India student visas: SII registration alone does not complete the university-to-visa process

Current official guidance distinguishes the student’s SII ID, the institution’s final confirmation, the visa application and post-arrival registration.

An SII ID starts the process; it is not immigration approval

International students planning study in India need to distinguish four stages: registration on Study in India, confirmation of admission, the visa decision and registration after arrival. Current Indian consular guidance requires foreign students to register on the Study in India portal and quote its unique SII-ID on the student-visa application. This is an explanation of the existing procedure, not a new 1 November visa announcement.

The Indian consulate in Seattle’s SII guidance explains the connection between the education platform and the e-Student Visa application. Its significance is procedural: a student should obtain and retain the same identifier throughout the admission and visa process. It does not say that generating the number guarantees entry or settles every nationality’s visa eligibility. Someone with an SII account but no completed admission should therefore work on the institution’s outstanding requirements before treating the visa as the only remaining step. Use the consulate’s guidance to understand the ID requirement and the education portal to complete the student record.

The institution has a final-confirmation task of its own

The official Study in India Institute Dashboard Process document shows that a student can receive multiple offers but accept only one. The institution then has to give final confirmation. Only after that stage are the student’s details transferred into the information shared with the immigration and visa system. The diagram identifies student details, admission information and the fee receipt among the connected data.

This creates a practical check for an applicant whose visa record does not appear to reflect an accepted place. Ask the international-student office whether final confirmation has been completed in its institutional dashboard, rather than repeatedly creating student accounts or assuming a downloaded offer letter proves that data transfer has occurred. The document is aimed at institutions, so it helps explain which action belongs to the university rather than the student. It also shows that visa-status information becomes visible through the education platform once immigration authorities upload the corresponding data; a missing update should not be interpreted as a decision by inference.

Prepare the visa evidence and check the electronic route separately

The official Indian e-Visa portal lists an e-Student category with multiple entries and a duration of one year from grant of the electronic travel authorisation. Do not substitute the general five-year description sometimes given for regular student visas for the validity displayed on an individual electronic grant. The document actually issued controls travel planning.

For e-Student applications, the portal lists the passport personal-data page, an admission letter stating course duration, and financial-support evidence: a parent or guardian’s support letter accompanied by a bank guarantee, or the previous six months’ bank statements. Medical or paramedical courses additionally require the specified health-ministry no-objection certificate. Use the portal’s current nationality list and application instructions to establish whether the electronic route fits the passport and circumstances. The SII registration requirement is not a blanket exemption from those checks. No single student-visa fee for every nationality is established by the sources reviewed here; use the amount and payment instructions applicable to the actual application.

Arrival brings another registration obligation

The Study in India Onboarding and FRRO guidance says holders of Student visas valid for more than 180 days must register with the relevant foreigner-registration authority within 14 days of first arrival, irrespective of how long they initially intend to stay. Keep that deadline separate from the course start date and the expiry of the visa. A short first visit does not, under that guidance, remove registration solely because the visa holder plans to leave before 180 days.

The same resource explains the electronic registration process and says routine attendance at the FRRO or FRO is unnecessary unless authorities specifically call the student. Applicants should use their own email address, check official requests and upload legible documents. The institution can assist with the student’s arrival arrangements, but an admission offer is not a substitute for the registration permit or certificate. Before travel, keep the SII ID, accepted admission, visa authorisation and arrival-registration instructions together; each records a different decision or obligation.
