Employers in Gabon must obtain approval for each foreign worker and job
Employment authorisation is tied to the worker, position and company. Entry permission and renewal require separate attention.

Confirm the named worker, job and employer before recruitment
Gabon’s 2021 Labour Code places the application for foreign-worker employment authorisation on the employer. Article 139 requires the authorisation before recruitment, while Article 140 limits it to a specified worker, position and enterprise. An approval obtained for another employee or company should therefore not be treated as a transferable staffing permission. This current guide explains the published framework, not a new November employment restriction.
The code caps an authorisation at two years and makes it renewable. It also gives nationals priority where skills are equal and links foreign recruitment to skills unavailable in the market. Use the official code to establish the actual job and employer before committing to a start date. The statutory one-month examination period does not justify beginning work without the required decision or assuming an incomplete file is approved. For renewals, Article 141 also requires evidence of implementing the original training plan.
Prepare the labour-market evidence and start renewal early
The official 2016 foreign-worker decree provides additional procedural detail. It requires employers to lodge vacancies with the national employment body and obtain evidence that no suitable Gabonese candidate was found. The specified certificate records publication of the offer, the media used, applicants and reasons for rejecting candidates. It is issued for a particular company and job and has six months’ validity under that text.
The decree also requires employment documents in French or a French translation, with a sufficiently detailed French description where a specialist job title is otherwise unclear. Use these provisions to ask the labour authority for the current complete checklist and any subsequent implementing instructions. A foreign-language contract alone should not be assumed sufficient.
Article 17 directs the employer to begin renewal two months before expiry. Article 16 places the worker’s residence-document costs on the employer. Confirm the current itemised charges and any applicable exemption with the receiving authority. The cited materials do not establish one universal authorisation fee, and the decree’s 2016 date should not be presented as a fresh deadline announcement.
Address the longer stay and health documents before departure
France Diplomatie’s current Gabon guidance was updated on 15 September 2026. It distinguishes ordinary entry from stays exceeding three months, for which it says an indefinite-duration entry authorisation is requested. A worker accepting a longer assignment should discuss that immigration category with the competent Gabonese mission rather than treat a short visit as the entire relocation procedure.
The French guidance also requires the yellow-fever vaccination record and says checks are carried out at entry. Arrange the appropriate medical consultation and carry the actual certificate; employment approval is not an exemption from health-document controls. The resource’s directory identifies Gabonese representation in France for individual enquiries.
Use this official guidance for the French traveller’s immigration planning, while the Gabonese labour authority handles employment authorisation. Keep the intended length of assignment, proposed arrival and current passport details consistent across enquiries. Neither a university, client nor employer invitation should be presented as the issued immigration decision. Confirm the document actually required before purchasing inflexible transport.
A business invitation does not replace employment approval
The UK government’s Gabon entry page is specifically for full British-citizen passport holders travelling from the UK. It requires a visa obtained before travel and identifies the Gabon High Commission as the contact for the application process. British applicants should check that route independently from the employer’s labour dossier; other passport holders need their own applicable instructions.
For business travel, the page requires an invitation from a person or company in Gabon explaining the trip’s purpose. That evidence supports the entry application, but it should not be mistaken for the job-specific authorisation described in the Labour Code. Describe whether the journey concerns meetings or actual employment rather than choose a category merely because an invitation is easy to obtain.
The UK page requires at least six months’ passport validity after arrival and warns against using a passport reported lost or stolen. Check the actual travel document before submission. Obtain the receiving mission’s current visa fee, documents and timing; the reviewed sources provide no guaranteed combined employment-and-entry completion date.
