Hong Kong visitors using Indian passports must match registration to their document

Check eligibility before relying on a short visa-free visit
Indian nationals planning a short visit to Hong Kong generally need successful Pre-arrival Registration, PAR, before travel. Registration is free, but a completed form is not sufficient if the result is unsuccessful. This current guide explains the established Immigration Department procedure; it does not announce a new visa waiver or suggest that registration guarantees admission.
The department’s PAR page requires an Indian passport valid for at least six months and an intended visit or relevant transit stay no longer than fourteen days. Direct air transit without leaving the airport transit area is exempt. Other identified exceptions include valid Indian diplomatic or official passports and certain people already holding Hong Kong immigration permission. Check the specific exception rather than treating every airport connection as exempt.
Keep registration validity separate from each permitted stay
A successful registration remains valid for six months and can support multiple visits, each normally up to fourteen days, subject to the ordinary entry requirements. It does not authorise six months of uninterrupted residence. Use the department’s registration-validity enquiry to check an existing record before attempting another application or arranging travel.
For illustration, an Indian passport holder with an unexpired PAR who plans a ten-day holiday must still check the passport, supporting travel evidence and the actual permission granted at arrival. Someone planning a twenty-day stay needs the appropriate visa route rather than assuming the registration’s six-month validity makes the longer visit permissible. The intended duration should be settled before selecting the application.
Print, check and sign the linked notification slip
The department’s downloadable PAR guidance requires the successful notification slip to be printed on blank white A4 paper and signed after checking the information. The details must exactly match the particular Indian passport used for registration. If the registrant is under sixteen, a parent or legal guardian checks and signs. Keep the printout with that passport throughout the journey.
The guidance says a renewed or replaced passport, or changed personal particulars, requires a fresh registration on the new basis. The old slip should not be paired with a replacement document merely because the traveller is the same person. If the slip is lost, damaged or incorrectly printed, use the official view-and-print function. These checks concern the identity link that transport operators and immigration will examine.
Carry evidence of the actual visit
The Indian consulate’s advisory, dated 20 March 2024, identifies confirmed return or onward travel, hotel booking, proof of a genuine visit purpose and sufficient financial provision alongside the passport and printed PAR. It remains useful supporting guidance, rather than a newly issued warning. A successful registration does not remove these normal entry checks.
The consulate describes cases where travellers who did not meet the requirements were refused permission to land and returned to the embarkation point. Travellers should therefore keep evidence consistent: the accommodation period, return journey and stated purpose should explain the same proposed visit. A registration confirmation alone does not answer questions about funding or departure plans.
Use a visa application when PAR does not fit
Where registration cannot be completed, the department directs Indian nationals to apply for an entry visa directly to Hong Kong Immigration. Its guidance says Chinese diplomatic and consular missions do not accept Indian visit-visa applications. A visit exceeding fourteen days, employment, study or residence also requires the appropriate immigration route.
The visitor procedure identifies applicant form ID 1003A and sponsor form ID 1003B. A proposed individual sponsor should be at least eighteen, a genuine Hong Kong resident and acquainted with the applicant. Documents in another language require a certified Chinese or English translation under the department’s instructions. Use this checklist before submitting a replacement visa request.
The Visit/Transit resource provides the visit-visa application and supporting-document instructions, including financial and travel evidence and relevant purpose-specific records. It also explains visitor restrictions on employment, including unpaid work, and study. The current fee table lists HK$330 for an ordinary visa outside the specified admission schemes; the PAR service itself remains free. Allow time for the visa decision before travel and follow the actual entry permission’s expiry. Registering, paying a visa fee or requesting extra time does not assure approval.
