Germany requires Cairo Opportunity Card applications through its online portal from 1 October
The Cairo mission’s procedural change makes the digital pre-check essential; applicants still need to establish qualifications, funding and appointment readiness.

Cairo applicants must use the changed filing route
Germany’s embassy in Cairo requires Opportunity Card applications through the Consular Services Portal from 1 October 2026. Its notice, dated 22 September, also identifies TLScontact as the preliminary-check provider. The change concerns how applicants served by Cairo submit this job-search application. It is not a newly created immigration category: the embassy dates the Opportunity Card’s legal basis to June 2024.
Applicants preparing an Egyptian filing should start with the embassy’s Opportunity Card page and follow its official portal link. An older paper checklist should not be taken as permission to avoid the new submission channel. Equally, Cairo’s instruction should not be extended automatically to every German consulate or every visa purpose. The responsible mission and the precise category remain important when deciding where and how to submit.
Establish the qualification route before uploading evidence
The federal Make it in Germany guidance distinguishes applicants with a German qualification or fully recognised foreign qualification from those applying through points. The former do not need the points route or mandatory language proof for this category. Other applicants need qualifying education recognised in the training country, at least A1 German or B2 English, and six points supported by evidence. Vocational training normally must have lasted at least two years.
The official guide identifies anabin or a Statement of Comparability for foreign university degrees, and a Digital Statement on Professional Qualification for relevant vocational qualifications. Use the route that corresponds to the actual credential rather than assuming work experience replaces every educational requirement. The same guidance puts 2026 subsistence evidence at EUR 1,091 net per month through a blocked account, or a declaration of commitment. These funds demonstrate maintenance; they are separate from the application charge and do not guarantee a successful job search.
Digital screening does not replace the appointment or decision
The Federal Foreign Office’s portal guidance describes uploading the application, receiving preliminary feedback, correcting missing material, and then arranging the required appointment. Originals, biometrics and fee payment still require an in-person stage. A successful completeness check therefore should not be treated as a visa grant or permission to travel.
The portal also provides status information and subsequent instructions. The Foreign Office says portal availability does not change which mission has jurisdiction: applicants should not switch to another mission simply because a desired category is unavailable locally. It also states that existing applicants or people already on waiting lists need take no further action under its general guidance. Anyone with an older Cairo file should reconcile that existing position with the specific October instruction before creating a duplicate application or abandoning a pending appointment.
Match document preparation to the current digital instructions
Cairo’s general preparation page calls for originals and one set of copies, a biometric photograph, signed forms and declarations, and English or German translations of supporting documents. It links to recognised translators and legalisation information. These resources help applicants organise evidence for inspection rather than relying on an agent’s unsupported assurances that translations or original records are unnecessary.
That general page predates the Opportunity Card’s October online-only instruction and still refers to a conventional application form. Follow the current category page and portal-generated requirements where the workflow differs. Keep the uploaded records consistent with the documents presented in person. If a qualification assessment, translation or funding document remains outstanding, resolve it through the named official process before assuming the digital pre-check can be completed.
Budget the fee and plan around uncertain processing time
The embassy’s fee page lists the national visa charge at EUR 75, payable in Egyptian pounds, generally in cash. It lists EUR 37.50 for applicants under 18 and says other exceptions are assessed by the embassy. Appointment booking and application forms are free; refusal does not make the processing charge refundable. Confirm any separate provider charge through the official referral rather than confusing it with the government fee.
The Cairo guidance warns that national visa processing often takes weeks to months. The October channel change creates no guaranteed decision date or job offer. Applicants should identify their intended travel date, complete qualification and maintenance evidence, and monitor the official account for requests. The immediate action is to establish the correct application route and submit a coherent file, while allowing time for both preliminary screening and substantive examination.
