Germany · Current-rule guide

Entrepreneurs applying to settle in Germany must show demand and financing for their business

Commercial founders should prepare a business case before applying. Mission checklists and Berlin’s in-country application instructions address different stages and should be read separately.

A commercial project needs more than a registered company

Foreign entrepreneurs seeking a German self-employment residence permit should explain commercial interest or regional demand, the expected positive economic effect and secured financing through capital or a loan commitment. The federal Make it in Germany guide identifies these tests; company registration alone does not establish that they are met. This current-rule guide concerns commercial founders; freelance professions have a separate route.

The federal guide also requires a secured livelihood and adequate pension provision for applicants older than forty-five. It identifies a distinct situation for German-university graduates or researchers whose proposed business relates to their degree or research: they still need the relevant residence permission, but the guide exempts that related activity from the commercial tests just described. Establish which category applies before preparing the file. Neither the general checklist nor a promising idea guarantees approval.

India’s checklist shows what a useful business plan contains

The German missions in India ask commercial applicants for a structured business concept, financing and investment plan, capital requirements, revenue forecasts for the first three years, market and competitive analysis and a marketing strategy. Where relevant, the plan should explain anticipated jobs or training positions and contributions to innovation or research. These are linked parts of one commercial case: financial projections should correspond to the business model rather than sit beside it as unexplained figures.

The India checklist additionally identifies a curriculum vitae, qualifications or experience evidence, available capital, secure subsistence for at least a year and health insurance. An applicant in a regulated profession needs the competent authority’s permission to practise where applicable. The page advises consulting the foreigners authority, chamber or professional regulator at the intended place of residence about special prerequisites. These are India submission instructions and useful planning examples, not a claim that every German mission requests the same number of copies or identical forms.

Canada’s instructions separate a complete file from a decision

The German missions in Canada require proof of residence in Canada and, for non-Canadian applicants, the original Canadian residence permit at the appointment. The checklist calls for original documents, a completed printed VIDEX form, a current stamped biometric photograph and a passport valid at least six months from visa issuance with two blank pages. Its company profile can be in German or English and should include financing, marketing and revenue projections.

The Canada guidance expressly says there is no entitlement to this visa and that German authorities assess the submitted case individually. It suggests allowing four weeks from submission of complete documents because domestic approval is generally needed; this is not a guaranteed decision date or permission to start operating while waiting. Health cover also needs attention if arrival precedes statutory insurance. Some travel and incoming policies exclude long or permanent stays, so a policy’s title alone does not establish suitable cover.

Berlin’s online procedure is an in-country residence application

Berlin’s residence service requires an appropriate lawful-stay basis, such as a national visa or residence permit, or nationality-based eligibility to apply after visa-free entry. A short-stay Schengen visa is insufficient for this procedure. Applicants submit online, pay before final submission and retain the resulting PDF confirmation. The page explains continuation of an existing title within Germany, but excludes someone whose title had already expired when applying and holders of a short-stay Schengen visa.

Berlin asks applicants to wait for its review and an invitation if the case is positively assessed. The published electronic residence-card fee is 100 euros, with other categories and reductions listed separately. Its four-to-six-week card-production period concerns collection after issuance, rather than the complete immigration assessment. Do not use that production interval as an overseas visa-processing deadline. The service also publishes a financing-plan form, which is useful for presenting the proposed funding in the format expected by the local authority.

Use the national-visa fee rather than the Schengen amount

Toronto’s dedicated fee table lists the adult national-visa fee as 75 euros and the adult Schengen fee as 90 euros. This distinction matters because the federal business guide’s general visa-fee paragraph instead says 90 euros. For a national self-employment application in Toronto, follow the mission’s specific national-visa table and confirm the Canadian-dollar amount at payment. Its service fees are non-refundable even after refusal or withdrawal, and its local exchange rate is adjusted periodically. The later residence-card fee is a separate charge.
