India arrival card remains separate from visa approval and has a 72-hour window
Current guidance explains the free digital arrival form, conflicting older OCI instructions and separate electronic visa and passport checks.

Arrival information is a separate border requirement
Foreign travellers preparing to enter India should complete the digital arrival information separately from obtaining their visa or establishing Overseas Citizen of India status. The official arrival-form service expressly states that it provides arrival information rather than a visa and is free. This is a current procedure review checked on 29 October 2026, not a new announcement of the digital system introduced in October 2025.
The Indian embassy Santiago general visa guidance tells foreigners and OCI cardholders to submit the digital card within 72 hours before arrival through the official immigration service or Indian Visa Su-Swagatam application. Use that direct embassy instruction for the timing and scope, then the official e-Arrival form to submit the details. Receiving a visa weeks before departure does not complete an arrival form intended for the final three days.
OCI holders should not rely on an older exemption notice
The central Indian eVisa guidance includes foreigners and OCI cardholders in its notice about completing the arrival card. By contrast, an Indian embassy Sao Tome notice dated 8 October 2025 says OCI holders are exempt. That older mission notice also describes a temporary transition in which paper cards remained available. It should not be treated as proof that an exemption or paper fallback still applies unchanged more than a year later.
The practical action for an OCI traveller is to follow the central immigration direction and complete the free digital form before arrival, while keeping the valid passport and OCI evidence for admission. Where a specific case cannot be completed in the system, seek immigration or airline clarification before departure. This review does not establish a continuing general right to use a paper card or a current OCI exemption that overrides the central instructions.
Prepare the details before opening the form
The arrival-form fields ask for the name as in the passport, nationality or region, passport number, purpose, arrival date and countries visited in the previous six days. They also request the Indian address, state and district, email, telephone and emergency contact details. Assemble these from the actual itinerary and accommodation confirmation so that the form can be completed accurately during its submission window.
An illustrative traveller arriving after visiting several countries should report the relevant travel history rather than simply the airport where the final flight departed. The address should identify the real place of stay. The form includes a declaration that the information is true and accurate; completing a generic template without checking the journey can create avoidable discrepancies. Save the submission confirmation with the other travel documents and update plans through the official process where necessary.
Electronic visa applications have an earlier deadline
The central eVisa instructions tell eligible applicants to apply at least four days before arrival and identify nationality-specific processing fees. They require a recent front-facing white-background photograph and the passport biographical page, with additional evidence depending on category. The processing charge is non-refundable even if authorization is refused. Use the eVisa resource for eligibility and payment rather than assume the free arrival card also provides a free visa.
The same instructions say travellers should confirm that the electronic travel authorization is granted before commencing the journey. A submission confirmation is therefore different from an approved visa. Do not leave the visa application until the arrival-form window opens: a form submitted within 72 hours cannot replace an application that should have been made at least four days ahead. This review does not assign a universal visa price or guarantee a decision within four days.
Passport, accommodation registration and departure still matter
UK government guidance for British citizen passports requires six months passport validity after arrival and two blank pages. It distinguishes a valid OCI card from a visa and warns that the wrong visa category can lead to refusal or removal. Its arrival-form section also confirms that the form is separate from both visa and OCI evidence.
The UK resource further says accommodation providers must register foreign guests through the C-form system and tells travellers to obtain an entry stamp, which is checked on departure. A visitor should therefore retain the granted permission, passport and arrival confirmation, verify the entry record and check accommodation registration. The next actions have different deadlines: arrange the correct visa first, submit arrival details in the final 72 hours, and leave within the actual authorized stay.
