Language evidence changes the qualifying period

EU Blue Card holders in Germany can pursue a settlement permit after 27 months of qualifying employment with basic A1 German, or after 21 months with B1 German. The federal Make it in Germany settlement guide explains this existing route. This is a current-rule guide for workers preparing an application in November, not an announcement of a new reduction in the qualifying period.

The accelerated route does not mean that a language certificate alone establishes eligibility. The federal guide also requires the relevant pension contributions or comparable provision, secure livelihood, suitable housing and knowledge of Germany’s legal and social system. Applicants should identify both their qualifying work period and the evidence of language proficiency before deciding that an employment anniversary makes the file ready. A settlement permit is a permanent residence title, distinct from naturalisation and citizenship.

Prepare evidence of work, housing and pension provision

Munich’s official Blue Card settlement service offers a detailed example for residents registered in that city. It asks for a valid passport, application and a digital biometric photograph, along with recent salary statements and employment confirmation. Housing evidence depends on whether the home is rented or owned, with the floor area and monthly costs needing to be established.

The city also requests pension waiting-period information covering 27 months, or 21 months where the sufficient-language condition is met, or proof of comparable benefits. Its checklist separately identifies language evidence and knowledge of the legal and social system, including the Living in Germany test or relevant German-language educational evidence. Use the local checklist to identify the accepted document rather than assume that any German course attendance certificate proves B1.

Munich warns that documents are checked for authenticity and that additional evidence may be requested. It currently lists processing of up to twelve months, affected by application volumes and staffing. That local estimate is not a nationwide decision guarantee or an extension of every applicant’s existing permission.

Request the pension record before the file is due

The German Pension Insurance online document service lets insured people request a Versicherungsverlauf, which shows information recorded in their pension account. The service distinguishes that record from a pension forecast and from other contribution documents. Select the document actually requested by the immigration authority; a forecast of future pension value answers a different question from the record of insured periods.

The service requests identifying details and the insurance number, which appears on Pension Insurance correspondence. It says requested documents are sent in printed form by post. Do not mistake submitting an online request for having the immigration evidence in hand immediately. Check the record on receipt and contact the pension insurer about unclear periods before relying on a simple count of months since arrival. The service does not publish an immigration decision or determine which employment periods satisfy the Blue Card route.

Follow the local application and payment procedure

Berlin’s official service is for people whose main residence is in Berlin. It provides a preliminary online check and an online settlement application, followed by document review and an interview if the application is assessed positively. Its confirmation PDF records continuation of the existing residence title within Germany beyond its previous validity date, with an express exclusion for short-stay Schengen visas. Save the actual confirmation rather than assume that an unfinished form has the same effect.

Berlin divides the ordinary EUR 113 charge into EUR 56.50 for online processing and EUR 56.50 at the in-person issuing stage. It lists lower age-dependent charges for Turkish nationals. Those are Berlin’s published arrangements, not the price of a language course or the pension record. Confirm the applicable fee and filing channel with the authority responsible for the actual address.

Compare the local checklist with your employment, language and pension evidence before the present permission expires. Outside Berlin, follow your own authority’s procedure rather than copying another city’s filing arrangements.
