Iranian workers in Canada face a one-use extension policy ending 31 March 2027

Current Canadian guidance limits Iran-related special measures to qualifying work-permit holders. Applicants must check the permit’s issue date, their previous use of the policy and their existing expiry date.

A targeted work-permit route, rather than a general extension

Canada’s current Iran immigration guidance says qualifying Iranian workers already in Canada may request an extension under measures ending on 31 March 2027. The arrangements changed on 1 March 2026; this is a current deadline guide, not a new November concession. IRCC’s guidance, updated on 14 October, says no other temporary special measures are in place for Iranian applicants. Visitors and students seeking more time must use the ordinary procedures applicable to their status.

The guidance requires Iranian nationality, a valid passport and a valid work permit issued no later than 28 February 2025. Applicants must be in Canada when they apply and when a decision is made, and must not already have received a work permit under the March 2026 measures. An approved extension could last up to two years, but cannot extend beyond the passport’s expiry. Use the Iran guidance to check these conditions before starting the online application; possession of an Iranian passport alone is insufficient.

The underlying public policy preserves other admissibility tests

The Revised temporary public policy for nationals of Iran in Canada was signed on 25 February 2026 and took effect on 1 March. It permits an exemption from a specified work-permit requirement for applicants meeting its conditions. It does not remove all immigration requirements: the published instrument expressly retains other legislative, selection and admissibility obligations that have not been exempted under an applicable policy.

The instrument also says it can be revoked without advance notice. Its one-use condition concerns an exemption already granted under this policy. Someone whose permit was extended through an earlier arrangement should therefore identify exactly which measure produced that document, rather than assume every previous extension has the same effect. Conversely, receiving a permit under the March 2026 policy does not establish eligibility for a second grant. Use the dated public-policy instrument alongside the current operational guidance when checking that history.

The existing permit’s expiry may be the earlier deadline

IRCC’s ordinary work-permit extension instructions explain that a timely application can preserve temporary status while processing continues. For an online submission, receipt must occur before midnight Coordinated Universal Time on the day the existing permit expires. That may fall earlier than midnight in the applicant’s Canadian time zone. The March 2027 policy deadline does not authorise someone with an earlier expiry to ignore the conditions of their present permission.

The extension instructions provide the online application route and explain that applicants need electronic copies of documents and a payment card. Use the personalised checklist generated in the account to identify the complete file. The Iran-specific guidance requires the worker-extension application and a passport or travel-document copy. An illustrative worker whose permit expires in December 2026 should prepare for that December deadline, rather than delay until March because the special policy remains available then.

Budget for fees and distinguish proof of work from a decision

IRCC’s official fee list gives a CAD155 work-permit processing fee and a further CAD100 open-work-permit holder fee where applicable. The Iran guidance also identifies biometrics charges where required. These arrangements are not a continuation of the earlier blanket fee-waiver description. Check which charges the account requests, retain the receipt and submit a complete application; paying does not establish that eligibility has been accepted.

The separate After you extend instructions explain that eligible online applicants may receive a WP-EXT letter as evidence of continued work authorisation under the original conditions. It is not the new permit itself. The page says eligible applicants can continue under those conditions beyond the letter’s printed expiry while awaiting the decision. People who apply after their permit expires are not eligible for that proof letter. Use this resource when an employer needs evidence, rather than present a payment receipt as work permission. The VisaWand editorial team edited and checked this reporting; approval and final validity remain individual IRCC decisions.
