Fiji visitor extensions require an application before permit expiry

A four-month visitor allowance is a maximum, not a guaranteed stamp
Visitors planning a longer holiday in Fiji should check the actual permit issued at arrival before relying on the commonly advertised four-month allowance. The Ministry of Immigration’s Visitors Permit page says admission can range from several days to a maximum of four months. This current guide, checked on 29 October 2026, explains an existing procedure rather than announcing a new extension programme.
The ministry says both visa-exempt visitors and travellers who obtained a required visa in advance receive their visitor permit through arrival clearance. That permit covers holiday activities, visiting friends or relatives and specified related purposes. It cannot be used to look for employment or take a job. The date and conditions recorded by Immigration therefore matter more than the length of a hotel reservation.
Decide whether a pre-travel visa is required
The ministry’s Fiji Visas resource describes a visa as advance authority to travel to the border, rather than an automatic right of entry. Travellers from non-exempt nationalities must arrange it before departure. Use the official exemption list linked from the permit guidance to check the passport being used, particularly where a family group holds different nationalities.
The Fiji Visas page distinguishes a single-entry visa, valid for three months and one journey, from a multiple-entry visa valid for twelve months. Each stay on the latter must still not exceed four months. A twelve-month visa is therefore not permission for twelve uninterrupted months in Fiji. For illustration, a traveller returning after a regional trip must check both the visa’s remaining entries and the permission granted for the new stay.
That resource publishes a 14-working-day processing period, with possible delays for incomplete files or additional verification. Treat this as the published processing indication, not a promise that an application filed immediately before a flight will be decided in time.
Use the holiday checklist for documents and fees
The separate Visa Application page tells non-exempt travellers to apply three months before planned travel. Its holiday checklist requests a completed form, a certified passport biodata copy, recent photographs, confirmed accommodation, itinerary or ticket, and evidence of funds. Where family or friends provide accommodation, it requests a local sponsor letter and the sponsor’s identification or permit.
The checklist also identifies onward-country visas where required, relationship evidence for travelling companions and relevant consent or leave letters. Review the applicable circumstances rather than submitting only a passport scan. The page gives single-entry fees of FJ$93 and multiple-entry fees of FJ$185. These are pre-travel visa charges, distinct from the visitor-extension service described separately below.
Applicants should check the photograph instructions before uploading: the page’s checklist and another instruction contain inconsistent numerical references. Confirm the required upload fields or ask Immigration instead of assuming that a disputed photo count can safely be ignored.
Apply for extra visitor time before the existing permit ends
The ministry’s frequently asked questions confirm that an arrival visitor permit may be extended if the application is made before expiry and the requirements and fee are met. It does not say that paying a fee alone creates the extension. Someone whose stamp is shorter than four months should use that actual expiry when planning the application.
The Application Forms, Publications and Fees resource lists FJ$93 for extension of a visitor permit. It directs applications through Immi Hub and payments online using the listed payment methods. Use the relevant online checklist for the extension rather than a work or residence application carrying a different charge. Application updates can be checked through the portal, so retain access to the registered account and monitor any request for further material.
Prepare for the border and keep business travel separate
The UK government’s Fiji entry requirements say British visitors need passports valid for at least six months after arrival and must show an onward or return ticket and any required visa for the next country. Its four-month visa-free guidance concerns British citizen passports; it does not establish eligibility for every nationality travelling from Britain.
That guide separately identifies a business visitor permit valid for 21 days. The ministry FAQ also says ordinary visitors cannot work or study. Before changing a holiday into a course or paid assignment, establish the correct permission. A request to remain longer as a tourist should not be treated as approval for a new activity.
