Interns in Curaçao need to choose the correct immigration document before starting

Dutch interns and foreign permit applicants follow different checklists and pay different charges. A short placement does not remove the filing requirement.

Establish whether the placement is an internship for immigration purposes

People arranging a placement in Curaçao should establish their nationality category and the link between the placement and their studies before selecting an immigration form. The official permit-portal FAQ describes an intern as a foreigner or Dutch national not born in the former Netherlands Antilles whose internship is necessary for study. This current-rule guide concerns that category, rather than ordinary employment or admission to a university.

The FAQ says a Dutch intern receives admission by operation of law, documented through a Van Rechtswege declaration. It asks Dutch interns to use the internship agreement as evidence of means and enter the placement’s details under employment information. It also says the intern must leave when the internship period ends. Do not assume the placement automatically includes an extra month of tourism afterward. Raise any different travel plan with the Admissions Organisation before relying on it.

Foreign permit applicants need a three-party agreement and local company evidence

The immigration service’s study-and-internship permit page requires an internship application regardless of the placement’s duration. Its internship checklist lists payment evidence, all valid passports where there are several nationalities, a birth-record copy issued within a year and a police-conduct certificate from the last place of residence issued within three months. The agreement must be signed by the educational institution, placement company and intern.

It also requires the company’s chamber-of-commerce extract within six months, educational enrolment evidence and health-insurance coverage for Curaçao throughout the stay. The published internship application charge is 525 Caribbean guilders, XCG. The page says first applicants must await the decision abroad and allows the authority four months to decide. A placement’s approaching start date is not stated to create permission to begin. Ask the company for its documents early enough to assemble the complete file.

The Dutch declaration has its own checklist and charge

The separate study-and-internship declaration page publishes a 615-XCG charge for a Van Rechtswege declaration, payable before application. This is a different product from the internship residence permit. Its internship checklist requests payment proof, copies of valid passports, a conduct certificate no older than three months and sustainable means demonstrated through an agreement signed by the school, placement company and intern.

The declaration’s internship list does not repeat every item in the foreign-permit checklist. It should therefore be read under the correct heading rather than combining all study and internship lists indiscriminately. The same page allows four months for a decision and requires an appointment after a positive decision to collect the document. It describes six weeks to lodge an objection after a negative decision. Keep the decision date and its instructions: a document-collection appointment and an objection deadline serve different purposes.

Use the official submission route and make complete scans

The general application page directs users to digital forms for the intended residence purpose but warns that not every purpose can be filed through the portal. If the required purpose is absent, it instructs applicants to send the form and supporting PDF documents to [email protected]. This is the published submission route; VisaWand has not sent documents or an enquiry on anyone’s behalf.

The scan instructions require images of original documents that are straight, legible and unedited. Information must not be crossed out, obscured or covered, and identity-document edges must remain visible. For an illustrative applicant with several passports, prepare complete readable copies rather than cropped identity details. A technically delivered message does not establish that all category requirements are met or that permission has been granted. Confirm the intended purpose before using a similarly named form.

Separate the application payment from any security deposit

The service’s fees and deposits page describes a security deposit determined by the minister using transport tariffs, with the amount depending on nationality. It says this payment follows approval of admission. That is different from the category’s application charge paid before filing. The page does not establish one fixed deposit for every intern or prove that every Dutch declaration holder owes the same deposit as a foreign permit applicant.

The page also gives a restitution route after a negative residence decision or where fees were paid but no application was submitted. It requires the request form, a valid-passport copy and payment evidence. It says applicants can ask about readiness after six weeks, followed by the stated voucher and treasury steps when applicable. This is not a guaranteed refund within six weeks. Keep the category payment receipt and any deposit record separate so the authority can identify the transaction concerned.
