Use the award notification date rather than the graduation ceremony
Non-EEA graduates educated in Ireland should prepare their Stamp 1G application while their Stamp 2 student permission is still current. ISD’s Third Level Graduate Programme requires an application within six months of written notification that the award has been achieved. The award parchment can be replaced by an official confirmation letter where the graduation ceremony has not yet taken place. Waiting for the ceremony can therefore waste part of the application window.
The programme concerns eligible awards from recognised Irish awarding bodies, not any overseas qualification held by someone living in Ireland. Applicants need a current student permission and registration card, and must satisfy the programme’s limits on previous student residence and previous participation. The programme page lists a €300 registration fee per person. This is an existing graduate route, not a new November extension of student permission.
Check the initial period and the evidence for a second year
The graduate policy distinguishes Level 8 from Level 9 or above on Ireland’s National Framework of Qualifications. Level 8 supports up to twelve months within a seven-year student-and-graduate limit. Level 9 or above can support twenty-four months within an eight-year limit, but only twelve months are granted initially.
For the further twelve months, keep evidence of steps to secure suitable graduate-level work, such as interviews or registration with graduate recruitment agencies. Authorities consider employment-permit occupation and salary rules when assessing the search. Read its older local-office instruction alongside current online-registration arrangements. It also excludes applications after existing permission has lapsed. The six-month award window should therefore not be treated as permission to remain for six months beyond a student card’s expiry.
Prepare the correct insurance and course-completion documents
ISD’s category-specific Required Documents page lists the passport biometric page, both sides of the current Irish Residence Permit and evidence of successful third-level course completion for a change from Stamp 2 to graduate Stamp 1G. Its first-registration column accepts private medical insurance or travel insurance with specified medical and hospital cover for the period of residence. The renewal column is stricter: it requires private medical insurance and explicitly says travel insurance is insufficient.
The separate checklist for a second twelve-month graduate period again requests the passport, current registration card and private medical insurance. It does not list job-search evidence there, while the programme policy expressly requires satisfactory efforts to obtain graduate work. That shorter checklist does not establish that the policy condition has disappeared. Keep the interview and recruitment records as well as the listed identity and insurance documents, and ask registration which evidence must be uploaded for the extension. Check that the policy is in the graduate’s name and covers hospital stays and the relevant dates.
Use the online stamp-change route before permission expires
The current registration FAQ expressly gives moving from Stamp 2 after a degree to graduate Stamp 1G as an example of an online stamp change. It says registration renewals and stamp changes use online applications unless a registration officer specifically directs otherwise. This provides a current route for graduates reading the older policy’s local-office appointment wording; an old appointment instruction should not be assumed to require a new in-person booking.
The FAQ requires applicants renewing online to be physically in Ireland and to declare that fact. It also says no reminder is sent and renewals generally open twelve weeks before the current card expires. If an award notification and proposed stamp change do not fit the standard renewal window, clarify the timing through registration’s current instructions; do not invent a later expiry or submit false dates to force an application. An application window, the existing permission’s expiry and the eventual decision date are different matters.
Work within the graduate conditions and plan the next permission
ISD’s immigration-stamps guidance allows graduate Stamp 1G holders to work full time under employment law but prohibits self-employment and operating a business. Someone offered freelance contracts should therefore check the actual working arrangement rather than assuming that any paid activity is covered. To continue employment after graduate permission expires, the guidance requires the usual employment-permit route with the enterprise department.
The stamps summary describes an extra year in terms of a completed master’s programme, whereas the detailed programme and policy use the broader wording Level 9 or above. A holder of another eligible award at that level should use the detailed programme evidence and confirm the category with registration, rather than relying only on the short stamp summary. Stamp 1G also exists for certain spouses and partners, but those are separate categories with different renewal rules. A graduate should not borrow a spouse’s route simply because both permissions carry the same stamp number.
