests an Eritrean identity card, local population-registration evidence, four photographs and the mother’s Eritrean identity card. It also refers to satisfying national obligations, including its stated two-percent payment requirement. This describes the embassy’s published evidence requirement; the document does not establish an individual tax calculation or prove that a particular person has an outstanding liability.

Its photograph rule is more restrictive than New Delhi’s: the 35 by 45 millimetre image must have been taken within one month. For replacement, it says the old passport stays with the consular representative until the new document arrives and is then cancelled. The PDF lists new-passport amounts of SEK2,000 for adults and SEK1,550 for minors, and replacement amounts of SEK2,450 and SEK2,000 respectively. Its publication date was not established. Confirm current payment and document-retention arrangements before relying on those figures or planning travel that requires the old passport.

Resolve missing identity evidence through the relevant service

New Delhi’s separate national-identity-card page distinguishes a new identity application from replacement. The new-card checklist asks for both parents’ Eritrean identity cards and the applicant’s birth certificate, alongside the application, four recent photographs and residence-visa evidence. Its replacement checklist instead refers to the applicant’s own identity card and requires a police loss report when the card was lost. These are separate civil-document procedures, not an automatic waiver of a passport checklist.

An applicant without their identity card should explain whether it was never issued, lost or needs replacement, and ask which route and evidence the mission requires before the passport application can proceed. Do not assume that supplying a relative’s document answers every missing-document question. The page permits additional case-specific requests and does not publish an identity-card fee or guaranteed completion period. In an illustrative case, someone who lost both documents should raise both losses rather than submit an ordinary passport-expiry file that assumes the original identity card is available.
