Greece protection permits: renew 30 days early and keep travel-document steps separate
Current Asylum Service guidance distinguishes residence renewal, card production and travel-document applications, with separate evidence and payment procedures.

International-protection renewal starts before the card expires
Greece’s Asylum Service instructs recognised refugees and beneficiaries of subsidiary protection to request residence renewal no later than thirty calendar days before expiry. This is a current guide to existing procedures, not a newly announced November deadline for every resident. It concerns international-protection residence documents, rather than student, employment or investment permits. An unjustified late renewal can attract a EUR 100 fine; evidence explaining lateness should accompany a late request.
The residence-permit guidance directs renewal requests to the beneficiaries’ asylum unit by email and specifies a subject including the existing permit number. Keep the application and subsequent instructions together. If the card expires before renewal is completed, the guidance says the Asylum Service sends a status-confirmation certificate to the registered email address. That certificate, the old card and the final renewed card represent different documents. Follow the instructions for the Passport Office and preserve its submission receipt, which is needed later. Do not assume that an email sent to an unrelated immigration procedure has initiated this renewal.
Keep contact details and the status record accurate
The ministry’s Positive Decision guidance explains continuing obligations after protection is granted. Changes of residential address or telephone number must be reported to the competent Regional Asylum Office or Asylum Unit; electronic declaration is available through the linked ministry service. Changes in civil status and nationality also require notification and the relevant original evidence. These obligations matter during renewal because the authority needs an accurate record and a usable way to communicate.
Lost or stolen residence and travel documents require a further procedure. The guidance calls for reporting to the competent asylum authority and the police, obtaining the certified police statement and requesting replacement through the Asylum Service. A person should not simply describe a missing card as an ordinary expiring-card renewal without explaining the loss. An illustrative beneficiary who moves while waiting should update the address and keep evidence of the notification, rather than assume that a previous application automatically updates every later administrative record. The authority’s Positive Decision page identifies the electronic reporting links and the responsible office.
A travel-document application has its own evidence
The ministry’s Travel Documents page lists an application or declaration, protection and residence decisions, recent passport photographs and the relevant administrative fee for recognised refugees. Subsidiary-protection beneficiaries must establish the travel-document entitlement described in their decision or provide objective evidence that their country’s authorities cannot issue a national passport. Holding protection in Greece does not make those evidential distinctions disappear.
Children’s applications have additional representation or consent requirements. The guidance addresses absent parents, sole custody and unaccompanied minors; applicants should use the instructions matching the actual family situation. Later collection is another stage: the ministry directs beneficiaries to check official ready-document announcements using their case number and attend in person at the specified place and time with the required receipt and residence evidence. A travel document is not a renewed residence card, nor does its issuance determine every destination’s entry rules. Before buying tickets, establish which documents are ready and whether the proposed destination requires a visa.
Pay the correct administrative fee and retain its code
The official e-Administrative Fee service explains the payment process linked from the travel-document instructions. Creating the electronic fee generates a unique code. Payment can be made using the RF payment code through banks or Hellenic Post, or by the supported card-payment route. The fee then needs to be submitted or used with the public body for which it was created. Merely generating an unpaid code is therefore different from completing the payment and supplying it to the receiving authority.
Use that official service to follow the applicable category and payment instructions, rather than transferring money to an unverified intermediary claiming to accelerate printing. The resources checked here do not establish one universal total for residence renewal, a travel document, late-application penalties and replacement after loss. Those are different procedures and should be budgeted separately. Retain the receipt, the code and the authority’s messages, and respond within any individual deadline given. Neither fee payment nor appearance in an application queue guarantees a particular production or collection date; rely on the actual notification for the next appointment.
