Eswatini visitors should separate a thirty-day stay from visa validity and residence permission

Current official guidance requires travellers to check their passport-specific exemption, the admitted stay and the separate procedure for longer visits or work.

Identify the permitted stay rather than the visa’s expiry date

Eswatini’s current visitor guidance makes the duration of admission a separate question from the validity of a visa. The government eVisa portal describes a single-entry authorisation usable within ninety days of issue, allowing a stay of up to thirty days. A traveller holding that document should not plan a ninety-day visit simply because the authorisation remains valid for entry during that period. This is a current planning guide, not an announcement of a new restriction.

The portal describes tourist and business eVisas and says eligible applicants must obtain approval before arrival; its FAQ does not offer visa issuance at the border. It lists a passport scan, recent photograph and travel arrangements among the application evidence, with a typical processing estimate of two to five business days. That estimate is not a guaranteed deadline. Apply sufficiently early to resolve missing evidence before departure.

Check the exemption for your own nationality and purpose

The Ministry of Home Affairs visa service explains that the need for an entry visa depends on nationality. An exemption from obtaining that visa is different from permission to remain indefinitely or take employment. Its guidance directs people intending to study, work or stay beyond the ordinary visitor period toward the temporary-residence-permit system, whose requirements differ from those for an entry visa.

The ministry identifies the Immigration Department and Eswatini’s overseas missions as the responsible application channels. It also explains that a visa allows travel to the border, where the immigration officer assesses admission. Use the ministry’s nationality information and the competent mission to establish your category before paying an intermediary. Where instructions appear inconsistent about an exceptional arrival procedure, obtain advance approval rather than assume the border can resolve an incomplete application.

Arrange an extension before the existing permission runs out

For full British-citizen passport holders, the UK government’s Eswatini entry advice confirms a visa-free visit of up to thirty days. It identifies a further thirty-day extension through Home Affairs and says stays beyond sixty days require a temporary residence permit. This nationality-specific guidance should not be applied automatically to every passport or activity. Ask Home Affairs how the procedure applies to the permission actually endorsed in your passport.

The same resource stresses obtaining an entry stamp and checking its dates. Incorrect dates can lead to problems including a subsequent re-entry restriction. Check the endorsement while still able to raise the issue with the officer, retain evidence of entry and begin any extension enquiry before the admitted stay expires. The reviewed sources do not establish a universal extension fee, guaranteed processing time or an automatic right to another thirty days.

Use the mission’s checklist and charges for a mission application

Eswatini’s Kuala Lumpur High Commission publishes a separate consular checklist: original passport, two application-form copies, two colour photographs, confirmed return air ticket, accommodation evidence, three months of bank statements and a relevant invitation for business travel. Its passport instructions specify four blank pages and validity extending at least thirty days beyond the intended stay. Confirm the checklist with the mission handling your own file rather than combine requirements from different channels.

The mission posts a single-entry three-month visa charge of RM83, shown alongside US$30, and higher multiple-entry charges. Its stated processing period is within ten working days, with applicants advised to check status after five working days. These are the mission’s posted visa charges and service instructions, not a confirmed online-visa or residence-extension tariff. Ask which payment amount and method apply before submitting, and do not interpret a multiple-entry validity period as unrestricted residence.

Check the connecting countries and the longer-stay authority

Canada’s current destination advice confirms a thirty-day tourist-visa exemption for Canadian passport holders, while warning that different documents can produce different requirements. It specifies six months of passport validity beyond expected departure and two blank pages for a regular Canadian passport. Its advice also directs families transiting South Africa to the separate requirements for children. A route through another country requires its own entry or transit assessment.

The Eswatini Immigration Department describes a separate permits section handling work, student, dependant and visitor permissions, assessed through the relevant approval process. Use that department to establish the correct longer-stay application and supporting evidence; a tourist eVisa does not settle a proposed employment arrangement. Before travel, confirm the passport-specific route, intended admission period and onward-country documents. After entry, the operative deadline is the authorised stay recorded by immigration, not a general website’s headline validity period.
