Tourist permission is tied to a specific purpose and arrival date

Ethiopia’s official tourist e-visa is a single-entry permission for tourism and other non-business purposes. The portal says citizens of all countries may apply if they meet the requirements. This current guide describes an established procedure, not a new October relaxation. A visa suitable for a holiday should not be chosen for an assignment simply because its application appears easier.

The tourist information page says visa validity starts from the intended date of entry. Check that date when completing the form and again on the issued document, especially if changing flights. The page lists USD62 for 30 days and USD152 for 90 days. It describes three-day processing under normal circumstances and asks applicants to submit at least three days before expected arrival; that indication is not a guarantee of approval for a last-minute journey.

Prepare the passport and distinguish transit from entry

The tourist checklist requires a recent passport photograph and a passport valid for at least six months from the intended entry date. The Ethiopian embassy in Washington likewise describes passport and photograph evidence for tourist applications and directs electronic-visa questions to the Immigration and Citizenship Service rather than promising embassy control over an online case.

The embassy explains that connecting passengers at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport do not require a visa if they remain inside the airport and do not pass the immigration desk. Leaving the transit area is a different situation. Someone booking an overnight hotel outside the airport should establish the entry permission required rather than assume that a connecting ticket creates a general exemption. Check the actual route and passport before choosing transit or visitor arrangements.

Business research and employment have their own evidence

The portal’s Business and Related Studies Visa page concerns business and market research. It requests a passport, recent photograph, bank statement, company profile and application letter. Its duration description and tariff table do not consistently label the 90-day product’s entry type, so applicants should confirm that detail before planning repeated crossings.

Employment by a foreign-owned or operated business is covered by a separate visa page. That checklist asks for the relevant organisation’s support letter, labour-authority work-permit support, the inviting company’s business licence and tax identification certificate, alongside identity evidence and applicable previous visa records. Use the employment resource for that assignment; the availability of a tourist visa to all nationalities does not establish permission to work. The UK government’s entry guidance also warns that tourist permission does not authorise voluntary employment.

Apply for more time before the existing visa expires

The tourist portal lists extension charges of USD102 for 30 days and USD302 for 90 days. Its extension paragraph refers to an online route around the final 1–15 days and personal attendance for a longer interval, but the English wording also uses the term expired. It should not be read as permission to overstay or a confirmed grace period.

UK government guidance directs travellers seeking a 30- or 90-day extension to attend the Immigration and Citizenship Service headquarters in Addis Ababa before expiry. If the online route does not accept the case, clarify the procedure with the Service while permission remains valid. The official extension form begins with the passport number and reference code, so retain those details. The reviewed pages do not establish that a pending request automatically extends permission.

Match the official resource to the next decision

Use the tourist information page for the holiday category, date basis and tariff, the embassy visa-service page for transit and consular questions, and the relevant business or employment page for an assignment. For an extension, use the official extension service and resolve any uncertainty about attendance before relying on a later departure.

For illustration, a traveller postponing a holiday must recheck the issued visa dates; someone already in Ethiopia who needs more time must address an extension; a person changing the purpose to employment must examine the employment route. These are separate tasks. An application reference, a payment receipt or a future flight booking does not itself establish the right to enter, remain or work.
