Use the current notice for the application deadline

The administration of the French Southern and Antarctic Lands, known as TAAF, lists four district-chief positions with applications closing on 4 December 2026. The destinations are Crozet, Kerguelen, Saint-Paul and Amsterdam, and Terre Adélie. One application is sufficient for all four positions. Applicants may indicate destination preferences in their motivation letter, but TAAF retains the final assignment decision. The notice directs dossiers exclusively through MOB-MI and refers candidates to its unique mobility and recruitment form for the required attachments.

The current advertisement gives an overall period from mid-July 2027 to mid-December 2028 for the southern districts, and mid-October 2027 to late January 2029 for Terre Adélie. It describes thirteen months on district, without accompanying family or a return during the stay except for a serious medical reason. Check the live recruitment notice before submitting.

Read the career guide without replacing the advertised dates

The separate district-chief career page describes eligible backgrounds: category-A civil servants, military officers and private-sector candidates with established management experience. Experience in isolated settings and the ability to represent an authority are relevant. A successful appointment is a fixed-term contract; for serving officials or military personnel, it involves outward secondment. The guide expressly says the assignment does not create a right to permanent integration into the administration afterward.

That guide describes a normal annual sequence of initial interviews between January and March, a second hearing in March or April, and results dependent on medical and psychological assessment. It also describes a twelve-month district stay, whereas the current advertisement specifies thirteen. Treat the current vacancy as the source for this campaign and ask recruitment to clarify the complete contractual calendar. Its published payroll deductions include nine percent of indexed salary for food and accommodation and territorial tax of nine percent on the specified gross-income base. These are employment deductions, not visa application fees.

Selected recruits have a separate preparation file

TAAF’s mission-preparation page is addressed to people already recruited for the three subantarctic districts. It covers contractual staff, military personnel, civil servants, volunteers and interns. Applicants should therefore distinguish the recruitment dossier from the documents that follow selection: preparing customs paperwork does not submit a job application or establish that an appointment has been offered. Use the preparation page once the receiving service confirms the appropriate steps for your assignment.

The page provides a packing inventory, customs declaration, receipt, declaration concerning prohibited goods and a direct-customs-representation mandate. It also directs personnel to download, read and sign the internet charter, environmental charters and the charter addressing harassment and sexual and sexist violence. These are distinct responsibilities, rather than substitutes for each other. Its linked wintering guide is labelled 2025. Ask which updated briefing and submission timetable apply to a 2027 departure, particularly if assigned to Terre Adélie, which is outside this page’s stated three-district scope.

Consider everyday obligations before accepting an isolated posting

The official Kerguelen living-conditions sheet gives practical context for assessing an assignment there. It explains that participation in common services is compulsory regardless of status, including fire response, waste collection, cleaning and restaurant duties. When the supply ship is present, personnel also assist with unloading and handling supplies. Management experience must consequently fit a community where a professional title does not remove shared daily responsibilities.

The sheet advises warm clothing, footwear appropriate for wet ship decks and spare corrective glasses where needed. Its cooperative shop is an optional supplement with supplies that can vary, rather than a dependable replacement for essential personal equipment. Excursions beyond the base require the district chief’s permission and are constrained by safety, protected-area rules and scientific activities. This older, undated guidance remains linked from the preparation page; it describes conditions rather than guaranteeing current facilities or an unrestricted leisure itinerary. Clarify assignment-specific equipment and restrictions during the predeparture briefing.
