Iraq’s Kurdistan visitor extensions carry separate fees and health-test requirements

Separate the regional stay from permission for federal Iraq

Foreign visitors extending a stay in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq should use the regional residency procedure rather than assume their original electronic visa provides unlimited time. This is a guide to currently published administrative rules, not a new November visa announcement. The distinction matters for travellers arriving in Erbil or Sulaimaniyah who later intend to visit Baghdad: a regional visa is not automatically permission to travel throughout federal Iraq.

The UK government’s Iraq entry guidance expressly limits Kurdistan visas to the region. For full British citizen passport holders travelling to federal Iraq, it instead describes an advance federal electronic-visa application, a USD160 fee, 60-day validity and a return or onward ticket. Use that nationality-specific resource to distinguish the federal route before changing the itinerary. The regional government’s Travel to Kurdistan page separately says departure requires a valid passport and documentation establishing the legality of the prior stay.

Count the stay from entry, not from the visa’s issue date

The regional e-Visa Portal FAQ distinguishes 90-day visa validity from a 30-day permitted stay after entry. The former is the window in which the visa may be used to travel; it does not authorise a 90-day visit. Check the actual dates on the issued visa and arrival record. The FAQ also requires a passport valid for at least six months when applying and at least one empty page.

The FAQ separates List A applicants, who can apply directly, from List B applicants needing a local guarantor and verification code. It gives an administrative application fee of IQD100,000 and says refused, cancelled or duplicate applications do not produce a refund. Use the linked nationality checker before paying. A passport’s nationality, rather than a companion’s successful application, determines which process the traveller should investigate. The published processing descriptions remain subject to further manual checking.

Apply at the residency directorate before the existing visa expires

The regional Visa extension for foreigners service page directs applicants to the residency directorate responsible for their location. It lists the passport as the document and describes referral to the laboratory, payment and an extension stamp. Published charges are IQD100,000 for each extension plus IQD10,000 administration. The page warns of IQD20,000 per day for late applications, making the existing expiry date the immediate deadline.

Official pages disagree about the maximum number of extensions: the extension service describes up to three, while the separate Issuance of visas service describes two paid 30-day extensions with approved reasons. Do not plan a third extension as an entitlement. Ask the residency directorate which rule applies before committing to accommodation beyond the second extension. The issuance page also distinguishes visitor-to-residence conversion for family reunification from tourist conversion, which requires Interior Ministry approval. Neither paying for an extension nor holding a tourist visa establishes work or residence rights.

Allow for the laboratory referral and correct application images

The linked Foreigner’s Health Test service describes tests covering HIV, hepatitis B and C, malaria and bilharzia, with the required combination depending on the traveller’s country. Its procedure starts with residency registration and an electronic referral to the public-health laboratory. Applicants then confirm their registration, pay and provide a blood sample. The service lists IQD31,500 for HIV and hepatitis B/C testing and IQD1,000 for bilharzia; these are separate from visa-extension charges.

The official portal’s Requirements page helps applicants avoid an unrelated source of delay: passport copies and photographs must be readable JPEG files between 10 kilobytes and 5 megabytes. The passport image must show the first page, while the portrait must be recent and show the face clearly against a plain light background. Use that resource for the full dimensions and photo restrictions. Published service times are not a guaranteed completion date, particularly where laboratory clearance is outstanding. The VisaWand editorial team edited and checked this guide; the directorate must resolve the extension-limit discrepancy for the individual case.
