Check whether the online application is actually progressing

Malaysia’s embassy in Addis Ababa advises Ethiopian applicants that, from 1 October 2026, visa applications remaining in “New Application” or “Pending Payment” status for more than seven working days expire automatically and disappear from the application list. Its notice includes applications created before 1 September. An applicant who saved a form should therefore check the live status rather than assume the draft remains available until the intended flight.

The embassy says an expired application must be submitted again using the updated form. This is a deadline follow-up to an October rule, not a newly announced visa exemption or a seven-day promise of approval. The embassy also says it does not accept manual or walk-in applications or issue visas manually. A student encountering an expired draft should use the official portal and support channel, rather than travel to the embassy expecting paper submission to bypass the system.

Obtain study approval before the separate entry visa

The embassy identifies Ethiopia as a nationality requiring a Single Entry Visa before travel to Malaysia. For students, it instructs applicants to obtain electronic Visa Approval Letter approval first, then apply through Malaysia’s official eVisa service. An admission offer, a study application and the entry visa represent different stages; none should be mistaken for completion of all the others.

The Immigration Department’s student-pass guidance explains that Education Malaysia Global Services, or EMGS, screens the academic application and forwards qualifying complete cases for immigration consideration of eVAL approval, including document and security checks. After eVAL approval, visa-required applicants obtain their Single Entry Visa through the official portal. Immigration says eVisa applications can be made worldwide except from Malaysia, Israel and North Korea. Plan the sequence from the applicant’s actual location before buying a non-refundable itinerary.

Prepare the underlying student file before starting the payment clock

EMGS’s required-documents guidance identifies the institution’s acceptance or offer letter as a prerequisite for an online student application. It also requires passport evidence and a completed health declaration, with passport validity of at least eighteen months. For a one-off Student Pass, its recommended passport validity extends twelve months beyond the course duration. Check the precise programme category with the institution before scanning documents.

The EMGS Single Entry Visa country list separately includes Ethiopia. It warns that the list may change according to Immigration Department requirements, so check the live entry requirement before departure even after the academic process has advanced. Keep the offer, eVAL, passport details and entry-visa application consistent. A changed passport or mismatched identity detail should be resolved through the responsible application channel before submission, rather than explained only when boarding.

Budget for distinct charges and realistic processing time

The Immigration Department’s eVisa FAQ posts an RM105 processing charge in addition to the nationality-based visa fee. It lists payment convenience charges of 0.8 percent for e-commerce or Mastercard payment and 1.7 percent for the specified e-wallet methods. Those charges do not represent the full cost of the separate Student Pass process, institutional services, medical screening or insurance. Confirm the final government checkout and the institution’s itemised student charges separately.

The same FAQ gives an ordinary processing estimate of two to seven working days, excluding incomplete files, additional-document enquiries, interviews and specified disruptions. It recommends applying at least fourteen days before departure. This processing estimate and the seven-working-day expiry of an unpaid draft govern different stages. Where a payment has been made but the status remains “New Application”, its instruction is to contact official live support instead of making repeated payments.

Arrange the arrival route and final endorsement with the institution

The eVisa FAQ restricts Ethiopian eVisa holders to entry through Malaysian air entry points. A plan involving arrival overland after a visit to a neighbouring country therefore needs particular attention. Confirm the permissible route against the issued visa and current official instructions; an online authorisation should not be treated as permission to use every border crossing.

Immigration’s student-pass guidance requires post-arrival medical examination within seven days. Following a satisfactory examination and EMGS support, the institution submits the file for Student Pass endorsement through the appropriate immigration office. Contact the institution before flying to arrange that process and the documents needed on arrival. The immediate tasks are to check the draft’s status, complete eVAL and visa stages, and reserve time for the post-arrival requirement. Neither an active account nor a paid application guarantees admission or final endorsement.
