Start with renewal rather than a first passport application
Grenadian citizens renewing a passport through a mission in the United States should use the renewal instructions for the office receiving their documents. The Washington embassy’s Passport FAQs distinguishes renewals from first applications, which require a first-time questionnaire and an interview. An expired passport can still be renewed under the published instructions. This is a comparison of current public guidance, not a newly announced passport policy.
The FAQ asks renewal applicants for completed paperwork, original citizenship evidence and certified photographs, with records supporting changes of name, marriage or adoption where relevant. It describes adult passports as valid for ten years and those for applicants under 18 as valid for five. The old document’s expiry is therefore relevant to the application category, but it does not erase the need to establish identity and citizenship.
Read the Washington document requirements before mailing originals
Washington’s renewal sheet requires the original birth certificate, naturalisation or registration certificate where applicable, and surrender of the passport whether expired or still valid. It requests original marriage or divorce records where applicable and says documents return with the new passport. Plan around the period those originals will be unavailable.
The sheet requires handwriting in blue or black ink, capitals and signatures above Section 1 and in Section 10. Its recommender must be an unrelated notary or attorney and endorse one of two recent photographs. The published destination is the consular section at 1701 New Hampshire Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20009.
Miami’s packet contains details that require a direct question
Miami’s cover checklist asks for copies of birth and citizenship records but original marriage or divorce documents. Its attached general form describes originals with photocopies, then exempts an unchanged renewal surrendering a Caribbean Community passport from other documents besides photographs. These instructions need reconciliation for the individual file.
Ask Miami whether an unchanged adult renewal requires an original birth certificate, a copy, or neither. The general form uses under 16 for consent; the renewal cover asks for the other spouse’s consent for children under 18. Parents of 16- or 17-year-olds need the office’s answer. Omission from one checklist does not establish withdrawal of another requirement.
Compare application charges and courier charges separately
Washington’s instruction sheet lists US$350 for an applicant aged 18 or over and US$250 for someone under 18. Its mainland United States return charge is US$20, compared with US$60 outside the mainland. Miami’s packet shows the same adult and child passport prices but US$45 and US$75 respectively for return postage and handling. The difference is in the receiving office’s published courier schedule, rather than the ordinary passport category.
Both packets require separate money orders for passport and courier charges and reject personal or company cheques. Do not combine the fees into one payment simply because the amounts are known. Miami additionally lists an optional US$50 express service with an approximate period; that wording is not a guaranteed delivery date. Confirm the current receiving address, payment arrangement and courier amount with the chosen office before sending valuable originals.
Do not apply the ordinary renewal price to every replacement
Grenada’s embassy in Beijing publishes a more detailed category table. It distinguishes ordinary renewal, renewal more than six months before expiry, a lost or damaged valid passport, and an expired passport that has been lost or damaged. Its early-renewal and valid-document replacement prices are higher than ordinary renewal prices. This is evidence that expiry and the reason for replacement matter; the Beijing table is not an instruction to send a United States application there.
The Washington FAQ separately requires a police report and notarised affidavit for loss or theft. Applicants should describe the document’s condition and expiry to their receiving mission and request the exact category, supporting evidence and payable amount. No direct clarification of the checklist discrepancies was obtained. These sources establish no universal filing deadline or guaranteed completion time; anyone needing urgent travel should request the mission’s specific emergency-document instructions rather than assume a routine renewal will arrive in time.
